Beckham bids farewell to Man United fans and Old Trafford
By ROB HARRIS, Associated Press Writer
March 13, 2007
MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Manchester United turned David Beckham into an international star, and on Tuesday he bid an emotional farewell to Old Trafford before he leaves European soccer for the United States.
Beckham joined United in 1989 at 14, debuted in 1992, and transferred in 2003 to Real Madrid. He will join Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy after his contract with the Spanish club expires June 30.
"The time I spent at this club was the best time in my whole football career," Beckham told the 74,000-sellout crowd at halftime of a charity match.
Injury forced him to withdraw from a star-filled European side that faced United to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the European Union and the Red Devils' half century of play in continental soccer. Man United won 4-3, getting two goals from Wayne Rooney and one each from Wes Brown and Cristiano Ronaldo. El-Hadji Diouf scored twice for Europe and Florent Malouda had a goal.
Since he moved to Spain, the 31-year-old Beckham had returned to the stadium in northwest England as the captain of England's national team but hadn't been able to personally thank United for 14 years that brought the club many trophies.
"I've waited four years to actually come back and to actually say thank you to the fans and the people of the club," he said.
Beckham won six English Premier League titles and the European Champions League during his United career.
He told fans he was grateful for the strong support shown in his toughest time -- after he was ejected during England's World Cup match against Argentina in 1998.
"I think I wouldn't have got through many things without the people in this stadium," he said.
On the field, he publicly supported United manager Alex Ferguson, who struck Beckham's eye with a football boot on the eve of his departure.
"Everybody knows here that you've got the best manager in the world at this club," he told the crowd to rapturous applause.
United leads the Premier League by nine points and remains in contention for the Champions League and The Football Association Cup.
"I think this team is going to be incredible, and I think they're going to go on and win many things, not just this year but throughout many years to come," he said. "So good luck and thank you." |

YOUTUBE nak kena sue......
Brian Deagon
Tue Mar 13, 7:00 PM ET
Viacom on Tuesday dropped a coconut on YouTube, the 800-pound gorilla in Web video sharing, with a $1 billion lawsuit charging "brazen disregard" of intellectual property laws and "massive intentional copyright infringement."
The suit comes a few weeks after Viacom (NYSE:VIA - News) first told YouTube owner Google (NasdaqGS:GOOG - News) to remove 100,000 videos of Viacom's copyrighted content. Google bought YouTube in November for $1.65 billion.
Viacom says it has identified 150,000 unauthorized clips of its copyrighted programs that have been viewed what the lawsuit calls "an astounding 1.5 billion times." That's just a fraction of the violations, because YouTube hides content from being easily discovered, Viacom alleged.
Lawyers and analysts contacted for this story, however, generally sided with Google in what is the first major lawsuit between a big media company and a big online video site.
Viacom's units include Paramount Pictures, MTV and Comedy Central, which also are named as plaintiffs in the suit.
Even after YouTube is told to remove content, "in many instances the very same infringing video remains on YouTube because it was uploaded by at least one other user, or appears on YouTube again within hours of its removal," the suit says.
Google, in a statement provided via e-mail, replied: "We are confident that YouTube has respected the legal rights of copyright holders and believe the courts will agree."
Viacom seeks a declaration that YouTube willfully infringes on its copyrights. It also seeks a permanent injunction forcing YouTube to "employ reasonable methodologies to prevent or limit infringement." The lawsuit seeks statutory damages of at least $1 billion.
To win the suit, Viacom might need a rewrite of the landmark Digital Millennium Copyright Act that YouTube and other video sites use for cover, observers say.
Passed in 1998, the DMCA extended copyright protection laws while also giving some protection to online sites such as YouTube.
As long as online properties remove copyrighted content when demanded by copyright holders, the sites can't be held liable for infringement.
"The law provides Google a way out of liability," said Barry Cohen, an intellectual property lawyer with Pittsburgh-based Thorp Reed & Armstrong. "Google's argument is 'We comply. When we get a notice, we take the content down and we're not accountable for infringement.'"
In its statement, Google said it will press ahead with online video:
"YouTube is great for users and offers real opportunities to rights holders: the opportunity to interact with users; to promote their content to a young and growing audience; and to tap into the online advertising market.
"We will certainly not let this suit become a distraction to the continuing growth and strong performance of YouTube and its ability to attract more users, more traffic and build a stronger community."
Others also say Viacom faces an uphill battle because of the protections provided by the DMCA.
"There are a number of weaknesses in the plaintiff's case," said David Michail, who heads a Los Angeles law firm that focuses on intellectual property, the Internet and media.
"They (Viacom) offer a premise that You Tube is somehow required under the DMCA to affirmatively screen and remove infringing content," Michail said. "This is not supported by the statute or case law. They will probably lose on this argument."
Michail says Viacom has some arrows it can fire. But he says Viacom must prove that YouTube actively is encouraging infringement and that it's intentionally slow in removing content.
Viacom and Google have tried, but failed, to reach a pact for distributing Viacom content. Viacom is trying to develop a larger audience for its content on its own Web sites and on other Web sites. Last month, it announced plans to provide content to Joost, an Internet TV system in development.
"Viacom is proving they're not just a bunch of old media guys that don't get it," said James McQuivey, an analyst at Jupiter Research. "They want to take advantage of this new medium rather than trying to stop it."
The lawsuit also could distract Viacom's online video efforts, says Staci Kramer, editor of PaidContent.org, a Web site that covers Internet issues.
"Viacom runs the risks of having its own efforts overshadowed with its battle with Google and YouTube," she said. "Viacom is making some progress on its own, and the issue here is that could get lost."

