SEI cast comes in support of PHL | Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, January 02, 2007]
|
| | Movies and sports. Now these are the two common factors that never fails to tie Indians together.
In a unique promotional campaign, the cast of 'Salaam-E-Ishq' would be supporting PHL, the premier hockey tournament in India. Apart from them, there have been other brand ambassadors too who have tied up with each team in the league in order to uplift the team spirit and provide popular support to the teams off the field.
So while Southern superstar Madhavan backs Chennai Veerans, Jimmy Sheirgill comes out in support for Sher-e-Jalandar. Cricketer VVS Laxman makes his priorities clear for Hyderabad Sultans while Ravi Shastri stands up for Maratha Warriors. This is not all as Debashish Mohanty backs Orissa Steelers while Prakash Padukone champions the cause of Bangalore Lions.

"Today we have moved from left of center to the right" - Mani Ratnam | Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, January 02, 2007] |
| |
As the release date of January 12 comes close, Mani Ratnam talks about his film GURU.
"If you are ambitious, if you have dreams, India is the place for you - today. But it wasn't like this always. After independence, we were a huge nation, a young nation, where abstinence was respectable, ambition was not; where society took precedence over the individual.
Today we have moved from left of center to the right. When did this happen? How did this happen? Or did it happen in front of us and we couldn't see it? GURU is a revisiting of that time, of those decades during which India changed, slowly but surely.
And the mirror for that change is the life of one man - GURUKANT DESAI!"

Yukta Mookhey gyrates to Bhojpuri item number
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 03, 2007]
Sad, but true.
After making a disastrous debut in 'Pyaasa' years back where she starred opposite Aftab Shivdasani, her Bollywood career moved nowhere. Some aborted projects and a 'Katputtli' later she has now set her sights on Bhojpuri films. She makes her debut there with an item song for the film 'Kab Kahaba Tu I Love You' which is a film by Udit Narayan.
Nothing wrong with anything stated above except for the fact that the item number she is seen in is downright tacky. With someone like Yukta, one expected a better presentation on screen but in the song she comes across as just another imported-from-Mumbai newcomer item girl who is desperate to find her few moments of glory on celluloid.
'Kab Kahaba Tu I Love You' stars Amar Upadhyay along with new find Gul with Udit Narayan doing a cameo with wife Deepa Narayan. |

Directors we would like to see more in coming years - Part I
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 03, 2007]
Just like any other year, even 2006 saw a number of first time directors trying to make their presence felt in the Bollywood film making scene. A super successful year only helped the cause as number of directors showed potential and promised an extended outing in the years to come. Here we present a list of Top-10 newcomers who impressed with their work behind the camera and made sure that they are talked about in the coming years as they bag more projects.
1. Shirish Kunder - Jaan-E-Mann
Shirish Kunder may still be regretting the time when he said yes to the clash of his 'Jaan-E-Mann' with 'Don' on Diwali. Because if that wouldn't have been the case, his film may have created a different story at the box office! A well made film that showcased Shirish as a multi faceted personality who knew his job at storytelling in an innovative manner, 'Jaan-E-Mann' had an experimental narrative which may have become iconic if only the film could have sustained at the box office. Last heard, he was on the verge of signing up with a big production house for yet another multi crore extravaganza.
2. Kabir Khan - Kabul Express
'Qabool Hai' - This is what one ended up saying after seeing Kabir Khan's first feature film 'Kabul Express'. Certainly not a novice behind the camera due to numerous documentary films behind him, Kabir knew his job well when it came to making a film. Though the film's theme was not of the kind that would appeal to one and all, he ensured that for his target audience, there were enough dramatic, thrilling and light moments to keep them engaged for the two hours they were spending in the auditorium. Knowing YRF's penchant for encouraging promising newcomers to make different projects for them, one looks forward to see if Kabir has something more interesting to offer in the months ahead.
3. Saket Chaudhary - Pyaar Ke Side Effects
He kept his film simple. And in the process ensured that audience had a sweet and simple outing when they went in to watch 'Pyaar Ke Side Effects'. There wasn't any extensive expectation building for the film that only worked in the film's favor. This light hearted frothy entertainer had lots to offer in a small package - some romance, some comedy, some emotional moments, some good songs and some very good performances! And yes, Saket was the first man in the world to actually imagine a fully clothed Mallika getting his film pass the safety mark at the box office.
4. Dibakar Banerjee - Khosla Ka Ghosla
Oh, what a wait! But hasn't that been simply worth it? Aided by Jaideep Sahni's script, first time director Dibakar Banerjee came up with a near flawless tale in the form of 'Khosla Ka Ghosla'. If only the film was made in UK or US with an Indian cast, it may well have been heralded as a crossover film. But in India, it took almost 3 years to finally see the light of the day! Still, when it came, it did wonders due to its fresh style of narrative, some brilliant natural performances and a tale that never tended to drag even for a moment. Dibakar, chak de phatte!
5. Naseeruddin Shah - Yun Hota To Kya Hota
An actor par excellence, Naseeruddin Shah may have realized the importance of marketing and power of product placement once 'Yun Hota To Kya Hota' came and went. A very good film that was told in an utmost sensitive manner, YHTKH suffered on multiple counts for reasons which were beyond the actual two hour movie. The film wasn't marketed aggressively and saw an abrupt release at the theatres. The screen count and placement wasn't much impressive either and the film proved to be a disaster at the box office. Sad to see a truly involving tale not reaching out to the audience in the way it rightly deserved. |

