It’s a do-or-die mission for Malaysia against India
IT IS only the opening match but for the Malaysian men’s hockey team, it is a do-or-die mission when they play against India at the Major Dyan Chand National Hockey Stadium today.
Malaysia also have defending champions Australia and Pakistan to content with in Group A. The only team ranked lower than Malaysia in the group are Scotland.
And if they lose to India, they face almost impossible tasks of having to beat Pakistan and Australia to get into the semi-finals.
Malaysia have beaten India before and there is no reason to think they cannot do it again. But India now has home ground advantage and it will take some doing.
“We knew when the draw was released that making the last four will be very tough indeed. Still we have hope to win the match (against India),” coach Stephen van Huizen yesterday.
The Malaysians are using the Delhi Games to prepare for next month’s Asiad in Guangzhou where an automatic berth to the 2012 London Olympics is also at stake.
Malaysia have their best team for the Commonwealth Games and the match against India is a good test.
Malaysia come into the Delhi Games having played matches against club sides and in a four-nation tournament in Paris against teams ranked lower than them.
They also had Test matches against Ireland and warm-up games against New Zealand.
“It is the best we could get as the big teams had other commitments. I suppose we will see here how that has affected us. I will field my best combination tomorrow (today),” said Stephen.
There is no pressure on the team as winning the match is not a priority for them and Stephen is hoping to find out whether they are tactically good enough. |
