Ashley Cole out for three months
Ashley Cole faces a fight to be fit in time for the World Cup finals after the defender fractured his ankle in the 2-1 defeat at Everton.
The England and Chelsea left-back is almost certainly out for the remainder of the domestic season and his place in Fabio Capello's squad for the finals this summer will depend entirely on his rehabilitation programme.
England open their campaign in South Africa on June 12 with a match against the United States but Cole will have to convince Capello he is back to full fitness before he names his 23-man squad.
Ironically, Cole's injury will provide former Chelsea team-mate Wayne Bridge with the chance to become Capello's first-choice left-back.
Bridge has been at the centre of a media storm involving his former Stamford Bridge team-mate John Terry in recent weeks.
Terry was stripped of the England captaincy by Capello after newspaper allegations he had an affair with Bridge's ex-girlfriend - one-time French lingerie model Vanessa Perroncel.
A spokesman for Chelsea confirmed Cole would miss the next three months of the season.
"Ashley suffered a fracture to his left ankle in last night's game against Everton and is expected to be out of action for approximately three months," he said.
Chelsea are fortunate they have enough cover to cope with Cole's absence.
Russia international Yury Zhirkov is comfortable at left-back and Portugal international Paulo Ferreira can also play in the same position despite being signed by former boss Jose Mourinho as a right-back.
Chelsea's defeat at Everton has left them just one point clear of Manchester United at the top of the Barclays Premier League.
Terry, reeling from the loss of the England captaincy and further revelations about his private life, was at fault for both of Everton's goals at Goodison Park.
The club have since given the defender permission to fly out to Dubai in a bid to patch up his marriage to wife Toni.
Terry left Heathrow on Thursday and will miss Saturday's FA Cup fifth round tie with Cardiff at Stamford Bridge.

Inter Coach Jose Mourinho: Chelsea Have 'Suffered' Since I Left Stamford Bridge

Inter coach Jose Mourinho has taken a swipe at his former employers Chelsea, claiming that the road has only been downhill for the west London club since he headed out of Stamford Bridge.
The Blues have won only an FA Cup since the 'Special One' left England. Now plying his trade with the Serie A giants, the Portuguese manager maintains that his former employers have sorely missed his presence.
"Chelsea have suffered in the last two years, and it's no coincidence that their decline happened after I left," Mourinho said, according to The Mirror.
"We had a unique relationship as a manager, players and fans, and when you break that, it's not easy to fix. They've had a lot of coaches since and maybe some didn't have the mentality for the club. Maybe they tried to change too much of what we put in place.
"I knew there was no time for a long-term plan with the owner they have at Stamford Bridge. You must win the title in your first season or say bye-bye. I gave them what they needed but I always knew it wasn't a job that would last forever. Maybe they would've been better off sticking with me than changing manager when they did."
Of the three managers before Carlo Ancelotti to take the reins of the club following the departure of the former Porto boss, only Guus Hiddink managed to guide the club to silverware in the form of an FA Cup triumph last season.
Mourinho also told Nuts magazine: "Inter have asked me to try to win the Champions League for them, and I'll attempt to give them this – so they're stuck with me for a little while yet! Now we have to play an important couple of matches against Chelsea and this is obviously a very special game for me."
And concerning the Blues' Italian manager - with whom he shared a frosty relationship during Carletto's Serie A days - Mourinho couldn't resist adding: "But I'm a part of Chelsea's history forever and they'll always be a big part of me. Let's see if Ancelotti can finish his time at Chelsea with a record as good as mine!"
Inter host Chelsea at the San Siro on Wednesday, 24 February, in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.

UFO berlegar di stadium Chelsea
LAKARAN yang disiarkan oleh sebuah akhbar di Britain menunjukkan seorang saksi melukis objek yang dilihatnya dari sebuah pesawat di Lapangan Terbang Heathrow.
LONDON - Seorang pegawai polis Britain mendakwa dia melihat sebuah objek terbang tidak dikenali (UFO) berlegar di atas stadium kelab bola sepak Chelsea, Stamford Bridge pada 1999.
Maklumat itu didedahkan selepas fail tentera mengenai UFO tidak lagi diklasifikasikan sebagai rahsia dan boleh didedahkan kepada orang awam sejak semalam.
Pegawai itu menyatakan dia melihat cahaya kekuningan dan objek itu bertukar dari empat segi kepada satu formasi berlian sebelum ia hilang daripada pandangan.
Fail itu mengandungi lebih 6,000 muka surat dan mempunyai maklumat mengenai UFO dari 1994 hingga 2000.
Ia turut mengandungi maklumat mengenai sebuah pesawat Boeing 737 yang mendekati Lapangan Terbang Manchester dan UFO.

LONDON: Ashley Cole boleh 'membebaskan diri' daripada masalah peribadi dengan memilih antara Real Madrid dan Barcelona ketika kedua-dua kelab gergasi Sepanyol itu bersedia membuat rundingan dengan Chelsea bagi perpindahan bernilai £25 juta (RM137 juta).
