Matsuyuki challenges first musical in 'Cabaret'

Actress Yasuko Matsuyuki, who starred in last year's hit movie "Hula Girl," has been cast in her first musical. She will play the lead role as Sally Bowles in the 1966 Broadway classic "Cabaret."
"Cabaret" has already had several runs in Japan. The most recent one was in 2004, starring Miki Maya and Kazukiyo Nishikiori.
The new production will be directed by Suzuki Matsuo. Sadao Abe will play the role of the Emcee, and a young actor is planned to be cast as the writer Clifford.
Performances are scheduled for October at Tokyo's Aoyama Theatre and Nagoya's Aichi Pension Hall. In November, the musical will be performed at the Osaka Pension Hall.

Tsukamoto, Inoue promote Kagome vegetable juice

AKB48 teams up with Shin-chan

Five members of popular idol group AKB48 have formed a temporary unit called "Crayon Friends from AKB48," which will appear in the upcoming film, "Crayon Shin-chan: Arashi wo Yobu Utau Ketsu dake Bakudan!" The movie hits theaters on April 21.
Yu Imai, Kazumi Urano, Mai Ohshima, Ayumi Orii, and Kayo Noro will provide voices and sing the movie's opening theme, "Yuru Yuru de DE-O!" They are also scheduled to appear in the TV series.

Satoeri brokenhearted over Ichikawa

The relationship between talento Eriko Sato and kabuki actor Ebizo Ichikawa XI has come to an end.
On February 27 and 28, Sato wrote on her blog that she had been hurt for the first time, and the posts included pictures of her crying. The source of her sadness was not mentioned at the time, but later blog posts made it more evident.
The current issue of FRIDAY magazine includes a quote from Ichikawa confirming that the two have broken up, but goes on to say that the two are still good friends.
Reports of Sato and Ichikawa's relationship began circulating last October, when they were spotted together at a monjayaki store. They publicly announced their relationship on December 6.

Ayu partners with Hello Kitty

In honor of the 10th anniversary of her debut, Ayumi Hamasaki will be selling merchandise in collaboration with Hello Kitty. The goods include two types of hand mirrors and a special ayupan (Ayumi Hamasaki figurine) holding a Hello Kitty. The merchandise goes on sale on avex's mu-mo shop at 4:00pm on Friday. They will also be available at Hamasaki's shows during her Asia Tour 2007, which begins on Saturday.
Avex says they received a collaboration offer from Sanrio at the end of last year. Hamasaki quickly agreed, as she has been a big Hello Kitty fan since she was a child.

Mr.Children wins second Best Video at MVA

The 2007 SPACE SHOWER Music Video Awards were held on Saturday at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. Mr.Children took the top prize of Best Video of the Year with their song "Shirushi." They previously won the award in 2004 with "Kurumi."
Ken Hirai and AI won Best Male Video and Best Female Video, respectively. In the Best Your Choice category, fans voted for Remioromen's "Stand By Me." The full list of winners will be posted in the forums.

Kusanagi gives surprise graduation speech

SMAP member Tsuyoshi Kusanagi made a guest appearance at the graduation exercises of the Teikyo University Group on Sunday. The event was held at the Nippon Budokan, with about 4,300 people in attendance, including the graduates and their families. To the audience's surprise, Kusanagi appeared on stage to deliver a speech. Kusanagi's appearance was arranged as a commemoration of the publication of "Okiraku," a collection of Kusanagai's essays over the past 11 years. The book, which went on sale on the 14th, has sold over 100,000 copies.

Kimutaku becomes the face of WOWOW

Takuya Kimura of idol group SMAP has been appointed as the new image character of satellite television network WOWOW. Plans include a new commercial. Details have not yet been revealed, but the campaign seems to be aiming to show both the "handsome" and "comical" sides of Kimura.

New 'Machiben' series in the works

NHK has announced a new short drama series titled "Shin Machiben." The series will air in the Saturday 9:00pm time slot, starting on June 30. It will last for six episodes.
The cast and story will be different from the first "Machiben" series, which aired last year. This time, the series revolves around three men past retirement age who decide to start their own law office. Tetsuya Watari, Koji Ishizaka, and Takeo Chii will play the lead roles. Chiriko Saka#a is also a part of the main cast, and Rie Tomosaka is given a voice role.
  
