Deputy Minister Urges Local Leaders To Safeguard Their Roles

Tutong - The roles, duties and responsibilities of Penghulus and heads of villages are full of challenges. The job is not easy to carry out as it encompasses not only villages, mukims and community affairs but also social welfare, safety, culture, peace, economy and many more.

This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Orang Kaya Dewa Pahlawan Dato Paduka Awg Hj Dani bin Hj Ibrahim, who was the guest of honour at the appointment certificate presentation ceremony for the new Penghulu of Mukim Tanjong Maya, Tutong, yesterday.

In a ceremony held at his residence in Kampong Maranti, the new Penghulu, Hj Abd Wahab bin Apong, was presented with the certificate of appointment by the guest of honour. Hj Abd Wahab then read his pledge and made it official by signing on the pledge. The ceremony was witnessed by residents of the mukim, fellow Penghulus as well as senior government officers.

The Deputy Minister in his speech said the Ministry of Home Affairs through the District Offices is continuously working towards ensuring that the candidates for Penghulu and heads of villages passes the appropriate character, experience and knowledge in making sure that their duties and responsibilities are carried out. Pehin Dato Hj Dani also urged the Penghulus and village heads to continually raise their morale, commitment, dedication, patience, diligence and perseverance in carrying out their duty and to look back and understand the roles, duties and responsibilities as stated in the 1998 Penghulu Mukim and Village Head Services Scheme to ensure that they've done their job.

Meanwhile, the Acting Tutong District Officer, Hj Jamain bin Momin said the ceremony was held in the hope that it would raise the development, advancement, peace and prosperity of Mukim Tanjong Maya.

Prince Attends Daughter's Graduation

Bandar Seri Begawan - His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah and Pengiran Bini Hjh Faizah yesterday attended the ISB Year Six Graduation Ceremony for 2007 and certificate presentation at the ISB in Berakas.

A total of 65 students in Year 6 received their certificates after the completion of their studies in Year 6 for 2007. Among those who received the certificate was the daughter of HRH Prince Sufri Bolkiah, YAM Pengiran Anak `Aliiyah Amalul Bulqiah. The Primary School Principal, Mr Shane Nathan, presented the certificates.

Also present at the graduation and certificate presentation were the Australian High Commissioner, Dr Ruth Adler, teachers, students, parents and other guests.

A welcoming speech was delivered by the guest speaker, Dr Ruth Adler, who paid tribute to the work of Mr Taylor, Mr Nathan and the team of Primary School teachers for the excellent job they had done during the children's journey through primary school.

She congratulated all of the Year 6 students for completing primary school, saying that this was a significant achievement and an important milestone in their lives.

Her speech was followed by a speech by Primary Principal, Mr Shane Nathan who recalled that some of the graduates were very excited on their first day at school and couldn't wait to get into the classroom, sometimes, perhaps even forgetting to say goodbye or have time for a farewell kiss.

He said, "They have experienced at least seven different class teachers, countless specialist teachers, a myriad of classroom assistants and support workers, all of whom have contributed to their development. Sometimes, as we all realise, this development is more rapid in some years than others and I am sure that all of the graduates have their favourite memories of teachers and helpers, based on a range of factors".

He noted that "during their time in primary, they have been exposed to a wide range of opportunities and as in life, we get from it, experiences that commensurate with the effort we, ourselves, are willing to make". -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

