'Nishabd' back in the reckoning
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 10, 2007]

Ram Gopal Verma's 'Nishabd' was ready months back. In fact the PR machinery of the film had gone amok in plastering news about the film's lead heroine Jiah Khan all over the town. While all this was happening, there were no signs of the film releasing. Meanwhile RGV released his 'Shiva' and then began work for his pet project 'RGV Ke Sholay'.

It seemed that the film was stuck in the cans but around late November, the first look of 'Nishabd' was out and the film's teaser promos were all over the satellite media. News about Jian Khan and her real life admiration for Amitabh Bachchan continued to make news and all seemed set for the film to be unleashed at the theatres.

Until the film's promotion came to an abrupt stop...!

Suddenly the film's promos were pulled off the telly and it seemed that the film would now release all the way after the World Cup since February anyways seemed overcrowded with number of films trying to edge their way past into the theatres.

Yet again, everything seemed to have come to standstill before one was surprised once again with the film's release being announced as February 23rd. The film's extended promos too are back on satellite channels once again and though it appears to be a slow beginning, it is expected to peak up soon with just a little over a month to go before the film's release.

Meanwhile we continue to keep our ears open about what Jiah has to say about Big B every passing week!

Watch Abhi/Ash on DVD
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 10, 2007]

Coming close to the cinematic release of 'Guru', DVDs/VCDs of 'Umrao Jaan', last film that had Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai as a pair, have hit the stands.

Though the film boasted of some lilting music by Anu Malik and competent performances by both Abhishek and Aishwarya, general lack of interest amongst audience coupled with JP Dutta's lukewarm narrative killed whatever chances the film had at the theatres.

Biggest box office disaster of the year gone by, the film is now trying its luck with the segment of audience who love to watch films while seated on their couches in the comfort of their living rooms.

Hello? Where is Upen Patel in 'Namaste London'?
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 10, 2007]

When Upen Patel was signed for Vipul Shah's 'Namaste London', it made big news for the hot shot newcomer. This was because after '36 China Town', a biggie like this with Akshay Kumar in the lead spelt a good career move en route to consolidation of his position in the world of Bollywood.

Surprisingly Upen is still waiting for his moment of limelight in the publicity of 'Namaste London' even as the film's promos have been on air for around a month. While the publicity kick started with specially crafted Chirstmas promo 'Jingle Balle', it was followed by 'Chakna Chakna', a UK bhangra pop number set in a discotheque!

Ever since then, the only two stars around which the film's publicity is revolving are Akshay and Katrina who made for a decent pair in 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye' last year.

Slated to release on 9th March, there are still a few weeks to go before the film's promotion catches on full steam. During this period, one waits to see when does Upen finally fit into the scheme of things to make his presence felt in the film.

After 'Wo Lamhe', 'Aadat' and 'Tere Bin', Atif tops the charts once again
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 10, 2007]

Name Atif Aslam needs no introduction.

After topping the charts with his superhit tracks like 'Wo Lamhe' [Zeher], 'Aadat' [Kalyug] and 'Tere Bin' [Bas Ek Pal], he finds himself in the limelight once again for his brand new number 'Doorie' which is the opening number of the namesake album.

Released just a few weeks back, the album sits pretty at the top of the charts in the non-film album category and has been making a splash at the music stands. With music and lyrics by Sachin Gupta and some guest composers/lyricists, 'Doorie' is yet another successful venture for Atif who is fast becoming a youth icon for youngsters across the sub-continent.

When somewhat normalcy seemed to be returning to Sanjay Dutt抯 life, he has been held up by a storm once again. His appearance with new love Maanyata at Screen Awards recently earned mug shots in all the newspapers. But a Mumbai based tabloid in a shocking revelation has unearthed in its front page story that the girl is no practicing criminal psychologist as stated earlier.

Instead, she is a C-grade actress whose screen name is Sara Khan. And she also did an item song in Prakash Jha抯 慓angaajal

Jimmy Shergill goes negative in EKLAVYA
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 11, 2007]

For all those who complained that Jimmy Shergill was always seen as Mr. Nice in each of his films, there is a reason to rejoice. This is because the young man has turned negative with vengeance in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's upcoming film 'Eklavya - The Royal Guard'.

Set in contemporary times, the film is about a King [Boman Irani] and his brother [Jackie Shroff]. While Jackie schemes for years to overthrow the King and take his place, Jimmy [Jackie's son] plays a violent man who supports his father in his endeavor.

In addition, he also jealous of Saif Ali Khan [Boman's son] and hates his own status as a minor role.

Looking forward to you in a different garb, Jimmy!

Top-10 Lyricists of the year
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 11, 2007]

These are the men who stay in the background, but it's their work which speaks - literally! Meet the men who wrote some memorable lyrics for the music albums that came in 2006.