PENDERMA MENANG CABUTAN BERTUAH
Baucar $500 diraih kerana niat ikhlas hendak derma
Oleh
Soraya Salim
'Panggilannya tiba hanya lima minit selepas saya membuat derma $30 melalui telefon.

LELAKI CUBA BUNUH DUA ANAK MUNGKIN DIBEBAS TAHUN DEPAN
Tetapi anak bongsu mereka mengalami sawan.
- Bernama. |

DITIKAM TIGA KALI TAPI MASIH KEJAR PENYERANG Oleh
Khalid Khamis

BOAT OVERTURNS OFF BATAM | WHO WILL SURVIVE IF BOAT...SINKS? | Did she pick boat with GPS? Did they take along their own life vests? Did he check the weather? |
DON'T assume that boat operators will do everything necessary for safety.
Here's what you can do:
Get your own life jacket. Make sure the boat is properly equipped and not overloaded.
Check out weather conditions.
If you are aware of the possible dangers and alert during the trip, you have a higher chance of remaining safe.
Graphic designer Michael Lachica, 34, who goes on regular fishing trips, said: 'Based on my observations, usually everyone takes it for granted that the boat owner has all the safety equipment.'
Even for something as basic as a life vest, few people ask if there are enough to go around.
Mr Lachica said: 'Whenever I go on an overseas fishing trip, I take my own life vest.
'Some people may laugh, but when you're out at sea, it doesn't make a difference whether your're a strong swimmer or not because currents can be strong.
'It's about how long you can stay afloat.'
Said Mr Edward Yow, general manager of Changi Sailing Club, which conducts courses for those seeking a powered pleasure-craft driving licence: 'All boats must have life vests, and there must be enough for the number of people it is licensed to carry.'
But he added: 'It is advisable to bring your own, then you know for sure it fits you and you're comfortable with it.'
Mr Justin Chan, 30, another fishing enthusiast who takes a boat out several times a month, said: 'I would not get on a boat if the captain does not have proper life jackets.
'Life vests that are torn and tattered show that it is poorly maintained and that's not acceptable for me.'
When travelling by boat, it would be wise to also note how big the boat is and to see if it may be overloaded.
Mr Yow estimated that a small 6m-long ferry boat, like those used to ferry people from Changi to Pulau Ubin, can usually take up to 12 passengers.
Also, it is always prudent to check weather and sea conditions before you get on a boat.
Mr Lachica said: 'You should always check out what the weather is like so that you know it won't be too choppy.
'There are websites you can visit to check for wave height, so it gives you an idea if it's going to be choppy or not.'
He added: 'While it's no guarantee, at least it gives you an idea of what conditions are like.'
Mr Chan, a lawyer, also suggests taking boats that have proper navigation tools.
He said: 'It's best to find a boat with a GPS (Global Positioning System). Most have them now.
'While at sea, there should always be someone keeping watch for other vessels. If the captain isn't doing it himself, then he should make sure someone else is.'
Even basic safety measures can count in an emergency.
As Mr Lachica said: 'You want to go out and come back... It's about personally ensuring you have what it takes to survive.'
Fortunately for the passengers on the boat to Pulau Segayang, all survived despite not having any life vests.
OTHER ACCIDENTS
Last October, a freak boating accident in Perth, Australia, left two Singaporeans dead.
Four Singaporean men who were based there for work were on their way back after fishing when a 4m-high wave struck their boat about 1.5km from shore.
Although the boat had life vests on board, two of the friends did not survive.
A passing boat managed to save two of them. The bodies of the other two were found later.
The area where the accident took place was not known for big waves. But the weatherman had forecast big waves on the day of the incident off Mindarie Keys in Perth.
In March last year, another sea accident killed 58 people, including four Singaporeans, off the coast of Bahrain.
Two other Singaporeans were saved from the water.
The leisure boat packed with tourists on a dinner cruise was overloaded and capsized.
About 137 people were on board the boat, which was licensed to carry only 100.
The Bahrain authorities later found there were 19 safety deficiencies on the boat and a British coroner's inquest found that instability, poor safety equipment and an unqualified crew contributed to the boat capsizing. |

