oo ni masuk new paper ah...

Another baby left like this
SO SAD...
Comment By Trudy Lim
IT happened just a short walk from my daughter's school.
I have walked in that area several times a week for the last five years, taking my children to and from school when they have extra classes or activities.
But some time on Saturday night or Sunday morning, a woman apparently went into labour and gave birth at the lift and lobby area of Block 623 Senja Road.
And the newborn baby girl was found abandoned, dead in a yellow plastic bag yesterday afternoon.
The signs point to a woman or girl who went into labour suddenly and probably gave birth alone - a pool of blood was seen in one of the block's two lifts on Saturday night.
Several residents said this morning that they had seen the blood stains.
The mother could have been unmarried or a teenager - scared, confused and desperate to get rid of the 'problem'.
According to residents in the area who talked to The New Paper this morning, the block is quiet and quite deserted at night and during the weekends.
One man, who identified himself only as Mr Shariff said: 'After 10 or 11pm the lifts are not much used. They are busy only when children are going to school and people are leaving for work.'
My heart goes out to the two girls in this case - the mother and baby.
I remember long ago, babies would be left outside convents. That way, distraught mothers could be sure the babies would be taken in and cared for.
We are more affluent now, but it seems things have not really changed that much.
There are still babies being abandoned.
With all the recent talk on a shortage of babies, we need to focus some attention on the few unwanted babies who are slipping through the cracks.
Each time I walk in the area now, watching toddlers in the playground, and the children lugging their heavy schoolbags, I'll be thinking of one baby girl who wasn't given a chance.

Remember her?
THIS little girl was one of the lucky ones.
She was found by 10-year-old Samuel Tan near a staircase in his Ang Mo Kio block in January 2000.
She had been abandoned in a paper bag on the eve of Hari Raya that year. The healthy baby girl was temporarily named Baby M and would be 4 years old this year.

BICARA KES DADAH MUHAMAD MOHAMAD ISHAK
HAMLI NAFI ADAKAN PARTI SEKS DENGAN MUHAMAD
Oleh
Chairul Fahmy Hussaini

BICARA KES DADAH MUHAMAD MOHAMAD ISHAK
HAMLI DAKWA KERJASAMA BERI KETERANGAN KEPADA CNB KERANA TERTEKAN
Oleh
Chairul Fahmy Hussaini
Perbicaraan disambung lusa. |

TAMPINES ROOFTOP DRAMA
Girl holds rescuers at bay with metal rod
But when she gets distracted...
By Arul John
FOR nearly an hour, a construction worker tried to persuade a 17-year-old girl to get off the roof where he was working.
She threatened to jump from the top of the 13-storey building if he came near her.
The man tried to convince her to leave and do his work at the same time.
It is not known why he did not seek help for such a long time.
But finally, after failing to persuade her, he called his supervisor and told him about the girl.
That is how the drama started yesterday morning at an HDB block on Tampines Street 83.
Around 8am, the construction worker, who was working on upgrading the block's lifts, climbed up a ladder leading to the roof.
He unlocked a metal sliding gate and pushed up another metal cover before getting up on to the rooftop.
The girl is believed to have climbed up the ladder on to the roof at 8.30am.
The worker's supervisor, who did not want to be named, told The New Paper: 'As the worker went up and down that ladder often during his work, he did not lock the sliding gate. The girl must have gone up that way.
'After noticing the girl on the roof, he told her to get off. He kept telling her this for nearly an hour in between doing his work.
'She threatened to jump off the building if he came near her. He then called me and I called the police.'
While on the roof, the girl picked up a 1.5m-long metal rod from among the materials on the roof.
Madam Norsiyah, a housewife in her 30s, told The New Paper: 'I was passing along the corridor of the opposite block and saw the girl walking near the rooftop water tank, waving the rod and shouting.
'She looked agitated and was very aggressive.'
A police spokesman said they were informed of the incident at 9.40am.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was informed at 9.44am and was at the scene within minutes.
OTHER RESCUE TEAMS
An eight-member Disaster Assistance & Rescue Team (Dart) and 12 other SCDF personnel arrived from Changi Fire Station.
They came with a fire engine, ambulance, special rescue tender and damage control tender.
They had a life pack, an inflatable cushion designed to break the fall of people from high places.
An SCDF spokesman said that minutes after they arrived at the scene, the life pack was rolled out and inflated to form a cushion 28.3 sq m in area and nearly 2.7m high.
This was placed on the ground below her to break her fall in case she jumped.
An SCDF paramedic and a female SCDF officer then teamed up with some police officers to talk her into getting off the roof.
The girl stood beside a 3.5m-high water tank.
The SCDF and police officers stood 2-3m from her and tried to talk to her.
But each time they moved towards her, she shouted at them to stay away and waved the rod menacingly.
A crowd of onlookers gathered below.
Meanwhile, away from her view, the Dart team climbed onto the rooftop using ropes, from the 13th storey.
They got behind the tank, scaled it and then moved quickly and silently towards the girl.
They watched the girl and the negotiating team from their height and waited.
At 10.15am, the Dart members noticed that the girl was distracted.
They then jumped from the water tank and grabbed her.
She didn't have a chance to react.
Moments later, the Dart members took her down the same ladder she used to climb on to the rooftop and took her to the void deck by lift.
DIFFICULT TO RESTRAIN
She was gritting her teeth as she came into public view and rescuers had a hard time restraining her, as our picture shows.
The girl, who does not live at the block, was taken by ambulance to Changi General Hospital.
The rod was not with her and may have been thrown away when she was being brought out of the block.
Two men who claimed to be working for the firm doing the lift upgrading declined to allow us up on the rooftop later, as the upgrading was still in progress.
The woman, whose identity was unknown, has been referred to the Institute of Mental Health.
The police said they are investigating |