1. Sayeed Quadri [Wo Lamhe, Bas Ek Pal, Anwar]
Sayeed Quadri has been around for years. But it was only in year 2006 when he became a household name, well almost, for some priceless gems that he contributed to Hindi film songs scene. With number of back to back superhit songs to his credit throughout the year, he enters 2007 as a lyricist to reckon with when it comes to heartwarming love songs. Watch out for songs as diverse as oh-so-lovely-and-intimate 'Chal Chale Apne Ghar' [Woh Lamhe], cry-of-love 'Tere Bin' [Bas Ek Pal] and ever-so-romantic 'Maula Mere' [Anwar] and you would know why!

2. Gulzar [Omkara, Jaanemann, Guru]
Gulzar saab may have been in news most for his 'Beedi' [Omkara] in the year gone by but one must not forget that he came up with some beautiful songs like 'Ajnabi Shehar' and 'Saud Dard' [Jaan E Mann] that just fell short of being great! This was not all as he united with A.R.Rahman for 'Jaage Hain' in 'Guru' that has undoubtedly turned out to be one of the best songs to have been churned out in 2006. He is one veteran whose craft is becoming popular with audience across generations over the years!

3. Javed Akhtar [KANK, Don, Umrao Jaan]
Not to be left behind in the race of some unforgettable songs, Javed Akhtar saab came up with 'Mitwa' [Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna] that sits at the top when it comes to one of the most popular numbers in past year. This was not all as he reserved one of his best writings for son Farhan when he penned 'Aaj Ki Raat' [Don]. On the face value, the song sounds like just one of those many pre-climax/climax songs but explore it minutely and you could hear an entire story unfold in those few words! And yes, it's a pity that his superb work for 'Umrao Jaan' completely went unnoticed! Have you lend an ear to 'Jhoote Ilzam' yet?

4. Amitabh Verma [Bas Ek Pal, Ankahee]
A relative newcomer, young Amitabh knows how to present poetry to the current audience. He may not be an ultimate wordsmith with the greatest of vocabulary but when it comes to sheer human emotions, he knows how to bring it fore to the 'aam junta'. Hear some under rated but highly effective songs like 'Zindagi Hosh Mein' [Bas Ek Pal] and 'Ek Pal Ke Liye' [Ankahee] and you can't help but give two thumbs up to the stranglehold of Amitabh on tugging at your heart strings!

5. Sameer [Salaam E Ishq, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Baabul, Ankahee]
Mr. Consistent Sameer continued to deliver one chartbuster after another [as he has done in last couple of decades]! While there were innumerous chartbusters to his credit in 2006, the songs where his writing impressed most were 'Dil Kya Kare' [Salaam E Ishq], 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye' [Humko Deewana Kar Gaye], 'Kehta Hai Baabul', 'Baawri Piya Ki'  [Baabul] and 'Ankahee' [Ankahee]. A man capable of so much more than he is actually being recognized for, Sameer knows how to deliver different kind of lyrics for different films.

6. Mayur [Gangster]
Last year he gave us 'Halka Halka Sa Ye Nasha' [Chocolate] and this year he came up with 'Bheegi Bheegi' [Gangster]! The young man certainly knows how to pen a song for a particular situation. In his short career so far, Mayur has been fast making his presence felt. Hit tracks like the one mentioned above only help his cause! Shying away from the routine 'pyaar mohabbat' route, he belongs to the clan of new age lyricists who aspire to make their music and songs different while staying in the parameter of commercial Bollywood cinema.

7. Prasoon Joshi [Fanaa]
Afrer some superb songs for 'Rang De Basanti', the music of which released late 2005, Prasoon Joshi was in form as always for the work he did in 'Fanaa'. He wrote a heartwarming 'Mere Haath Mein' for the film that ignited all around passion with Aamir Khan and Kajol setting the screen on fire. He has been selective with one project at a time but his work is sure to be heard a lot more in the coming months as his stocks have increased manifold in 2006.

8. Irshad Kamil [Ahista Ahista]
Just 2 years in the industry and Irshad Kamil has number of quality songs to his credit. With an impressive lineage of films like 'Chameli', 'Shabd', 'Socha Na Tha' and 'Karam' behind him, Irshad had another reason to smile last year as his songs for 'Ahista Ahista' were well appreciated. Can we hear more of him in the coming months?

9. Mudassar Aziz [Zindaggi Rocks]
Already sitting pretty on the director's hot seat for 'Dulha Mil Gaya' starring none other than Shahrukh Khan and Sushmita Sen, young Mudassar Aziz has been in the industry for just a few years. As a lyricist, his moment of glory came with the work he did for 'Zindaggi Rocks'. 'Humko Choone Paas Aayiye' never fails to seduce and still makes you long for the love that you either have...or lost!

