Fire Hits Seria Government Barracks Again
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri Begawan - In a bizarre coincidence, barely two months after a large fire destroyed government barracks in Lorong Tiga Selatan Seria, another government barracks located next to those barracks suffered the same fate yesterday afternoon.
Residents and their children cried in each other's arms as they watched the barracks they called home being engulfed in flames at about 3pm yesterday.
The 16-unit barracks were fully occupied and only a few families managed to save some of their belongings such as television sets, furniture, clothes and important documents. Most of the victims said they were at work when the fire broke out.
A 13-year-old boy who lived in the barracks said he was downstairs and heading off to play football when he spotted smoke and flames billowing from a middle unit on the upper floor.
Neighbours pounded on each other's doors to ensure that no one was left behind. Several residents from the other barracks gave great assistance by evacuating women and children.
Flames were seen burning through the roof and completely wiped out eight units of the barracks on the upper floor. Meanwhile, the lower floor suffered water damage.
The blaze was brought under control by a Belait Fire and Rescue team within 15 minutes. Also at the scene were Belait District Officer, Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Abdul Rahman; Commanding Officer of Belait District Operation B' Fire and Rescue branch, Awang Abdul Aziz bin Hj Mohammad, and Mukim Seria Chief and Head village.
The fire victims were transported yesterday with the assistance of Belait District Office to the Seria community hall which was turned into 'a relief centre. Police are probing the incident and the cause of the fire is under investigation.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Blind Faith Slammed
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri Begawan - It's not only Bomohs that are not tolerated but also the incredible.
Religious authorities made this observation after the worship of a strange deer skin came to light. It was said that the deer skin with 'Quranic inscriptions' could roll itself up and there was also the talk of an invincible suit.
Such nonsensical claims have no place in Islam- where nothing magical or incredible besides the power of the Almighty is taken as the truth, they said.
Muslims were advised not to fall prey to activities or beliefs that were so unbelievable that they plainly went against the teachings of Islam, the spokesperson at the Aqidah H Control Section of the Syariah Affairs Department told the Weekend.
The call was made amid the recent discovery of various sorts of deviant activities notably an invincible suit, deer skin with `Quranic inscriptions' that was believed to roll itself up and the amazing Bomoh trick called `menarik duit' or making money out of leaves. The officer highlighted the criteria of 'Kurafat' or deviant activities. None of this was based on 'Nas-Nas Syarak' of Quran and Hadith, they were just plainly fictitious, mythical and sheer nonsense, the officer said.
They are a form of worshipping spirits aimed at deviating a person from Islamic beliefs. They use objects like graveyards and trees and so on that contain negative elements that are against the Islamic belief and teachings.
'Kurafat' can be in various forms such as believing in one having supernatural powers such as graveyard, trees, wood, hills, sticks and so on. The belief of taking a shower to get rid of misfortunes, believing in genies and seeking help from them as well as the strange worship of the village and the seas has no place in Islam.
Others include believing in gaining wealth such as worshipping paddy, believing in certain taboos, believing in magical knowledge of the future through horoscopes, digits and charts, worship of souls of late ancestors etc.
Last month, the Borneo Bulletin highlighted the confiscation of Quranic inscriptions on a deer skin that is claimed to roll itself up when placed on the hand was valued at B$2,000. It was just one of the many items that were confiscated in a raid by the Aqidah Control Section.
The Aqidah Control Section warned the public, especially Muslims, not to be swayed by devious beliefs, acts or activities that are against the teachings of Islam, including buying and selling of superstitious items. The other items the Agidah Control Section personnel stumbled upon were four other pieces of deer skin with Quranic inscriptions, rubies, gold coloured nails and a number of bottles containing small amulets.