14 people plunge into sea as wave hits boat. Shaken S'porean victim: | WE WERE CRYING & PRAYING |
HER fellow passenger was flailing in the choppy sea. To save the panic-stricken non-swimmer, Madam Lee let fly with a punch.
It worked. It shook the struggling woman long enough to stop her from sinking.
It is a wonder that Madam Lee could herself be calm enough to act because she, too, had the shock of her life when the boat she was in suddenly capsized.
Madam Lee and 13 others, including her husband, were in the boat when it was hit by a high wave off Batam at about 4pm on 9 Feb.
When the boat tipped over, she recalled, her only thought was to stay alive and gulp down some air.
She yelled out to her husband to see if he was all right. She thought: 'How are we going to get out of this alive?'
It was supposed to be a weekend fishing getaway for the couple. They were among 12 passengers and two crew - 7 Singaporeans, 5 Indonesians and 2 Malaysians - travelling to Coral Cove Resort on Pulau Segayang, about an hour from Batam.
She did not want to reveal her full name because her family does not know about the accident.
Madam Lee, 23, an interior designer, and her 31-year-old husband, both fishing enthusiasts, were told they could expect good fishing around the island.
The boat was ferrying the group to the resort. CHOPPY WATERS
The 10-metre long boat, which is typical of the wooden fishing vessels and ferries common in Malaysia and Indonesia waters, hit choppy waters. It was tossed around.
Madam Lee and her husband, who go on fishing trips regularly, did not find the rough waters unusual.
She said: 'It was still the monsoon period so the water was a bit choppy, though I wouldn't say dangerously so.
'The waves were about 1 to 1 1/2m high.'
Suddenly, around 4pm, a big wave hit. The boat flipped over.
All hell broke loose and the passengers were thrown overboard.
Madam Lee said: 'Everybody started shouting and crying and praying.'
'The first thing I did was shout out for my husband... He was on the other side of the (overturned) boat.'
Fortunately both know how to swim.
There were no life vests on board and some of the passengers, including a Singaporean woman, couldn't swim.
'The woman was struggling in the water. I tried to push her up above the water surface.
'She was panicking because she couldn't swim... I had to punch her on her head to calm her down so that I could push her up. I had no choice.'
Madam Lee managed to help the woman grab onto an ice box to stay afloat.
Though the boat had overturned, it remained afloat. This allowed the passengers to cling to its sides.
Madam Lee said one of the boatmen tried to right the capsized boat but was unsuccessful.
Others clung to the iceboxes that were brought along to keep their catch.
Among those in the boat was the chief editor of a Malaysian fishing magazine, Mr Po Chuan Maye, 41.
Madam Lee said he threw away all his expensive fishing gear that was inside the ice box so that people could cling to it and stay afloat.
Mr Poh told The New Paper on Sunday: 'The first thing that crossed my mind was whether anyone would come and save us.
'Then I looked around to see if everyone was okay. There was a lot of shouting and screaming at first.
'Luckily the boat didn't sink, so we just clung to the boat and drifted.'
DRIFTING AWAY
Then they had to deal with another danger - the currents started to wash some of the survivors away.
Madam Lee said: 'One man and his wife were clinging on to an icebox, but then they started drifting further and further away because of the currents.
'Someone swam out to help bring them back to the boat.'
Clinging to various parts of the overturned boat, many of the passengers, who had not known each other before the trip, shouted words of encouragement and kept a lookout for passing boats.
They drifted about at sea for about 45 minutes.
But Madam Lee decided she wasn't prepared to just drift and wait.
She and her husband decided to swim to shore to get help. The nearest island seemed to be about 1 1/2km away.
They clung to an ice box, each holding to one side of it, and swam.
Madam Lee said: 'We just kept on swimming toward shore. I was swimming and blowing a whistle which one of the other passengers had with him.
'We swam until we couldn't see the others anymore... We were getting cramps in our legs. I didn't know if we could make it but I kept thinking there are 12 other lives out there that need to be saved.'
Finally, a local fisherman spotted the couple. He had heard the whistle and went to find them.
Meanwhile, a woodcutter on a nearby island had heard the group's cries for help and seen the capsized boat from a hill.
It took him 30 minutes to run to the nearest village and sound the alert.
By the time Madam Lee and her husband got the local fisherman to rescue the other passengers, other boats had also arrived to help.
Fortunately, all the passengers on board survived without any major injuries.
Mr Po, a Malaysian, said: 'When we were out there, I felt someone would come and save us.
'But, at times, it also felt like I was facing death. I've had other close shaves in boat and car accidents before and survived. But it crossed my mind that, maybe, this time, my luck had just run out and maybe I was going to die this time.'
Echoing his sentiments, Madam Lee said: 'When you're thrown over like that and your feet can't touch ground, you start to panic.'
But she is a strong swimmer, and it was only when she reached the shore that the reality of the accident hit her.
'When we reached the resort, when I touched ground, I started crying non-stop. It was only then that I thought I could have just died out there,' she said.
Now safely back in Singapore, Madam Lee believes that the boat was overloaded.
Before they set sail, she recalled, the boat was 'lopsided' because, apart from the passengers, there were also carrying sacks of rice and packets of cement.
'The boat was already not balanced, and the waves were crashing on to the right side of the boat. When the boat went up on a wave, there were people (on board) who went 'ahh'.'
On hindsight, Mr Po felt that a bigger boat should have been called to ferry them.
He said: 'On that day, on top of the 14 people, there was still our luggage and the other things they put inside boat, like rice and other supplies.
'As the boat left the jetty, I started to get worried because the boat had tilted to one side several times during the boat journey, so I tried to go to the lighter side and use my body weight to balance it out.'
Mr Po said the boat driver appeared to be inexperienced.
There was one other boatman on board. Mr Po claimed that the boatman had shouted at the driver to be careful because he wasn't cutting the wave, but going alongside.
'Just as he finished shouting at the driver, the boat capsized.'
He added: 'From my experience, this kind of (1m to 1 1/2m) waves are not dangerous. Normally the boat will stabilise quickly. It wouldn't shake about like that.'
While some passengers managed to recover some of their belongings, Madam Lee and her husband lost all their luggage and equipment.
Besides their personal documents like passport, and fishing rods that cost over $1,000 each, the couple also lost digital cameras and jewellery.
But the incident is not going to stop Madam Lee, her husband and Mr Po from going on other fishing trips.
Madam Lee said: 'We just won't be going with the same organiser... and I'm going to buy my own life vest which I'll take with me on all my trips.' |