10. Aditya Dhar [Kabul Express]
Just one song and it made one stand up and notice a name - Aditya Dhar. Along with Swartmika Mishra and Vijay Kumar, he came up with 'Banjar', an excellent number reflecting the state of once beautiful Afghanistan, for the film 'Kabul Express'. With Yash Raj Films backing numerous newcomers for their upcoming projects, it would be interesting to see if these three men are heard more in future.

Box Office Analysis
Exclusive by Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 11, 2007]

First weekend performance of latest release

There was absolutely no surprise when 'Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana' came on Friday and opened to miserable houses. A stuck project with minimal publicity and practically zero awareness, the film marks a disastrous beginning to 2007. The film doesn't stand a run beyond one week at the theaters. There was another small time film called 'Game' [starring Sameer Dharmadhikari, Sherlyn Chopra] that released at select theatres but met with a similar fate at the box office on its opening weekend.

Last week's movies

'I See You' came as a dampener at the very end of a highly successful 2006. If the opening was miserable, the following days too didn't see any footfalls to cheer about. Releasing at select theatres across the country, the film couldn't even cross 1 crore mark as it wrapped up its first week at a shade above 75 lakhs. In an age when a solitary B center with decent credentials can generate as much revenue in an opening week, it was highly disappointing to see Arjun Rampal's debut production sinking without a trace.

Both Mumbai and Pune came up with approximate 11.5 lakhs while Delhi couldn't even cross 10 lakhs. One feels sorry for the leading actress Vipasha who was off the press before the film's release and now is hardly talked about due to massive blow taken by the film at the box office.

From the past

'Bhagam Bhag' is the sole movie that is running across India with decent collections to show. After a 21 crore first week, the film took a little less than 50% fall to end at 12 crores. This has proved that the film has held itself well due to sheer appreciation from the paying public. Never mind the critics backlash it got on it's release; just like 'Malamaal Weekly', 'Bhagam Bhag's is yet another audience hit for director Priyadarshan.

Standing at 33 crores, the film is now hit at the box office and marks a positive comeback for Govinda. Meanwhile Akshay Kumar has only consolidated his superstar position with the film doing very good business in A centers like Mumbai [around 2.5 crores] & Delhi [1.25 crores] and even other B and C centers. Suniel Shetty now has reasons to smile since he has first hit to his credit as a producer after the downfall of 'Khel' and 'Rakht'.

With zero competition from the new releases, 'Kabul Express' held on well in the 3rd week by dropping less than 50% from the second week. The film collected around 1.5 crores and has now crossed 11 crores to be categorized as an average success. The film's biggest success zone is Mumbai from where it generated more than 50 lakhs. On the other hand Delhi surprised as it moved up from 3 lakhs to around 7 lakhs. One wonders if the collections revealed from the city last week were accurate and came from all the theatres.

Another surprise that is baffling many is that while Arshad Warsi was clearly the film's lead with John in a supporting role, it is being assumed/termed otherwise in numerous sections of media. Not fair!

With even Salman Khan coming and accepting 'Baabul' to be an all India flop, there is absolutely no debate left about the film's performance at the Indian box office. The film continued to sink to lower depths as it collected just about 65 lakhs in it's 4th week. After barely crossing 17 crores, the film should be only dealing in a few lakhs or so to end below 17.5 crores. A rare failure for a film starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee together in principal roles. The film may just about manage to do well on the satellite medium once it is premiered on the small screen.

Meanwhile 'Dhoom 2' continued to add to its tally with more than 2.5 crores being added to its 80 crore total of last week. At 82 crores, the film should manage to touch 85 crore mark in its final run. In fact the film was most consistent at Mumbai [50 lakhs] and Delhi [45 lakhs] where it slid down just marginally from 65 lakhs and 57 lakhs respectively.

It is 50 days for Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao as their 'Vivah' showed a jump from its 6th week total of 1.5 crore to 1.8 crores. A rare happening in the world of Hindi cinema, especially in today's market. At 25 crores, the film is a Superhit all over the country. Now would that prompt Sooraj Barjatya to continue making family films for his banner or would he be diversifying into different genres? As a film lover, one would want him to opt for the latter and surprise the audience!

In the future

First big release for 2007 comes in the form of 'Guru' and all eyes are set on the film to see if it turns out to be a worthy follow-up to many a superhit films that 2006 has given to audience. Mani Ratnam may not have tasted success at Hindi movies box office but while 'Dil Se' is now almost considered as a classic with re-runs on satellite medium and 'Yuva' being a case study for cinema students, the tables have turned around for the director! This proves that his films were probably way ahead of their times but boasted of high quality nevertheless.