Monkey tries to escape but...
Celebrity chimp climbs over electric barriers and is shot with a tranquilliser dart gun. But she runs straight into a reservoir
By Teh Jen Lee
AFTER the bustling crowds of the weekend, it was quiet at the zoo on Monday morning.
But all was not well in the chimpanzee enclosure.
For some reason, 6-year-old Rhamba was agitated.
It was possible she was being bullied or chased by the other 12 chimps in her enclosure.
She was upset enough to climb over the electric barriers on a tree.
She was zapped with electricity at least once but this was not enough to stop her from fleeing her 'home'.
A zoo worker saw her escape and alerted others who rushed to the scene.
One of them, probably a vet, fired a tranquilliser dart at Rhamba.
The dart hit the primate on her stomach but it did not stop her in her tracks immediately.
Her instincts told her to run, so she did.
Zookeepers dashed after her but they were no match for Rhamba - a chimpanzee can run much faster than a human.
She ran through two animal exhibits, straight into the Mandai reservoir.
And she drowned there before the zookeepers could get to her.
This is the first time in recent years that a chimp escape has been reported at the zoo.
Back in 1997, a zoo chimp scratched a visitor on a Saturday evening when it was on the lose for 10 minutes.
Staff had to disperse 1,000 visitors for safety reasons.
Rhamba was a celebrity of sorts in the zoo. Like Ah Meng, she had been one of the zoo's photo-taking chimps.
Born in July 1997, she was separated from her mother at birth and raised by humans.
After being trained to pose with visitors, she was kept in a cage so she could be produced easily for photography.
In 2001, she was returned to the chimp enclosure, which is about the size of a basketball court. There, she was reunited with her mother.
When The New Paper interviewed some frequent zoo visitors, some wondered whether the workers could have tried other ways of catching her, such as with nets.
Ms Alison Ng, 30, a zoo volunteer for four years, said: 'I know it's SOP (standard operating procedure) to tranquillise, but I would think it applied more to big animals like tigers and elephants.
'Since this chimp is quite used to human contact, maybe they could have got a keeper to try and calm it down first. If they did, but it started being agressive, then it's another story.'
Ironically, Rhamba's death happened on the day The Straits Times published a report on the zoo's new general curator, Dr Ken Gold, a primate expert. He started work on Mar 15.
When contacted, Dr Gold, who has worked with captive chimpanzees, gorillas, and orang utans for many years, said in a written reply: 'Standard operating procedures to safeguard visitors and animals necessitated the tranquillisation of the chimpanzee.'
Dr Shirley McGreal, who founded the International Primate Protection League (IPPL) in 1973, said the zoo was correct to try to tranquillise Rhamba.
'But it was most unfortunate that the chimp reached a location near water. Chimpanzees cannot swim,' she said.
The Singapore Zoo declined to say how many visitors were nearby when Rhamba escaped.
Could Rhamba have been coaxed back into the enclosure?
After all, as a 'photo chimp', she was used to human contact.
For a while in 2001, she was even ferried around by her keeper on a bicycle.
The zoo said it was investigating 'all of the events surrounding the escape and recapture attempt to determine the contributing factors leading to this isolated incident'.
Dr Gold said: 'The zoo has exhibited chimpanzees for 32 years in natural social groups and has had 29 successful births. Such incidents are rare and we are very sad over the tragic outcome.'
Modifications have been made to the exhibit to prevent such an incident from happening again, he added, without elaborating.
Animal welfare activist Louis Ng had got to know the chimpanzee when he was a volunteer in 2000.
He launched his first campaign to pressure the zoo to stop photo-taking with the chimps, claiming that he saw Rhamba being punched in the face to make her behave.
He went on to set up the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society.
Responding to Rhamba's death, Mr Ng said: 'To say that I am devastated is an understatement.
'I remember the times she would come and hug me, seeking comfort when times were hard.
'I would not be fighting for the rights of animals if not for her.'

TERTEKAN IBU TERLALU MENGONGKONG
SOALAN
SAYA seorang remaja perempuan berusia 15 tahun.
Saya sarankan agar anda memikirkan beberapa perkara berikut:
Tambahan pula terdapat sikap orang-orang tua seperti ibu anda bahawa 'Biar anak menangis, jangan sampai kita orang tua (ibu bapa) yang menangis.'
Cuba anda fikirkan, ibu anda mempertarungkan nyawanya sewaktu melahirkan anda.
Malah, jika berlaku keadaan 'pilih satu antara dua' dalam proses melahirkan anak, seseorang ibu rela mati asalkan anaknya hidup.
Anda mempunyai seorang adik perempuan berusia 11 tahun.