Among other offences the perpetrator was suspected to have committed include fortune-telling using birth dates, selling amulets and other items to protect oneself from black magic, for charms and also spells to make demands, making letters of agreement using blood, an invincible suit, using the name of VIPs and sacrilegious acts such as pawning money to the Almighty. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

RBA Goes Paperless With E-Ticketing
By Azaraimy HH
Bandar Seri Begawan - Royal Brunei Airlines and Abacus Distribution Systems Brunei on Friday announced the launch of electronic ticketing (e-Ticketing).
Abacus-connected travel agents in Brunei will now issuing eTickets on Royal Brunei Airlines flights from June 1, 2007.
Royal Brunei Airlines Vice President for Reservations and Distribution John News said, "The implmentation of eTicketing for travel agents in Brunei is a crucial component towards increasing our eTicketing penetration.
"We are pleased to engage Abacus to provide e-ticketing capability to the Brunei travel agents. This cutover represents another milestone and progress towards achieving International Air Transport Association's target of 100% eTicketing worldwide by end 2007.
"Abacus is pleased to provide solution for Royal Brunei Airlines to enable the travel agents to issue eTickets," said Abd Halim Haji Abd Rahman, Sales & Marketing Manager of Abacus Brunei.
"Brunei is a unique market as a Billing and Settlement Plan does not exist, thus the solutions for the other BSP markets cannot be implemented here. Abacus is providing a generic electronic transitional automated ticketing (eTAT) for the implementation of eTicketing in Brunei," he said.
Brunei's travel agents are also enthusiastic about the prospect of going paperless. Ms Young Siut Leng, the manager of Continental Tours & Travel, said "eTickets are not only more secure and convenient for customers, it also offers substantial cost benefits in terms of delivery and time management."
As eTicket holds the information previously held on a paper ticket, eTicketing is a real-time paperless method for airlines and travel agents to issue tickets.
Individual ticket information is stored within the airline's reservation system and can be retrieved and processed electronically, reducing the amount of paper ticket inventory and hassle in re-issuance of misplaced printed tickets.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Brunei Postal Service Quality In Global Top 20
By Finaz Daniel
Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei's Postal Services Department is ranked 17th globally in terms of performance parameters by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the United Nations body that coordinates postal policies worldwide.
During the closing of the Postal Service Department Service Quality Management course yesterday afternoon, Thakur Subhash Sinha, a consultant from the Asia Pacific Postal College in Bangkok, Thailand, said that according to the UPU, Brunei's Postal Services Department rates above 95 per cent in terms of express mail delivery services. "Each item that comes from express mail service (EMS) in Brunei gets tracked and traced, he said. "Brunei has a well in placed system when it comes to EMS."
Based in Berne, Switzerland, the UPU heads cooperations between postal sector players and helps to ensure a universal network of up-to-date products and services. Speaking to The Brunei Times, Postmaster General Hj Abdul Kadir Tengah, said that the course has helped the department identify a few areas that need improvement.
Among these are manpower, transportation of mail delivery and mail processing efficiency. In terms of manpower, Hj Abdul Kadir said the department needs to distribute the use of manpower evenly. "We need to restructure and realign job allocations."
In the case of transportation of mail delivery, problems were traced to motorcycle shortage. With this in mind, the department is offering to supply the private sector with motorcycles. The department will also be maximising the responsibilities of postmen in the delivery of express mail services.
In order to improve the efficiency of mail delivery, the department will implement the International Postal System Track and Trace project set tentatively next month. The system will allow customers to track registered items via the Internet.
The Postmaster General further said the department has submitted a proposal to the Quality Service Fund, an allocation programme provided by the UPU which aims to finance projects designed to improve service quality.
Meanwhile, in an interview with The Brunei Times, Sinha downplayed claims emails are causing post offices to become obsolete. "It is unfounded," he said, adding, "With the growing number of businesses, direct mail and business mail have also increased." He said postal services departments have to move with the times to keep up with today's technology.
Sinha will visit post offices in Kuala Belait, Seria and Lumut today before leaving to attend an International Postal Service course in Bangkok on Monday.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
