Lotus to run Malaysian teenager
Sat, 07 Aug 12:30:29 2010

Lotus has announced that 16-year-old Nabil Jeffri, a Malaysian karting prodigy currently competing in Formula BMW Pacific, will take part in an aero test with the team next month.

The announcement comes with Jeffri having signed up a part of the driver development programme Lotus put in place having secured an entry for the 2011 F1 season.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to drive for Lotus Racing in the aero test,” Jeffri said. “It’s a big privilege to gain driving experience with the most promising new F1 team.

“Driving the Lotus Racing car will definitely be a priceless exposure to the F1 driving experience, and I’m looking forward to many more similar opportunities to arise as a result of being part of the AirAsia Driver Development program.”

Lotus Racing Team Principal Tony Fernandes said he was delighted to give the youngster an opportunity to sample F1 machinery for the first time.

“It’s an exciting day for all of us in the Lotus Racing team – being able to give bright young talent like Nabil the chance to play an integral role in the development of our team is a recognition of his burgeoning talent, and shows that there is a clear route to the top rung of the motorsport ladder, no matter how old you are or where you are racing,” he said.

“I’m sure that before he gets in the hot seat he’ll be speaking to Fairuz Fauzy for some advice – Fairuz is another Malaysian sports star who, as our third driver, is showing at tracks around the world that you can reach the top if you work hard to achieve your dreams – together, they serve as inspirations to everyone in our team, and to young talent all over the world.”

The exact date and location of the test hasn’t been revealed.

VASSER, SATO, MOWLEM PUT EVORA CUP GT4 PROTOTYPE THROUGH PACES AT LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY

MONTEREY, CA -- AUGUST 11, 2010 -- Jimmy Vasser and Takuma Sato took the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the new Lotus Evora Cup GT4 prototype at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California.

Sato and Vasser joined Johnny Mowlem to support Lotus' various activities in the days leading up to the Pebble Beach Concurs d' Elegance. Mowlem, the official factory test driver for the Evora Cup GT4 program, provided Sato and Vasser some insight into the performance capabilities of the car prior to them taking to the track. .

Developed from the highly acclaimed Lotus Evora sports car, the Lotus Evora Gup GT4 race car has been engineered to give drivers a competitive racing package straight out of the box. Lotus Motorsport has developed the Evora Cup GT4 in conjunction with a number of prestigious technical partner using the Evora's world class chassis as its base. Further development of the vehicles steering, brakes and suspension system delivers exceptional grip and handling capabilities on track. Cosworth are supplying a naturally-aspirated V6 race engine and full Electronics Systems which delivers 445Nm of torque at 5500 rpm powering the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox, with a paddle shift option. With FIA designed and approved safety features, the Evora Cup GT4 is accepted in over 12 of the world's leading GT series and can be easily modified for the demand of endurance events.

Vasser, one of the most respected names in United States open-wheel racing, is the 1996 IndyCar Champion and co-owner of KV Racing Technology. After driving several laps in the Evora Cup GT4, he said, "First of all it is a beautiful car. It looks aggressive and you can drive it with confidence. I think Lotus has done a fantastic job kitting it out. It's got all the modern amenities you would expect, and it is a lot of fun to drive."

Sato, who spent seven seasons in Formula One and currently competes in the IndyCar Series behind the wheel of the #5 Lotus -- KV Racing Technology entry, was ecstatic about his first laps ever in a GT car saying, "Driving the Lotus Evora Cup GT4 was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed it. I have never driven a GT car before so this was just outstanding. The car sounds great, the power pulled really nicely, the handling was good. It has great braking stability so you can really dive into the corners. It is a car that gives the driver confidence he can go really deep into the corner before braking. This is a car you can learn and attack the lap time with. It is a driver friendly car."

Lotus Motorsport is targeting the Nurburgring (Germany)round of the European GT4 championship, the weekend of August 28-29, for the debut of the Lotus Evora Cup GT4. The driver line-up will be announced when the entry is confirmed.

Youngest ever F1 tester drives Lotus

Malaysia’s Nabil Jeffri made history on Wednesday afternoon by becoming the youngest ever person to drive a Formula 1 car, as the 16-year-old piloted the Lotus in a straight-line aerodynamic test at Duxford’s Imperial War Museum in Cambridgeshire.

Although in-season testing on circuits remains strictly forbidden for all teams, F1 outfits are allowed a limited number of straight-line runs.

Supported by regular Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen plus reserve Fairuz Fauzy as the team was entertained by a War World II Spitfire plane, Nabil – a member of AirAsia’s ASEAN Driver Development programme – not only drove the Cosworth-powered T127 but also completed a pit-stop practice.