Directors we would like to see more in coming years - Part II
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 03, 2007]
6. Raksha Mistry - Hasnain Hyderabadwala - The Killer
Bhatts have been known to market their films aggressively, especially when newcomers are at the helm of direction. While directors like Anurag Basu and Mohit Suri have gained from the smart strategy adopted by Bhatts in placing their films in the market, it was quite a surprise to see a low key release of 'The Killer'. Average music didn't help the cause either. Result? A decent effort by first time director duo of Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala went relatively unnoticed at the box office. A fair entertainer, it also suffered since the entire cast and crew openly proclaimed about the film being a take off on Tom Cruise starrer 'The Collateral', hence resulting in a some negative press days before the film's release.
7. Sachin Bajaj - Naksha
Those who have watched Sunny Deol-Viveik Oberoi starrer 'Naksha' would agree that the film did entertain if one ventured into the theatres to watch a 'masala' entertainer! Sachin Bajaj's directorial debut suffered from the fact that it wasn't even seen in the major cities/multiplexes due to pre-conceived notions about the movie and its keeping-low-on-box-office star cast. Sachin Bajaj had done his homework well before starting this mythological meet fantasy meet adventure tale and hence it would have been heart breaking to see an entire effort going down the drain due to the film's below average performance. The guy certainly needs another chance.
8. Homi Adajania - Being Cyrus
Just like 'Khosla Ka Ghosla', even 'Being Cyrus' was ready for years, though not for the same time as the former. When released, it impressed its target audience - the urban crowds and brought to fore a new facet of Saif Ali Khan! English being the film's official language was hardly a hindrance as Homi Adajania knew what was best for his film. Not belonging to a particular genre, the film came close to being a dark comedy cum thriller and marked the arrival of yet another promising film maker. Are the big daddies of corporate film making houses listening?
9. Vikram Chopra - Fight Club - Members Only
After Sachin Bajaj, if there was another film maker who impressed when it came to churning out a masala entertainer aimed at the masses, it was Vikram Chopra. He knew the art of pumping in some high adrenalin drive when it came to sheer kicks and punches and if only he gets a better script to execute the next time around, he may well be the next big action director. His 'Fight Club - Members Only' wasn't great cinema by any means but for the young ones looking at some time pass popcorn munching fun, it wasn't a bad outing at all.
10. Shivam Nair - Ahista Ahista
Shivam Nair and Naseeruddin Shah could well identify with each other since their films suffered on exactly similar grounds. Average promotion, poor market placement and not so impressive cinema lineage meant a quick exit for Shivam Nair's 'Ahista Ahista'. Yes, the film did become stagnant at times, but the sensitivity shown by the director in telling an innocent tale deserves appreciation. Given a stronger script and screenplay, Shivam Nair shows the potential to come up with more beautiful tales in the times to come. |

