Buku seterusnya...

"Desert Dawn" by Waris Dirie

Synopsis
Fashion model, UN ambassador and courageous spirit, Waris Dirie was born into a traditional family of tribal desert nomads in Somalia. She told her story - enduring, at five years old, the ancient and savage custom of female circumcision; running away at 12 on foot through the desert in order to escape an arranged marriage; being discovered by Terence Donovan as she worked as a cleaner in London; and becoming a top fashion model - in her book, "Desert Flower". Although Waris Dirie fled her homeland, she never forgot the country and culture that moulded her. The world of famine and violence, where women have no voice and no place - the very world that nearly destroyed her also gave her the tools to survive. In this book, she traces the roots of her courage, resilience and humour back to her motherland, and most particularly to her mother. "Desert Dawn" is the story of that return and a testimony to the stubborn fact that you can love something dearly and yet not love all that it represents.

EXPRESS
'A story that traverses continents, spans worlds of human experience and human pain...'

The Voice
It's honest, warming and insightful.

Book Description
'Waris' story is one of remarkable courage...she emerges a real champion. She is the most beautiful inspiration to anyone' - Elton John Waris, one of 12 children, was born into a traditional family of desert nomads in East Africa. She remembers her early childhood as carefree - running with her brothers, racing camels and moving on with her family to the next grazing spot - until it came her turn to meet the old woman who administered the ancient custom imposed on most Somalian girls: circumcision. Waris suffered this torture when she was just five years old. Then, aged 12, when her father attempted to arrange a marriage with a 60 year old stranger in exchange for five camels - she took flight. After an extraordinary escape through the dangerous desert she made her way to London and worked as a maid for the Somalian ambassador until that family returned home. Penniless and speaking little English, she became a janitor in McDonalds where she was famously discovered by a fashion photographer. A truly inspirational self-portrait of a woman whose spirit is as breathtaking as her beauty.

Synopsis
Waris Dirie, whose name means "desert flower", was born in Somalia of nomadic parents. She underwent extreme female circumcision at the age of five, and when she was 13 her father sold her into marriage with a 60-year-old for five camels, at which time she ran away. She was discovered by a fashion photographer in the United States whilst working as a janitor at McDonald's, and became a model who has been used to promote Revlon skin-care products. She also speaks on women's rights in Africa and travels the world to give lectures on behalf of the UN. This is her autobiography.

From the Publisher
Comment from a critic
"Waris Dirie is beautiful on the outside, and courageous, determined and inspiring on the inside. This story will make you weep for what people are capable of doing to their children, and fill you with admiration for one woman's strength". Irish News

She was appointed by the United Nations in 1997 as a special ambassador for women's rights to eliminate the practice of female genital mutilation. She lives in New York. Cuba try baca Le Prisonera, which is abt Malika Oufkir and Raja Morocco. Bacalah, mmg best sgt! It's a true story..mcmana Malika yg masa kecik jadi teman sepermainan anak raja, bila remaja, dia, ma ...

Amazon.co.uk Review
La Prisonniere topped the French bestseller lists for many weeks, selling well over 100,000 copies, but one's initial reaction is that something must have got lost in the translation. The style is dour, to say the least, and the opening chapters contain a catalogue of unnecessary family information that may have the reader nodding off. Curiously, though, as the pace of the action heats up, the deadness of the prose comes into its own. This is not a story that needs to be oversold and reads all the better for its minimalist delivery. The bare bones of the book are classic derring-do adventure, and Hollywood almost certainly has its eyes on the film rights--complete with American cast.

Malika Oufkir was born into a well-connected Moroccan family and when she was five years old she was chosen to be the special companion of Lalla Mina, King Muhammad V's daughter. Malika was taken away from her family and remained confined within the palace at Rabat for 14 years. She then had two years of vague normality before her father, General Oufkir, was implicated in an assassination attempt on Muhammad's successor, King Hassan II. The General was executed and Malika and the rest of her family were slung into a remote desert gaol where they remained for 15 years. Their release was only secured after they tunnelled their way out of the prison and remained at liberty for five days. The resulting furore after their recapture led to the family being transferred to house arrest and it was not until 1996 that the they were able to leave the country.

If the action drives the narrative, it is the clashes between Middle-Eastern and Western culture that are the most telling. Even in the 1960s, it was de rigueur for the King to have a harem full of concubines, and throughout the book one senses the tension between the materialistic, hedonistic indulgence of the ruling elite and their conformity to Muslim culture. Oufkir is a keen observer of her own injustices, but is rather slower on the uptake when it comes to the wider injustices of a despotic regime. --John Crace

i have read the article in reader's digest before.. about waris story, how the circumcision was performed... kalau ikutkan hati, pengsan membacanya sahaja...

bila nak buang air tu, rasa tersakit amat sangat.. aduhaii..

daln masa dia umur 5 tahun dah kena macam tu, kalau tak silap, dibiarkan pula for one week at a hut after circumcision ceremony to feed for her own self.. la budak 5 tahun mana la reti nak cari makan sendiri...

mmg rasa ngeri sangat...

