Euro 2008 - Germany spank hapless Swiss Eurosport - Wed, 26 Mar 23:16:00 2008
Germany got their Euro 2008 preparations back on track with an emphatic 4-0 friendly win over tournament co-hosts Switzerland.
Two goals from Mario Gomez in between strikes from Bayern Munich duo Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolskisecured a comfortable win for Joachim Loew's side who have now gone 51years and 18 matches without losing to their southern neighbours.
Klose put Germany ahead in the 23rd minute when a Gomez pass squirmed beneath Swiss keeper Diego Benaglio, allowing the Polish-born striker to tap in his 38th international goal.
WerderBremen forward Gomez made sure of victory with two clinical second-halfstrikes in the space of six minutes, before substitute Podolskicompounded Switerland's misery after beating the offside trap in the89th minute.
"By and large I'm satisfied," said Loew, whoseside came in for criticism last month after a 3-0 win over Austriawhich was far less convincing than the scoreline suggested.
"Weplayed well from the start and were well-organised. It was clear thatwe wanted to play more aggressively and more intensively than we didagainst Austria.
"Every time Lukas [Podolski]has come on he's done well and Gomez showed how dangerous he is in thesecond half. I'm glad we've got so many options for Euro 2008."
Switzerlandcoach Koebi Kuhn had less cause for optimism but promised his teamwould bounce back in time for the June tournament which they areco-hosting with neighbouring Austria.
"We played against a German team that was dominant in all areas," Kuhn acknowledged. "But we also helped them out.
"It'sobviously painful but I can only congratulate Germany and we will justhave to rehabilitate ourselves at the tournament itself."

| MUNICH, Germany (AFP) -Bayern Munich's superstars Franck Ribery and Luca Toni can expect tosleep on the job next season as new coach Jurgen Klinsmann introducesradical changes - including beds in the team room.
Klinsmann is set to replace Ottmar Hitzfeld as Bayern coach onJuly 1 and has already given instructions for a number of bold changesincluding an eight-hour working day for the players and a luxury teamroom with beds.
"It's a new culture for the Bundesliga," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told German magazine Stern.
"The players will be able to get some rest between training.
"Jurgen simply wants to make everything professional.
"He wants to give his players the chance to rest.
"Also some professionals live nearby and have the chance to go home for lunch, but that is an unnecessary trip.
"An eight-hour day has been typical in Italian football for a long time.
"We will have them here from breakfast through to afternoon coffee.
"And there will be the possibility to sleep now."
But Bayern fans face a shut out as the Saebener Road trainingground - which has up to 5,000 fans watching during the summer - willhave its end closed off to deny their legions of fans a chance to watchtheir heros play.
And the restuarant, which has views of the training pitch, will be closed down to make way for the luxury team room.
"We are going to carry out a few calculated changes," said Rummenigge.
"The stadium is for the fans, the training place for the team."
But to compensate for the late of regular access, fans may wellget the chance to see occasional public training sessions at theAllianz Arena.
"We know that we can not neglect the fans, Bayern Munich is and will always be a family Club," Rummenigge said.
Meanwhile, Brazilian defender Lucio is going nowhere insists Rummenigge.
The 29-year-old had hinted he wanted a transfer to anotherbig-name European club, but Rummenigge poured cold water on the idea.
"He is a very good player and we are not going to let him go," said Rummenigge.
"The fact is he has a contract until 2010 and we won't let him go." |

Bundesliga Preview: FC N黵nberg - Bayern MunichWhat: Bundesliga Round 26
Who: FC N黵nberg (17th, 19 points) v Bayern Munich (1st, 53 points)
When: Saturday 29th March 2008, 15:30 (CET)
Where: easycredit-Stadion, N黵nberg
It抯 nearly 14 months to the day that Ottmar Hitzfeld returned as Bayern trainer in a blaze of publicity and great expectation. The day after assuming control he was on the bench at the easycredit Stadion to face Bavarian rivals N黵nberg, who were flying high in sixth.
Bayern were awful that afternoon and went down to a 3-0 defeat with Hitzfeld wondering what he had let himself in for. On Saturday the two sides meet again with the both sides enjoying completely opposite fortunes this season.
Time Is Running Out
With Bayern抯 sights very much on the title, N黵nberg fans are simply targeting Bundesliga survival this season. Last season抯 sixth place finish and Cup win seems a very distant memory and 慸er Klub |
