Hamilton: Title rivals have more to lose
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton has warned his title rivals that he hasn’t completely given up on winning the 2010 F1 Drivers’ title, even if he will go to the season finale in Abu Dhabi this coming weekend, needing by his own admission, a 'miracle'.
Hamilton heads to the Yas Marina Circuit, 24 points adrift and as he such has to win this Sunday and take the maximum 25-point haul if he is to stand any chance of emulating what he did in 2008.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Englishman said he won’t be ‘looking out’ for any of his title protagonists.
"At the end of the day I've still a shot at it, so I will try to win,” he told British newspaper, The Sun. “I don't really give a damn about any of my three title rivals. They've lots more to lose than I have. So I won't be looking out for them, letting them past or anything like that.
"I'm going to Abu Dhabi to try to win, even though we don't have the fastest car at the moment, so it's going to be very difficult.
“But I could be riding in fourth and all three of them might not finish. Anything could happen this weekend."
Asked who he would like to see win the title if he can’t pull off his ‘miracle’, Hamilton said his preference would be Webber.
"I'd like to see Mark win it. He has done a great job this year,” Hamilton continued. "He has been told by his team what position he is, and against adversity he has kept at it. I think he has done an awesome job. I'm quite impressed with what he has done.
"Vettel has obviously been incredibly quick [too] and Fernando has done a good, solid job towards the end of the year. So it could go to any of them.
“But Mark's done pretty much everything right this year — apart from our little tangle [in Singapore]."
But does he have any regrets now about those accidents in Singapore and Monza?
"Maybe at the end of the year I'll reflect but it doesn't matter because although you can dwell on the past, what good does it do? None at all,” Hamilton added philosophically.
"At the end of the day if we had a faster car and we were at the front, like the Red Bulls have been all year, it's much easier to stay out of trouble, cruise to the finish line and score points.
"When you are having to make up ground and try to pass cars that are faster than you, that's when you are sometimes prone to getting taken out of the race," Hamilton summed-up. |

McLaren earns Carbon Trust certification
McLaren has become the first Formula 1 team to pick up official climate change recognition from the Carbon Trust, with sister company McLaren Automotive having agreed a new three-year ‘period of rigorous assessment’ and its latest sports car targeting lowest-in-class carbon emissions.
The new deal includes details such as the air conditioning in the Woking McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) only functioning when staff occupy certain areas, with the general initiative aiming to produce a total saving of 1,365 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year while contributing to an improvement in carbon efficiency of 8.6 percent.
Other new ideas include energy efficient lighting across the entire MTC premises, low-energy lamps for car parks and access roads and the rationalisation of compressed air supply throughout the factory.
“We’re delighted to have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard,” commented Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh. “As an environmentally conscious company, we first commissioned an independent study of our carbon emissions as long ago as 2007, so we’ve spent three years working towards this certification.
“It’s not only satisfying to become one of the first 500 companies in the UK to achieve the Standard, but it’s also particularly pleasing to be the first-ever Formula 1 team to do so.” |

McLaren dismisses livery change talk
McLaren has rubbished speculation that it could drop its silver livery this year and run in black. The rumour was based on the new clothing range launched by the Woking-based outfit and theories that the squad wants to distinguish itself from Mercedes GP.
"Black livery? Er, no," McLaren confirmed via its official Twitter feed, TheFifthDriver. "[It will be] the same Rocket Red and chrome finish that you've grown to love since Vodafone McLaren Mercedes was born in 2007.
"That's official, btw (by the way)." |

McLaren defends late car launch
The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team has spoken out amid concerns over the late launch date of its 2011 challenger. The MP4-26 is due to be launched on Friday 4 February, just after the first official pre-season test in Valencia where many of its rivals will be on-track with their new cars.
Despite the fact that McLaren will be using an interim car at the first test, the Woking squad is confident that the decision to spend more time in the wind tunnel will ultimately be the correct one. Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh believes that a later launch will pay dividends in the future.
In an interview with the official Formula 1 website, Whitmarsh said: “The MP4-26 is on schedule and will be launched on February 4, after which it will go through the normal testing processes. We feel that timetable is optimal with regard to providing Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton with the best possible package for the first race in Bahrain.”
Whitmarsh also talked about the new regulations in 2011, with moveable rear wings being introduced in an attempt to aid overtaking and the return of KERS to the sport. Much like the f-duct last year, Whitmarsh is hoping some ‘fresh design features’ will put McLaren in a good position ahead of the season-opener in Bahrain.
“There are new regulations for 2011 - and the MP4-26 will not only adhere to them but it will also sport a few fresh design features in response to the opportunities presented by those new regulations,” he commented. “So, yes, there will be some new elements, but as you can imagine I’m not prepared to add more detail at the moment!" |

Lowe becomes McLaren Technical Director
Paddy Lowe has been appointed Technical Director of McLaren following an internal reshuffle at the Woking squad. Having graduated from his previous role as Engineering Director, he will now be in charge of the team’s technical strategy whilst working closely with Tim Goss and Neil Oatley.
With Lowe promoted, Goss – Chief Engineer of this year’s MP4-25 car – will take on a larger role within the development programme by becoming Director of Engineering. Oatley, who joined McLaren 25 years ago, continues in his higher position as Director of Design and Development programmes.
“It’s great for Neil and me to be joined by Tim as another director on the technical side,” Lowe commented.
“With the three of us, we’ll not only be able to more efficiently spread our workload but, through Tim & me, we’ll also share race attendance.
“It’s very important to have senior technical management at the race track because that’s where you score the points but, equally, if you spend all your time away then you risk overlooking some of the hard work that happens back at the factory.” |

McLaren launches MP4-26 in Berlin
The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team has launched its 2011 contender in Berlin, with the Woking-based outfit presenting the new MP4-26 in front of media at the Kaisersaal media centre. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were present to reveal their new machine for the upcoming season, with the pair hoping to take the team to championship glory this year.
At midday in the German capital, McLaren mechanics wheeled the MP4-26 into the centre of the Kaisersaal venue, with fans bringing parts along to complete the bodywork of the team’s new machinery. The car features a radical sidepod inlet, sporting a unique shape unseen amongst the other 2011 cars launched thus far. Further refinements have been made to the car's design from last year, with adjustments to the airbox and nose the most prominent changes.
McLaren will run its new car for the first time at next week’s Jerez test, which takes place from February 10-13. Hamilton will be at the wheel for the opening day, before handing over to Button on day two. The remainder of the test schedule will be conducted equally, with Hamilton taking to the track again on Saturday, ahead of Button completing the team’s running at the Spanish circuit on Sunday. |