“I have had an incredible day, one of the best days of my life, and I want to thank Lotus Racing, (Team Principal) Tony Fernandes and (Chief Technical Officer) Mike Gascoyne for giving me the chance to drive their car,” he said afterwards.

“I have to admit that the first time I went out it was pretty scary – everyone told me the acceleration would be unbelievable and the braking would be so much greater than anything I’ve ever experienced, and it took a while to get used to that, but Heikki and Fairuz gave me some advice on how to settle in to it and after a while I was more comfortable and was able to get through the day’s plan.

“It’s such an honour to have had this opportunity, and it’ll be a long time before the excitement wears off, but I’ll keep on working hard to one day join Heikki, Fairuz, Jarno (Trulli) and the rest of the F1 grid; and with the support of people like Tony and Lotus Racing, I’ve got a great chance of doing so.”

Cosworth confirms Lotus split as 2011 Renault engine deal rumours intensify
12 September 2010 by Keith Collantine

Cosworth has announced it will not supply engines to Lotus in 2011.

The engine supplier released a statement saying:

Cosworth has reached an agreement in principle with Lotus Racing whereby the team’s Cosworth engine supply agreement will come to a conclusion at the end of the current Formula One season. This agreement is subject to contract and until the agreement is signed, neither party will be making any further comment.

Lotus are believed to be chasing a Renault engine supply for 2011.

Team principal Tony Fernandes expressed frustration at suffering another gearbox failure during today’s Italian Grand Prix. This is believed to be the key motivating factor behind the change of engine which will also come with a supply of gearboxes.

But he was keen to stress his satisfaction with Cosworth’s engines when he posted the following on Twitter today:

Jarno has some gear issues. Boy I hate this gearbox. [...] It’s such a shame on gearbox and back of engine. Cosworth is a good engine. [...] Jarno retired gearbox. Oh well. Making decisions easier.

Lotus: Exciting announcements coming in Singapore..
Lotus Team Principal Tony Fernandes has revealed that some ‘very exciting announcements’ are set to be made at the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix as the Norfolk-based outfit continues to make preparations towards 2011.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Lotus would be parting company with 2010 engine supplier Cosworth at the end of the season, therefore ending the contract two years early; paddock gossip now states that a Renault deal is in the pipeline.

“Singapore is going to be amazing, for me and the whole team,” said Malaysian Fernandes. “We’ll be making a couple of very exciting announcements over the race weekend, so it’ll be good for us on and off-track.”

“On a purely visual level, it will be very cool to see our cars under the lights and I think that green and yellow paint scheme, with the white flashes running along the cars, will look amazing on-track – it’s something the fans will love.

“They also need to keep an eye on the skies, as the pictures of one of our AirAsia planes in Lotus Racing colours have appeared on the internet. I was sent a few pictures of it by Twitter and, while that is obviously very cool, it means even more to me that that plane will be taking the team back home to Malaysia after the race and that they will be taking a bit of time off between Singapore and Japan in our other home.”

Team Airasia among GP2 entries for 2011-13
Wed, 22 Sep 09:19:00 2010

There are two new teams among the 13 which will compete in the GP2 Series for the next three years.

Organisers announced that 11 of those who competed in the last three-year cycle have been reselected alongside new entrants Carlin and Team Air Asia.

British squad Carlin have just completed the inaugural GP3 Series season, finishing fifth in the teams' standings, while Team Air Asia is an ambitious Malaysian squad strongly linked to Lotus in parent series Formula One.

All 13 teams will compete in both GP2 Asia Series and GP2 Series until 2013.

"We have known and observed Carlin for a long time," said GP2 chief Bruno Michel.

"We signed them in GP3 Series and we have been very pleased not with only their results, which included two podiums and one pole position, but also with the way they integrated into our working environment.

"To have them enter GP2 is the logical next step.

"As for Team Air Asia, it is a new team built on a strong relationship with a current Formula One team presided (over) by Tony Fernandes.

"The seriousness of their presentation, their ambition and their worldwide project were really appealing and in line with what we expect from all our teams. We are very happy to welcome an Asian team to our paddock."

Michel added that the existing line-up of teams looked healthy, with 11 of 12 retained.

"We have developed very strong links and a healthy relationship with our teams over the course of the past three years, but when it was time to make decisions, we based them on sporting results," he said.

"Our wish was to open our grid to new teams and also return to the original number of 13 entries."

The list of teams for seasons 2012-13:

Arden International (NED)

ART Grand Prix (FRA)

Barwa Addax Team (ESP)

Dams (FRA)

iSport International (GBR)

Ocean Racing Technology (POR)