Owner In Shock As Car Splashed With Paint Remover
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri Begawan - Vandalism took a much more sinister design that is rarely seen, when paint remover was thrown at a car owned by a lady living in Kg Bendahara Lama, Kg Ayer.
The incident happened around 10pm Tuesday. Accompanied by her family members, the owner of the car rushed to the riverside and found her six-month-old redcoloured car damaged on three sides.
"I was told by a neighbour that my car has been vandalised at about 10pm. I cried on seeing the paint of my new car literally stripped off," she said.
She believes that it was not an isolated incident as her car was targeted amid a row of cars parked by the riverside. "I believe it is the work of someone who wanted to target me as this is the third incident. They threw mud on my car on two other occasions," she said.
The woman, who works for the Ministry of Defence, made a police report the same night.
According to a workshop operator, the car needed a new coat of paint, which may cost the owner about $500 to $600.
The woman said she was claiming for compensation from her insurance agency.

PINTAR!
'Apabila ditanya, Ainan kata dia faham.

- AFP.

RENUNG HUKUM SEBELUM DIRIKAN DAPUR-DAPUR
IKLAN mendirikan dapur-dapur pusara berharga ratusan dolar menarik perhatian saya.

Malaysian minister denies bullet train link to Singapore approved
KUALA LUMPUR: Transport minister Chan Kong Choy has denied a report that Malaysia and Singapore have approved construction of a bullet train rail linking the two countries, saying the plan is still being mulled.
"The government has still not made a final decision, it is still looking at the proposal," Chan was quoted as saying late Tuesday by the state Bernama news agency.
The minister also said the government did not have a timetable to make a decision, and that it wanted to thoroughly evaluate the proposal.
A report on Monday by the New Straits Times said the two nations had approved the high-speed train service proposed last year by Malaysian conglomerate YTL Corporation.
Citing an unnamed YTL official, the report said YTL would build the rail link by the end of 2009, and that design plans and studies were underway.
The official also said YTL planned to draw on the expertise of Germany's Siemens AG in its construction.
An existing rail service from capital Kuala Lumpur to Singapore takes about seven hours, while the high-speed train would make the journey in 90 minutes. - AFP/yy |