If one looks from sheer commercial point of view, 'Guru' seems to be a much more comfortable box office bet than the two aforementioned films. The delay has only helped in film's publicity picking up in a big way and the star power and hit music should ensure that film takes a good 70-80% opening.

Other release of the week is 'Anwar' and though its postponement from December to January has helped in creating awareness about it, it still is not the kind of film that many would love to flock on the day of its release. The film looks promising with good performances and story telling but a dark/disturbing theme coupled with lack of star factor would go against a safe opening.

"Has Amisha made a record with Khanna 'Khandaan'"?
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 11, 2007]

Has Amisha Patel just made a record and now qualifies to be mentioned in the desi/videsi record books?

Believe it or not but the release of 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.' would mean that Amisha Patel would have worked with the entire Khanna 'khanadaan' led by Vinod Khanna!

This is because in the film she is paired opposite two film old Karan Khanna who has worked in 'Bachke Rehna Re Baba' and 'Yun Hota To Kya Hota' earlier. For starters, Karan Khanna is Vinod Khanna抯 nephew and cousin of Akshaye Khanna and Rahul Khanna.

What is interesting is that she has also worked with Vinod, Akshaye and Rahul Khanna in the years gone by. While she was paired opposite Bobby Deol in 'Kranti', the film also starred Senior Khanna. When it comes to the young ones, she was seen with Akshaye Khanna in 'Humraaz' while 'Elaan' had Rahul paired opposite her.

Can we now revisit the record books please?

'Krrish' editor Amitabh Shukla roped in for 'Namastey London'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 11, 2007]

Just around half a decade in the industry and Amitabh Shukla is already making quite a name for himself in the world of film editing.

With a superhit 'Krrish' behind him in the year gone by, Amitabh's next big film is Vipul Shah's 'Namastey London' which is slated for a March 09 release. While Akshay Kumar is known for his unofficial editing prowess, Amitabh certainly has a task in hand to look at what works best for the film.

In fact this Friday's release 'Anwar' too has Amitabh using his scissors. He has also been entrusted with the responsibility of editing 'Chak De India' which releases later this year.

Starting his career as an editor with 'Chalte Chalte', Amitabh has worked on number of reputed projects like 'Paheli', 'Bluffmaster' and 'Kabul Express'.

Adlabs to distribute Black Friday; release on Feb 9th
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 12, 2007]

Adlabs today announced acquisition of worldwide distribution rights of the critically-acclaimed docu-drama, Black Friday which is based on the events leading up to and the investigation thereafter of the 1993 Bombay bomb blasts. Black Friday is presented by Mid-Day Multimedia Limited and Adlabs will be releasing the film nationwide and overseas on 9th February 2007.

The film was banned two years ago by the Bombay High Court despite having a censor certificate. A petition filed by a group of the 1993 bomb blasts accused had challenged the release of the film until the special TADA court delivered its judgment on the bomb blasts case. The judgment was delivered on 12th September 2006 and 100 of the 123 accused, including four members of prime accused Tiger Memon抯 family, were convicted.

The 1993 Bombay blasts left 257 dead and 1400 injured and brought into the spotlight the mafia-terrorist nexus prevalent today. Based on S. Hussain Zaidi抯 book on the same subject, the film takes one into the heart of the conspiracy behind the Bombay blasts and the massive follow-up investigation by giving detailed account of planning, execution and back-end operations of the same. Produced by Arindam Mitra and directed by Anurag Kashyap, the film features the stellar acting talents of Kay Kay Menon, Pavan Malhotra and Aditya Srivastava playing Inspector Rakesh Maria, Tiger Memon and police informer 態adshah Khan

After a 'run'away success, Priyan now beats a 'Dhol'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 12, 2007]

Priyadarshan has enjoyed yet another runaway success in the form of 'Bhagam Bhag' which has reached the HIT mark within 2 weeks of its release. And now he has all the reasons to smile, sing, dance and beat the 'dhol'....well, literally!

He is now gearing up to finish the shoot of his next film 'Dhol' which is yet another comic fare from the director who has been delivering back to back hits at the box office.

This time around he doesn't have a Akshay Kumar or a Paresh Rawal as his trump card. Instead, 'Dhol' stars young blood like Sharman Joshi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Khemu and Tanushree Datta who are supported by Om Puri and now-regular-with-Priyan Rajpal Yadav. This is not all as the film also features Arbaaz Khan [another regular] and Payal Rohatgi in important roles.

With music by Pritam (who has also composed for Priyan in 'Garam Masala' and 'Bhagam Bhag'), this film by Percept Picture Company is aiming for a June release.
