Force India hold firm on Lotus target Smith
Reuters - Tue, 08 Jun 11:59:00 2010
Force India have told rivals Lotus that they face a long wait before technical head Mark Smith can join the Formula One newcomers.
Malaysian-owned Lotus announced last week that they had appointed Smith as technical director, reporting to overall engineering head Mike Gascoyne, once he had served out his Force India notice period.
The team added that they had also recruited chief designer Lewis Butler and aerodynamics head Marianne Hinson from Force India.
Force India owner and team principal Vijay Mallya said in a team preview for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal that Smith would be staying until after the start of next season.
"Our technical team, despite reports, is still very much intact," Mallya said.
"Mark will stay with us until April 2011 and we will, in due course, announce a structure that will take us to the next level of performance. I'm very comfortable with where we are as a team and where we are going."
Force India, who previously employed Gascoyne, and Lotus are already embroiled in a legal dispute over development of the latter's 2010 car in an Italian wind tunnel.
Mallya said the off-track disputes would not distract Force India, currently sixth of the 12 teams and 41 points behind fifth placed Renault, from their challenge to move up the Formula One grid.
"We are fully focused on the task in hand, which is to score as many points as we can and to regain that fifth position in the championship," he said.
"We're not so far away from Renault and there are plenty of opportunities left to rack points up and some circuits that we should really fly on, including Montreal.
"Any actions we're taking away from the track won't affect the team's focus on sealing our most successful season to date."

Bigger Lotus salaries led to Force India exodus E-mail
Jun.16 (GMM) The promise of more money motivated a swathe of key people to defect to Lotus.
That is the claim of Otmar Szafnauer, chief operating officer of the Force India team.
Shortly after Force India promoted Mark Smith to replace the Sauber-bound technical director James Key, Lotus announced that Smith will move to the new Malaysian-backed team next year.
Force India's Lewis Butler (chief designer) and Marianne Hinson (head of aerodynamics) are also defecting to Lotus.
"Lotus has double the salary," Szafnauer is quoted by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.
"So you either have to pay more or look for an alternative."
Third in line after Key and Smith for Force India's top technical job is reportedly Andy Green.

Chapman wants success over landmark
Clive Chapman would gladly pass on Lotus Racing's 500th grands prix celebrations to see the reincarnation of his late father's team out-qualify an established marque this weekend.
The European Grand Prix in Valencia represents an historic occasion for the Chapman family and Lotus, a team enjoying its second coming even if in Malaysian hands these days.
Founded by the late Colin Chapman, Lotus previously competed in 491 Formula One races between 1958 and 1994, claiming 107 poles, 79 victories, seven Constructors' and six Drivers' titles en route.
The iconic name was revived for this season, and although now under foreign ownership courtesy of AirAsia entrepreneur Tony Fernandes, the Chapman family are proud to be associated with the team.
Fernandes has remained loyal to many of Lotus' traditions as their cars are built in Hingham, Norfolk, and carry the revered green and gold livery.
For this weekend's event the cars driven by Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli will sport specially created '500' logos on the engine covers, whilst the team's garage will also show off the emblem that celebrates their heritage.
"The 500th grand prix for the Lotus marque is a significant landmark," said Chapman.
"It was nice Lotus Racing thought to invite my mother (Hazel) to attend.
"After all, she is the person with the closest association to the Team Lotus history.
"Much as she wanted to accept, regretfully she decided against it, so I'll be there with my family representing Classic Team Lotus and my father's legacy.
"Despite the celebrations, I am sure the most important thing about the weekend for the team is that it is the next opportunity to continue to make progress towards the established teams.
"It was exciting to watch qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix (11 days ago) when Heikki almost pipped a Sauber.
"I for one would swap the 500th landmark for that of out-qualifying an established team in normal circumstances. Fingers crossed."
The anniversary is naturally a poignant one for Fernandes, who appreciated the history he was taking on when he stepped into the Lotus role.
Although his Lotus has yet to score a point on their return to F1, he can see the progress being made and is hoping this is merely the start of a new journey that will only add to the legacy first generated by Colin Chapman.
"Celebrating the 500th race will be an absolute honour, and will obviously be very special, but we're only nine races of the whole Lotus story," said Fernandes.
"Really, this weekend is all about celebrating Colin Chapman's history, and thanking Clive, his mother Hazel, and all the people that have helped shape the Lotus legend.
"I'm thrilled some of the people that were part of the original story are with us today.
"I'm also proud we've been able to take the total number of races Lotus has taken part in to 500 and beyond.
"Hopefully we'll be celebrating 1,000 races one day, and can look back on a legacy that pays true homage to that we're celebrating this weekend - the legacy of Colin Chapman, his family, his cars and his team." |