NHK's announcement also mentions some of the guests for the first episode: Hitomi Kuroki, Fumiyo Kohinata, Shingo Tsurumi, and Shigeru Koyama.

Yu Shirota to star in another Satoshi Yoshida adaptation

D-BOYS member Yu Shirota will star in the live-action film based on Satoshi Yoshida's popular manga "Arakure Knight." The original manga was serialized in Shonen Gahosha's "Young King" magazine from 1995 to 2005. By popular demand, it continued in Arakure Knight Magazine until last November. The 28 tankobons have sold a total of more than 10 million copies.
In "Arakure Knight," Shirota takes on the role of Naito Zenba, a 17-year-old in a biker gang. Shirota is perhaps best known for his role as Kunimitsu Tezuka in the "Prince of Tennis" movie. He also starred in "June Bride" last year, another movie based on a Satoshi Yoshida manga.

Misako Yasuda will co-star as Zenba's girlfriend. The film is scheduled to open at the end of April.

Sayaka Aoki stars in manual labor role

Comedian/talento Sayaka Aoki will star in a Fuji TV drama special titled "Kuu Neru Tokoro Sumu Tokoro." Based on the book of the same name by author Asuko Taira, the story follows a 30-year-old woman who gives up a career as a publishing editor and becomes a laborer for a building contractor.

Actor Ken Kaneko will co-star in the drama. It airs on April 3 at 10:00pm.

Final episode of 'Karei Naru Ichizoku' breaks 40%

The final episode of the TBS drama "Karei Naru Ichizoku" aired on Sunday night. Video Research Ltd. revealed that it averaged a 30.4% rating in the Kanto region, with a peak of 35.5%. However, in the Kansai region, it fared even better with a rating of 39.3% and a peak of 44.9%.
Meanwhile, the final episode of "Hana Yori Dango 2," which aired on Friday, came in second again. It only averaged 27.6% in the Kanto region and 26.0% in the Kansai area.

NEWS' Koyama: from university to high school!

Keiichiro Koyama of popular Johnny's group NEWS will star in his first musical this June. The production is based on the hit Disney television movie, "High School Musical." In January, Koyama attended a performance of the musical in Atlanta, Georgia, along with pop star Nami Tamaki, who will co-star with him. After seeing it, he stated that he wanted to make it popular in Japan too. The musical will open on June 12 at the Aoyama Theatre in Tokyo.

It was also reported that Koyama will be graduating from Meiji University this month.

Issei Ishida gets first lead role in 11 years

The unique theater group Gekidan Taishu Shosetsuka has announced its 13th production. The play is called "Blue Blue Birthday" and will feature actor Issei Ishida in his first lead stage role in about 11 years. Co-starring with him is Hello! Project leader Yuko Nakazawa. Takashi Sumita and Kengo Okuchi also appear in the play.

Writer Yutaka Hirooka and director Yoshiyuki Yano have teamed up to create this somewhat dark comedy about a family that is taken hostage. 14 performances are scheduled from June 22 to July 2 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space.

Shibasaki teams up with Group Tamashii

Actress/singer Kou Shibasaki and rock band Group Tamashii have announced that they are forming a new unit called "Group Tamashii ni Kou Shibasaki ga." Their debut single, "Omae Low Tension Girl," is the theme song for the upcoming movie, "Maiko Haaaan!!!"
Shibasaki and two of Group Tamashii's members, actor Sadao Abe and screenwriter Kankuro Kudo, are involved in the movie. Abe stars as Kimihiko Onizuka, a salaryman with a penchant for maikos (apprentice geishas), while Shibasaki plays the role of Onizuka's ex-girlfriend and co-worker. Kudo is in charge of the screenplay.
The movie will be released on June 16. The single will go on sale on June 13, but it will start playing in movie trailers this month.

Kanjiya lands next Asadora lead

On Wednesday, NHK announced that actress Shihori Kanjiya will play the role of the heroine in "Chiritotechin." The series, which is NHK's 77th Asadora, begins on October 1. Kanjiya's character is a young woman aiming to make it big in the world of rakugo.