Box Office Analysis
Exclusive by Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 04, 2007]
First weekend performance of latest release
'I See You' was the sole release of the week but as expected it didn't arrive with any kind of bang! In fact let alone the bang, there wasn't even a slight noise of any kind as it opened to a cold response all over. In fact the film's reception was so poor that 'I See You' hardly seemed like an A project with Arjun Rampal in the lead and foreign locales as its strong point. There were always apprehensions about the film taking anything more than a 50% opening but what came as an absolute shocker was near empty houses that welcomed the film. The film has hardly generated any kind of positive response [except for Arjun's performance] from any section of media while audience has hardly watched it to pass their judgment. A poor end to a very good year for Bollywood!
Last week's movies
It was first mentioned in this section that 'Bhagam Bhag' would comfortably out-gross Priyadarshan's biggest success 'Garam Masala'. With an excellent 21 crore + first week, it should be able to do so in 2 or at maximum 3 weeks as the film has proved to be a runaway success for Priyan, Akshay, Govinda and Paresh. Mumbai was tremendous with a 4 crore + total while Delhi that had been thirsting for a true blue masala entertainer for long due to an uneven release of 'Dhoom 2', lapped it up to contribute more than 2 crores. Delhi NCR came third with 1.5 crores in total while Ahmedabad was quite good too with 1 crore +. The film has registered good first week numbers across A, B and C centers, something which is a hall mark of a universal success. With 'I See You' hardly proving to be a competition and no worthwhile release before January 12th [when 'Guru', 'Risk' and 'Anwar' arrive], 'Bhagam Bhag' should prove to be a 'bhag'-away hit. Akshay Kumar has another success under his belt now while Govinda makes a successful comeback, with or without all of his scenes!
From the past
It was quite obvious that 'Kabul Express' won't necessarily take a fall similar to a regular commercial film. A bigger fall in collections was expected and hence after a 7 crore first week, the film slid down to 2.5 crores in collections. Still, no shame here for this extremely well directed film by Kabir Khan who has impressed one and all with his very first feature film and is now much sought after in 2007. The film is now a shade below 10 crores but should manage to drag along due to few more open weeks ahead. The film held on best in Mumbai where it registered 85 lakhs after a 2 crore opening week but is a near washout in Delhi where it garnered just about 3 lakhs. Expect the original DVDs and VCDs of the film to be out in a 3-4 weeks time.
In it's second week, 'Aryan - The Unbreakable' has been completely broken and registered a measly 15 lakhs. At just about 1 crore, it is a disaster for Sohail Khan on the same lines as 'I - Proud To Be Indian'. Sneha Ullal, who started off with a hit in the form of 'Lucky - No Time For Love' now has a miss in 'Aryan - The Unbreakable'.
'Babul' crashed completely in its 3rd week and zero interest shown by anyone from the cast or crew to help in further promoting the film and keeping the audience's interest alive in watching it at theatres further proved that everyone had resigned to fate. With just 1 crore coming from the entire country, a 16.5 crore current total of 'Babul' is just not impressive. The beginning and end of year was just not happy for Amitabh Bachchan as he saw both 'Family - Ties Of Blood' and 'Baabul' performing poorly at the box office.
With no new releases other than 'Bhagam Bhag' working universally at the box office, it was a great opportunity for 'Dhoom 2' to consolidate on its now-biggest-grosser status. Apart from a 21 crore week for 'Bhagam Bhag', 'D2' was the only film to register good numbers as it collected 4 crores in its 5th week. The film did quite well in both Mumbai [65 lakhs] and Delhi [57 lakhs]. Standing firm at 80 crores and still counting, it has set a huge benchmark for newer films to follow. Million dollar question is - will the record be broken in 2007?
'Vivah' is now not just 'a journey from engagement to marriage' but 'a dream journey' for everyone who has been associated with the film. With a nominal 20% fall and the 7th week registering more than 1.5 crore, 'Vivah' is now just a shade below 25 crores. The biggest surprise success of the year gone by.
In the future
'Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana' is the sole release of the coming week but it is not even getting a decent chain of theatres for itself. This Rekha-Mahima-Kim-Vasundhara starrer chic-flick is not coming at majority of multiplexes which tells the tale. No fireworks whatsoever are expected from the film. |

Rekha romances Sachin
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 04, 2007]
No one makes a man feel as important and complete as Rekha can. And she does it once more in her upcoming film 'Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana' where she croons sweet nothings in the ears of none other than Sachin Khedekar.
In the film, she spends some cozy intimate moments with middle aged Khedekar while sitting atop a swing and croons the eternal love song 'Din Dhal Jaaye' from the film 'Guide'. What surprises most is the fact that she sings the number herself.
As an unplugged number, the song moves at an extremely slow pace with musical instruments making an extremely limited appearance. Since the song has been picturised at night in a lawn, there is also a whiff of air in the background that creates a feel of seduction and romance.
A number that could well have been the USP of the film surprisingly comes quite late in the day when the film is just hours away from the release. |

