Webber elimination a team error, says Horner
Christian Horner has said that Mark Webber’s early qualifying knock-out in China on Saturday was due to a team decision rather than a personal call from the driver. On what was statistically his worst Saturday since Bahrain 2009, the Australian – using Hard tyres and without the use of KERS - managed no more than 18th place.
“We thought there would be enough performance to do it on the Prime (Hard tyre compound) - it suggested this morning that he should be able to on the Prime,” Team Principal Horner explained to BBC Sport.
“Obviously it’s very easy with hindsight, but obviously that was a mistake. It was the team’s call because it looked like another set of Primes would be enough to comfortably make it through.
“But with the tyres not being up to temperature it’s obviously compromised him. He’s obviously had rotten lucky this weekend but I’m sure he’ll race very well from there.” |

Mark Webber, arguably the most outspoken driver in F1, has refused to heap scorn on his team after dropping out in Q1 in China.
The Aussie qualified down in 18th place for the Shanghai race as he team did not send him out on the soft option tyres despite him being in danger of being knocked out.
But, instead of lambasting the team for the decision, Webber appears to have taken it in his stride.
"When any top team goes out in Q1 we can all put the hindsight goggles on go yeah, we should have done this. In the end for sure options would have made life easier, that's completely obvious," he said.
"We could have made that decision, but we didn't, as a team.
"We all thought we were going to get enough laps in on the prime to get the two timed in, but we were a bit late going out, and they were the wrong tyre as well.
"The timing was the problem, not the tyre."
But it wasn't only in qualifying that Webber ran into problems as he also suffered an electrical issue during the final practice, which meant he went into qualifying with just five laps under his belt on Saturday - and only one of those was a flying lap.
"One lap in P3, that doesn't help. We were a little bit on the back foot.
"Obviously the guys did a phenomenal job, we just got the car together minutes before qualifying.
"We went out and my first run was probably half a second shy of where we needed to be, with obviously KERS as well added on top of that.
"We were on the bubble and decided to go for another run on the prime to have a few laps on it, but we never got out quick enough, so we only had one timed lap, and added to that the tyres weren't up to temp. So that second set was a bit more difficult to get the job done.
"I was pretty cool with it, but obviously we all started to panic a bit at the end when we knew we weren't going to get in two laps. The tyre should have been enough, but on one lap it wasn't enough.
"That's where we got squeezed. We snookered ourselves really." |

Vettel 'never expected Red Bull to dominate'
Sebastian Vettel denies that McLaren’s victory in the Chinese Grand Prix was a “wake-up call” – insisting he never imagined Red Bull Racing would dominate the season and always expected tough competition.
Red Bull’s decision to treat the Shanghai race as a two-stop endurance race rather than a three-stop sprint made the crucial difference in enabling Lewis Hamilton to end Vettel’s winning streak.
As the Formula 1 fraternity reconvened in Turkey on Thursday, Vettel admitted Red Bull had been outwitted in China and could not blame bad luck.
“Lewis and McLaren didn't win because they were lucky,” he acknowledged. “They did a good job and gave us a hard time in the race and they fully deserved to win because they did a better job than we did.
“I don't think our decisions were down to luck and [nor] were theirs. You have these races and it's important to learn from those things and make sure you don't do the same mistake twice.”
However, Vettel added: “It’s easy to sit here now in hindsight and say the three-stop [strategy] was quicker than the two-stop in China.
“All in all we had a very good and competitive car that weekend. Surely the result was not perfect, but not everything went according to plan, so I think we can be happy with the points we could take away.”
And he said he was less surprised at being beaten than those members of the media who had predicted a season-long Red Bull rout and written off everyone else’s chances.
“I wouldn't say it was a wake-up call,” said Vettel. “Maybe for people already asking some weird questions in race two of the season about being dominant.
“But I always try to explain my point of view – maybe it's a lesson for the people asking these sorts of questions and saying that this is total dominance and others will have no chance, which I always said was wrong.
“Maybe it's a lesson for them to see that obviously we didn't have a perfect Sunday. You make a small mistake or something goes a little bit wrong and someone will beat you.
“Nobody is unbeatable and there will always be a time when you will find somebody kicking your ass.”
Despite the increased importance of tyre preservation this season and the greater variety of strategies that teams are employing – such as saving tyres in qualifying to have a larger number of fresh sets for the race – Vettel says starting at the front of the grid remains an overriding aim.
“I think if you have a chance you should always go for pole position,” he said.
“I still think starting from the front is where you want to be. Obviously if you start from behind there is always a lot of risk involved and everything needs to go the right way.
“If you stop moving forward at any stage and get blocked behind a car, your strategy doesn't work any more.
“Some people say, maybe it’s better to look after your tyres and start 11th or whatever. But I don't think that's the way. If your target is to have fun you should start from the back, but if your target is to win you would always like to start from the front.” |