what i remembered was, she had to do an operation to ensure she can pee tanpa rasa sakit... urghhh

assalamu`alaikum

there's really one book that i really love and would recommend to all of you

Do they hear you when you cry?
by : Fauziya Kassindja

sangat sangat best. lebih kurang macam kes waris juga. fauziya ni seorang perempuan yg sangat bagus, solat tak tinggal, mengaji dan sebagainya. adik beradik perempuan semua, the turning point came bila ayah dia meninggal. adat di tempat dia, kalau ayah meninggal dan tiada anak lelaki, automatik semua harta dapat kepada family sebelah ayah dia (i.e. adik beradik si ayah) tanpa mementingkan kepentingan anak-anak. dlm kes ni, mereka dihalau keluar dari rumah sendiri. lepas tu makcik dia nak kahwinkan dia dgn seorang lelaki yg dah ada isteri tiga.

mak fauziya sgt kasihankan fauziya. to undergo marriage, dia org kena lalui female genital mutilation (FGM). maka mak dia serahkan duit dan suruh fauziya lari dari situ. she escaped and finally arrive in the United States to seek asylum.

go and find it!

masa pergi bangkok, terjumpa buku ni.. as thailand's insights... tapi tak beli, sebab mahal sgt... nampak menarik, sebab cerita pasal prostitute kat thailand yang menjalinkan hubungan dengan seorang Britian, and at the end of the book, an analysis from a professor about relationship with sex worker, the impact etc... bagus gak baca artikel prof tu, sebab dia buat kajian bahawa sex worker kat thai treat sex as part of their job, they changed partners, and if you want to have serious relationship with one of them, you better beware, sebab they are like 'pisau cukur'. sekadar mencari rezeki untuk makan pakai..

Editorial Reviews
Pattaya Mail
"Best book regarding relationships with bargirls that you can ever read. Should be compulsory reading for all first-timers to Thailand."

Bangkok Post
"Of all of its local wisdom, Private Dancer ought to be made available to every tourist at port of entry."

Book Description
Pete wanders into a Bangkok go-go bar and meets the love of his life. Joy is young, stunning, and a pole dancer. In a roller-coaster ride of sex, drugs, and deception, Pete discovers that his own very private dancer is not all she claims to be. Far from being the love of his life, Joy is his own personal nightmare!

Hey, Joe! Me love you long time., November 22, 2005
Reviewer:        Joseph Haschka (Glendale, CA USA)

When I was young and single, I fantasized about visiting Bangkok's fleshpot buffet. But, even 11 years in the Navy didn't provide the opportunity as I never made it away from Stateside. Now that I'm older, married, and only marginally wiser, I doubt that my wife would let me go - even if I could imagine conjuring up the energy to carouse once I got there. And there is, of course, the sobering specter of AIDS. But, should any of you young studs embark on the tour, PRIVATE DANCER should be required reading before reaching the airport departure gate.

Pete is a freelance writer hired by a publishing house to edit a new cookery book/travel guide for Thailand. Once ensconced in Bangkok, Pete is introduced to the red-light district by friend Nigel, where Pete meets pole dancer/prostitute Joy in the Zombie Bar. Pete is smitten despite advice from the resident expats that it's best not to get emotionally involved with a bar babe. And despite all the evidence, some provided by a private detective, that Joy is simply using Pete as a cash ATM, that she's married to a Thai man, and that she has sex with other farang (foreign) customers when he's out of town, Pete remains enamored of his PRIVATE DANCER. He desperately wants to believe her excuses, lies, and proclamations of true love - "I love you and have you in my heart only one. Miss you all the time."

Author Stephen Leather takes an interesting approach to the story, telling it alternately from the viewpoints of Pete, Joy, Pete's farang friends and acquaintances (Nigel, Big Ron, Bruce, Jimmy), the private detective Phiraphan, Pete's employer Alistair, and a certain Professor Bruno Mayer, an expert on prostitution in Thailand and cross-cultural relationships between the sex workers and their customers. What results is a fascinating and informative parable on the perils of falling for a Bangkok hooker that's probably just as valid no matter what the city, country, or nationality of the working girl. Indeed, as Stephen describes the milieu of Pete's tragic experience, the reader perhaps understands that it's more of a culture clash than anything else. From Joy's perspective, her life and means of getting money for herself and her family back in their village are nothing unusual or immoral. For her, emotional love for, and the provision of money by, a man are two sides of the same coin. The problem for westerner Pete, a Brit, is that he necessarily separates the two. In the end, the open-minded reader can rightly attach no blame to either, but only marvel at Pete's foolishness in the face of good advice from his Anglo and Australian friends that are old Bangkok hands.

PRIVATE DANCER seemed, at times, a bit too long for the message. In an email correspondence with Leather, I asked if the tale was based on the experience of anyone he knew. With utter candor, the author implied that at least some of the story derived from his own youthful follies. Perhaps Stephen was driven to over-emphasize the lesson - "Don't let this happen to you!" In any case, the book is an engaging addition to the backpack as you set out to sample the neon-bathed, x-rated delights of Patpong, Nana Plaza, and Soi Cowboy.

i suggest baca buku "RINCESS" by Jean Sasson... Nie pasal princess kat Saudi Arabia punye life... Jean Sasson ada a few books, yang i dah baca Princess den ...

"Not Without My Daughter" oleh  Betty Mahmoody dan William Hoffer.

Last sekali "SOLD" oleh Zana Muhsen.