Risk promotion heats up at just the right time
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 04, 2007]
This is one shift-ahead that has only worked in advantage for a film.
Randeep Hooda's 'Risk' was originally slated to arrive in December but was eventually postponed to December 12th. While the film still faces a challenge from the mighty 'Guru' that comes on the same day, what has still worked to a good extent for it is an extensive promotional drive that has helped it gain further visibility.
Makers of the film have done well in using the star power of Vinod Khanna and the rugged appeal of this Vishram Sawant film to its advantage. Result is that the film's promos have started catching up heat and those who have lived on films like 'Satya', 'Company' and other underworld films are now keenly awaiting the release of 'Risk'.
Another factor that has contributed in a major way to the film catching eyeballs is Tanushree's hit number 'Hitchkee' that has picked up amazingly well amongst the masses, especially the gentry.
With the film's target audience belonging to single screens regulars, 'Risk' may just turn out to be a small success at the beginning of the year. |

Amisha Patel's makeover creates a stir
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 04, 2007]
Just how much can a few photographs do to you? Actually a lot!
On the cover of a reputed lifestyle magazine, she has been featured as a style icon where she has shed her inhibitions and appeared in a clothing line that leaves little to imagination. The good part about her photographs both on the cover and inside the magazine is that she never once looks vulgar or cheap and carries herself with aplomb.
Amisha Patel has long been considered as a goody-two-shoes girl who just knows two things - giggle or weep! She has played a coy'n'docile female in so many films since her 'Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai' debut years back that one has almost lost count.
With the latest photo shoot she has done, Amisha has certainly rediscovered herself and gained a lot more fans than she has over the years. Now it's over to Bollywood dream merchants to recognize this new facet of hers and cast her in ultra glam roles in their films. |

10 females who provided best support in 2006
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 04, 2007]
Pick up any 10 films releasing in a particular month and most of them would be dominated by male actors. In such a scenario when even a leading lady finds it difficult to find a breathing place for a performance, it is quite a tough task to make a mark as a supporting actress. 2006 was no different with only a handful of females managing to be a cut above the rest when it came to supporting roles. But those who did, they impressed!
1. Konkana Sen - Omkara
What a fine actress Konkana Sen has turned out to be! An year where she had number of releases, she impressed most as Langda Tyagi's wife! And no, she wasn't one of those gaon-ki-naari or a suppressed lot. She also wasn't one of those torch bearing women liberation association member. She was just like one of those urban women who knew how to keep issues at bay, run household chores, keep your husband happy through his stomach or the part below [as she proudly tells Kareena Kapoor while training her on marital hood], know about your sexual desires and even kill your own husband when principals dominate over blind love!
2. Kirron Kher - Fanaa, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna
She may not have done anything different from what she has done before in 'Hum Tum' or 'Veer Zaara'. But well, who was complaining? As a mother who knew what was right and what was not, she was at her intelligent best yet again in contemporary films like 'Fanaa' and KANK. Think of an intelligent urban woman soaked in traditions and love for her family and Kirron Kher is the first name that comes to mind. Wish there was more of her in 'Rang De Basanti' though!
3. Neha Dhupia - Chup Chup Ke
If only Kareena Kapoor would not have been a bigger name, got to appear in more dance numbers and met Shahid Kapoor in the end, Neha Dhupia may well have been the lead heroine of 'Chup Chup Ke'. She was the female with more dialogues, better scenes and an interesting part to play and did well in whatever she was asked to do by director Priyadarshan. She looked beautiful too which was an icing on the cake. From acting in a bit role in 'Garam Masala' to graduating to a supporting meatier role in 'Chup Chup Ke' - Would Priyadarshan be offering her something better next time around?
4. Bipasha Basu - Dhoom 2, Omkara
She may have played an inconsequential part in the first half of 'Dhoom 2' but was a delight to watch in the second half where she got to play a dumb blonde! She was hot in 2 piece bikini and equally cute as an Indian based in Brazil who struggled with her Hindi but knew how to treat her guests with 'butter naans', 'butter paneer' and 'butter chicken'! It was a new facet of Bipasha Basu that one saw on big screen and no one complained. Her other notable act was as 'Billo Chamanbahar' where her solitary 'beedi' was good enough reason for people to watch the film again.
5. Isha Kopikar - Don
Her role may have been cut to size to accommodate two Shahrukh Khans, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani and others but she showed what she was capable of (yet again) in 3-4 odd scenes where she was present. The scene when Don [disguised as Vijay] meets her for the first time in their den and Isha just offers her a glass of water while saying nothing had enough power in it. Also, in the context of the film, she was the dominant character in the song 'Aaj Ki Raat' since Priyanka hardly knew what she was getting into. In the end, Isha got the 'don' and this is what eventually mattered!
6. Sandhya Mridul - Deadline
Can we have more of this talented actress please? Last year she was awesome in 'Page 3' and though her 'Deadline' met with a terrible response at the box office, those who saw the film only had good words to talks about Sandhya Mridul. As a small time theater actress who had to turn into a seductress cum kidnapper in the film as per the demand of the situation, she was tantalizingly sexy yet dangerous. The woman knows how to play her cards well, as demonstrated earlier in 'Saathiya', and one wishes more film makers take a notice of her acting prowess.
7. Achint Kaur - Corporate
"Can't you do a small compromise by sending your girlfriend to jail for the crime committed by my husband?" How many sisters would have the guts to say so to their brothers? Well Achint Kaur was gusty enough as she begged, pleaded, threatened and emotionally blackmailed her brother Kay Kay to do so in order to save the life of her husband [Rajat Kapoor]. As an upper class female for whom it was just her immediate family and the business empire that mattered, it showed the ugly side of high class society!
8. Masumi Makhija - Woh Lamhe
If there will be a horror film made soon, Masumi Makhija may well be the front runner for a led role! As a non-existent female who was Kangana Ranuat's mystery fear in 'Woh Lamhe', she was quite terrifying when she got into a hysteric act on screen. Coming out of nowhere at number of instances in the film, she showed that fear lurks not just in the night around secret alleys but even on open streets in broad daylight!
9. Simone Singh - Being Cyrus
From a coy female to a scheming lady - Simone Singh showed the complex side of her character in 'Being Cyrus'. As a woman who was the driving force behind all criminal acts of her younger brother in the film, she was admirable as the wife of a monster of a husband played by Boman Irani. She was taking a lot lying down in the film but the reasons for the same sent a shock wave when her real self was revealed in the end.
10. Taraana Raja - Pyaar Ke Side Effects
Taraana Raja? Well, who is that? Guess is that 999 out of 1000 readers won't be able to recollect the name. Now those of you who have watched, think of Rahul Bose's sister in the film who didn't really have many kind words to say about men! Does the character sound familiar? As an educated urban female who could just be your neighbor next door, she was quite good on screen as she nagged her husband over his likes and dislikes for home cooked meals! |