Can Lotus live up to heritage?
Thu Jun 24 02:17PM
![](http://l.yimg.com/i/util/anysize/376,http%3A%2F%2Fa323.yahoofs.com%2Fymg%2Fwill_gray%2Fwill_gray-512933533-1277385440.jpg%3Fymh7OWDDwYd90qxh?v=2)
The Lotus marque will celebrate its 500th race in Valencia - but does the team have what it takes to re-grow the legend and how long will it take?
Lotus founder Colin Chapman's son Clive will be cheering from the pitwall this weekend as the famous name reaches the magic 500 but while there is potential to build back towards former glories it still has a very a long way to go.
With Lotus currently on 499, only three teams have had more races - Ferrari (801), McLaren (673) and Williams (542) and the Lotus name is fourth on the list of winners having clocked up 79 victories. In terms of world titles, Lotus has seven compared to McLaren's eight, Williams' nine and Ferrari's 16 while, amazingly, the next in line are the now extinct Cooper and Brabham teams and Renault, with two each.
Along with the highs, Lotus suffered some low periods during its first era, however, and when the original Team Lotus outfit dropped off the grid at the end of 1994 it had scored no points, with 16 years gone since its last title. It is now 23 years ago, almost to the day, since Aryton Senna gave the team its last victory.
So now it's back, what state is it in and can it move forward?
As a low-budget newcomer with new Malaysian money, there appears to be at least solid financial backing and the team has quickly developed a good functional base in Norfolk. The technical staff, led by Mike Gascoigne, is growing fast and has been strengthened by the addition of several key people from other teams, including Mark Smith, who will join from Force India next year.
The aim, however, when it launched with Malaysian governmental support last year, was to use Norfolk only as a temporary base and develop a technical centre in its new back yard, the Sepang circuit near Kuala Lumpur, as soon as this year. The Malaysian Prime Minister claimed that the car would soon "all be made in Malaysia, and made by Malaysians."
But at the car's launch it was announced the team's move has been put ‘on hold' for re-consideration next year - and that's when Lotus will have some really tough questions to answer.
The team's official name, 1Malaysia F1, makes it clear what the team was set up to do: "to promote unity amongst Malaysians." And although the Malaysian government is putting no money into the team, Malaysian businesses such as Proton (owner of Lotus Cars), Sepang International Circuit, Tune Group, Naza Motors, the Motorsports Association of Malaysia and Automobile Association of Malaysia are all backers.
Lotus is in good hands on the track, now faster than Virgin and HRT and currently in position to secure the vital 10th place championship position that comes with a £17 million prize bonus. It has the finances to keep developing, with a major upgrade is on its way for its current ‘home' race at Silverstone, and there are confident claims that it will be causing the established teams problems in the near future.
Limited technical changes in the coming seasons mean it is unlikely to climb towards previous levels too soon and unless the team comes up with a radical concept it will have to wait until the major changes due for 2013 are introduced for a step change opportunity that could help it break back into the front-running teams.
But by then, it will have to be delivering for 1Malaysia. And if the desire for it to move to Malaysia still stands, it remains to be seen how that would sit for Norwich-born Gascoyne and the loyal team that has so far put this great marque back on the right track... |
