[Have You Visited the Marina Barrage? Singapore抯 Latest Downtown IconPosted by Sally
November 18, 2008

Marina Barrage is considered Singapore抯 latest downtown icon, built across the mouth of the Marina Channel (map). The Marina Barrage is the first reservoir in the heart of the city, 15th in Singapore.
With a catchment area of 10,000 hectares, or 1/6 the size of Singapore, the Marina catchment is the island抯 largest and most urbanised catchment.

The Marina Barrage is a 350-meter wide dam built across the Marina Channel to keep out seawater. Marina Reservoir combines with the future Punggol and Serangoon reservoirs will increase Singapore抯 water catchment areas from half to two-thirds of Singapore抯 land areas. As one of the pillars of local water supply, Marina Reservoir will meet more than 10% of Singapore抯 current water demand.
The Marina Barrage is part of a comprehensive flood control scheme to alleviate flooding in the low-lying areas in the city such as Chinatown, Boat Quay, Jalan Besar and Geylang.
As the water in the Marina Basin is unaffected by the tides, its water level will be kept constant all year round. This is ideal for all kinds of recreational activities such as boating, windsurfing, kayaking and dragonboating etc at Marina Barrage.
Marina Barrage Tour
This colossal architectural masterpiece is a must-visit. Take a stroll through the barrage抯 vast compounds and come face to face with stunning engineering equipment. Visit the intriguing gallery and discover how the Marina barrage ingeniously prevents flooding to the city抯 low-lying areas. Or simply stand atop the green roof to take in the sweeping Singapore city skyline.
Marina Barrage Opening Hours: All day
Sustainable Singapore Gallery: Mon - Fri: 9am - 6pm (Closed on Tue), Sat, Sun & Public Holidays: 10am - 8pm

  • Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays: 9.30am- 8.30pm
Pick up Point from MRT Station: Near Handicap Pick-up point (Go straight, turn right)