Vikram Bhatt pairs with regular Praveen Bhatt for 'Red'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 05, 2007]
Director Vikram Bhatt and cinematographer Praveen Bhatt are almost Siamese twins when it comes to their projects. After all the two have been working together for years now!
A Mahesh Bhatt protegee who has earlier worked in his films like 'Janam', 'Naam', 'Kaash', 'Aashique', 'Saathi', 'Sadak', 'Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi' and around half a dozen more flicks, Praveen Bhatt has formed a fruitful partnership with Vikram Bhatt as well over the years.
And now Vikram Bhatt and Praveen Bhatt have united together again for 'Red' that stars Aftab Shivdasani, Celina Jaitley, Amrita Rao and Sushant Singh in principal roles. This ace cinematographer's touch is quite evident in each of the frames, especially due to the now-famous night-blue lighting that Bhatts have been famous for.
Praveen Bhatt has earlier handled the cinematography for Vikram Bhatt films like 'Raaz', 'Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage', 'Awara Paagal Deewana', 'Footpath', 'Inteha', 'Aitbaar', 'Elaan', 'Jurm' and 'Ankahee'. |

"Mika, Tune Pappi Kyon Li?" - Meet Brothers
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 05, 2007]
"Mika - Tune Pappi Kyon Li" - that's the question Meet Brothers have been openly asking Mika with their latest song offering that has the namesake lyrics.
As a follow up to the Mika-Rakhi Sawant kissing controversy that rocked the nation last year, Meet Brothers and Mika, who are friends in real life, have cut a new album which has this song as its major attraction. The music video of the song is out and also aims at some laughter with a female model giving a tell tale account of the kissing, a la Madame Sawant's outburst in front of media when the actual incident had happened.
Guess how would Rakhi Sawant be reacting to this since last heard she was planning to make a music video herself in retaliation to this! |

Akshaye Khanna set to run away with the show in SEI
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 05, 2007]
When 'Salaam E Ishq' was in the making, all must have thought that the film would have Salman Khan hogging all the limelight and glory. But with the latest promos of the film being out, it appears that Akshaye Khanna would be the young man who may eventually run away with the honors!
With numerous witty lines belonging to his character named Shiven who is a nice man to be with but has only one problem in life, commitment to marriage, it seems quite obvious that Akshaye would bring the house down every time he appears on screen.
Paired opposite Ayesha Takia again after 'Shaadi Se Pehle', one looks forward to another spirited performance by Akshaye Khanna after '36 China Town' and 'Aap Ki Khatir' that came last year. |
