IDOLS TEAM UP FOR HYPE UP
Reunited and it feels so good. The Top 4 finalists of both seasons of Singapore Idol share the stage for the first time at the upcoming Hype Up 2006 concert. JEANMARIE TAN catches up with the octet, who will sing three songs each and be paired up for duets

Taufik Batisah (Season 1 Winner)
Prepare for a showdown between the winners of Singapore Idol. Taufik's second album was supposed to be out last week. But now, it will only be released around end October or early November, the same time as Hady Mirza's debut CD. Is Taufik, 25, worried?
The R&B singer said: "Of course, the best is for fans to support both of us because music can be shared. Ultimately, it's all about who works harder, who has the better formula and people's preferences. Reality TV is a powerful medium, and Hady is current. So my task is to become current again and attract people."
Taufik dismissed the suggestion that Hady is the more popular Idol as he got 70 per cent of the votes compared to Taufik's 68 per cent.
"But my population (of voters) was bigger!" he said cheekily. "So I'm feeling comfortable!"
For Hype Up, he will sing what could be his first single, All Because of You, which he premiered at the Singapore Idol finale, and a mix of old and new numbers.

Hady Mirza (Season 2 Winner)
For Hady, Hype Up falls on a special day - a month after the Singapore Idol finale and on Hari Raya Puasa.
The new Singapore Idol champ was fasting during the finals, which made his victory doubly meanigful.
Hady, 26, said: "It helps me focus more. It's not so difficult because I'd be busy the whole day and I'd forget. And before I know it, it's time to break fast."
At the finale, the soulful crooner only had time to scarf down a sandwich for dinner, but vomitted it out just before his second song Through the Fire due to nerves.
So instead of Hady making Hari Raya visits, will his family members be flocking to the concert to see him instead?
"Can you imagine one section of the Indoor Stadium all in baju kurung? That would be sweet!" said a jubilant Hady, who'll be belting out his first single, You Give Me Wings.
He added that he was not disturbed by Hype Records boss and Singapore Idol judge Ken Lim's finale comments. Fans have complained that Ken was biased towards runner-up Jonathan Leong and questioned Hype's commitment to Hady.
"I understand their concern, but they shouldn't worry. Ken is the guy to trust and he means well. I also felt I could do better. I need all the tips I can get to learn the ropes quickly."

Jonathan Leong
Other than the fact that he's on the verge of nabbing a three-year artiste management contract with Hype Records, the handsome runner-up has nothing new to report.
Except that he'll be attempting a Cantonese song (it's his dialect group, by the way) at the concert. Universal Music hasn't contacted Jonathan, 24, about an album deal yet, but he's not sweating over it.
"If nothing comes my way, there's no point pushing it. Anyway, I'll go back to school in January. That's still my priority," said the final-year NUS undergrad.
And what about modelling? After all, the 1.77m heart-throb worked part-time at Upfront agency.
Embarrassed, Jonatahan good-naturedly confessed he was a flop: "I wasn't very good at it. I didn't earn much money for the agency. I didn't get much work, I didn't have any print ads, nobody cast me. I walked once, but it was my first and last time!"

Sylvester Sim
Some of Sly's underaged fans often wait for him outside new Mandopop club Dragonfly, where he has been performing almost daily this past week.
But the 23-year-old rocker advises them not to because "they can't come in, so no point".
Instead, he'll be seeing his loyal teenage supporters at Hype Up.
His nightclub gigs have been encouraging so far, Sly claimed.
"People drag me on stage when I'm not singing and drag me down to take pictures with them when I am!"
For Hype Up, the bad-boy Idol runner-up will showcase some new stage tricks and play his trademark electric guitar.
In the audience will be his family, including new "member" - girlfriend and Singapore Idol 2 Top 28 also-ran Milly Khoo. Calling her "The One", Sly gushed: "she's very understanding and patient - that's what I need right now."

Olinda Cho
Since coming in third in Idol 2004, the release of Olinda's solo album has been pushed back several times.
The vivacious Olinda compared the long wait to "giving birth".
She quipped: "I've been carrying my 'baby' for two years already!
"I'm just waiting for my water to break, because it's definitely due soon!"
The 26-year-old vocal powerhouse declined to give further details about her album.
She also denied feeling impatient or frustrated at the delay becuase she knows it will happen "sooner or later".
However, the spokesman for slimming brand Royal Body Perfect is excited to make her stage comeback after two years of "being known more as the slimmer than the singer".
There will be a sneak preview of her new material at Hype Up, including her debut single, a cover of Dusty Springfield's You Don't Have to Say You Love Me.
Olinda also hinted that she will sing a duet with "one of the guys".

Jasmine Tye
It's no shocker that the pretty lass has the makings of a spokesmodel.
Jasmine, 18, said she's been fielding several offers - her dream endorsements are for jewellery and skincare brand SK-II - and a local talent management agency has shown interest in signing her up.
But once reminded of her 2kg weight gain during Idol, she looked horrified and whined: "Oh no, you're going to suggest I do a slimming endorsement? Well, if they offer me, I don't mind taking it up."
For the concert, the budding songwriter said she'll be playing an instrument - we're guessing the drums since that's her forte.
Jasmine also assured fans that she'll be more professional on stage compared to her Idol days.
"This is a concert where people buy tickets, so I have to take it more seriously."

Daphne Khoo
She is the only Idol who bats for both sides.
Not only has the 19-year-old kept in touch with the first batch, but her hosting duties on the Internet programme Singapore Idol on Demand required her to befriend the current Idols too.
Not surprisingly, cute, petite Daphne has bonded with the equally "cutey-cutey-cute" pint-sized Jasmine Tye.
"We have a lot in common - we both have eczema, we're both Christians and we grew up with only sisters," she said.
Recently, Daphne - whose other passion is dance - auditioned for Channel 5's new reality TV dance series, The Dance Floor, with five friends, doing hip-hop and funk-jazz.
She said: " I'm definitely worried about people slamming me and saying I'm addicted to reality TV, but this is a good platform."
Daphne will be shaking her booty at the concert with backup dancers and a male partner, describing her act as "wild and not the Daphne you thought you knew".

Paul Twohill
Headbanging to Fall Out Boy's Dance Dance at the Singapore Idol finale was so exciting for crazy Paul, he was thrilled at being called back for Hype Up.
The 17-year-old emo rocker said he'll finally be "screaming" in one of his songs: "Maybe I'll throw in a pole dance and take my shirt off! I've been doing push-ups every two days!"
Paul revealed that he's been offered a hosting gig, but has to wait till his three-month contract with Mediacorp is up.
And what about starring in a Singapore Idol spin-off series a la Shooting Stars?
He joked: "I hope I don't have to do drama because I can't cry for nuts and I can't act angry. I'm only good at comedy."