KNK: Get to know our own country

The aggressive promotion of domestic tourism is expected to result in a reduction of outflow of foreign exchange, and at the same time encourage the public to use the services of local professional tourism service providers to enjoy out-of-the-ordinary activities and visit 'off the beaten track' attractions that Brunei has to offer.
This may lead to the creation of employment opportunities, improve the business outlook for tourism SMEs, help in developing new tourism products and services and pave the way for making Brunei a more attractive destination for international tourism. Sheikh Jamaluddin bin Sheikh Mohamed, in his capacity as the Director of Brunei Tourism, stressed the importance of the role played by the Bruneians and local residents in promoting Brunei and upkeeping its reputation as a hospitable getaway for foreigners. However, before they can execute their role in promoting the nation, citizens and local residents will have to be enlightened on the various places of interests that Brunei has to offer, added Sheikh Jamaluddin. He also emphasised that tourism in Brunei is different in that it focuses on culture and heritage, tranquility and nature, for which Brunei is renowned for. Liable for the international promotion and marketing of Brunei as a tourism destination of choice, Brunei Tourism or The Tourism Development Department under the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, proceeded with its domestic awareness creation campaign dubbed 'Kenali Negara Kitani' (KNK) or 'Get to Know Our Own Country'. The campaign serves to highlight to the general public, officials, students and associations the importance of the tourism industry as a key driver for the country's economic diversification plans, as an employment generator and as a desirable career choice with bright future prospects. It is also a call to action for Bruneians and local residents to explore and discover the wonders of Brunei during weekends and holidays, to engage in more sporting and leisure activities, sample regional delicacies and to purchase more local products and crafts. In addition to private sector companies in the tourism line, such as hotels and tour operators, individual kampongs with special places of interest, activities, scenic spots, food specialties, handicrafts or other attractions of interests to tourists are also invited to sign on as 'KNK Partners' if they want to contribute in the development of domestic tourism activities. Both tourism industry and kampong level 'KNK Partners' will then be encouraged to develop mutually beneficial business arrangements to drive demand for domestic tourism products across the country, which will be supported by Brunei Tourism's year-long KNK marketing campaign. With some 25 tourism industry players having signed on as 'KNK Partners' already, the campaign gathers its momentum and with that, Brunei Tourism will now be conducting presentations explaining the KNK campaign concept to government departments and ministries, where it will be presented and explained to various Heads of Departments and other government officers and officials. During these presentations, feedback will be gathered from the various departments on their suggestions regarding the campaign as well as the way in which they can contribute to the campaign's success and to the development of the tourism industry in general. The first presentation was held yesterday at the Civil Service Institute in Rimba for the Prime Minister's Department. The presentation for other ministries and government departments will be held at a later date. It will also be conducted by Brunei Tourism management and staff in secondary schools, vocational schools, institutions of higher learning, associations and other relevant organizations as well as at districts and mukims. The scope of the KNK campaign, which will be an ongoing effort over the next three years, is to reach all Bruneian residents in both their personal and official capacity that not only the tourism industry has a great importance as an economic activity for Brunei, but that enjoying tourism activities in the country is a worthy and interesting proposition.

On A Mission, Come What May

Kuala Belait - The Acting Minister of Education, senior officers from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs braved flooded roads and used boats to tour a rural school in the Belait District yesterday.
The mission was to take a closer look at Kg Sukang Primary School after the officials witness an Islamic conversion ceremony.
The Acting Minister of Education, Pg Data Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad, yesterday first witnessed the conversion ceremony for a family of seven in Kuala Rawai in Mukim Sukang in the rural area of the Belait District.
Cikgu Bandang Anak Igol, the teacher at Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Primary School in Belait, his wife and children embraced Islam yesterday. It began with the reading of AlFatihah followed by the conversion ceremony and the presentation of souvenirs to the new converts.
Cikgu Bandang is now known as Cikgu Abdul Alim bin Abdullah Igol while her wife, Rosni bte Biju is now called Nur Ruzanna bte Abdullah Biju. A 'Marhaban' recitation and the sprinkling of scented flowers later followed.
The third battalion of the Royal Brunei Land Forces gave assistance with 25 personnel to traverse in the area and about 15 camps were erected for the conversion ceremony for the comfort of invited guests.
Pg Hj Yunus-bin Pg Hj Mohd Salleh, Belait Religious Head in his welcoming speech said based on the statistics from Belait Propagation Unit, 42 new converts have embraced Islam from January 2007 till today in the Belait District.
He said the Ministry of Religious Affairs would take care and develop new converts in Mukim Sukang in particular and in Brunei Darussalam as a whole, especially in giving shelter, guidance and upgrade their knowledge on Islam.
He also said that the development of Islam in Mukim Sukang grew from year to year as a result of the dedication made by the propagators in an effort to spread the teachings of Islam.
They travelled to this rural area by all means, via river, land or air and faced various challenges, obstacles and danger. Until today, Out of 550 people residing in the area, over 60% of the residents in Mukim Sukang have embraced Islam.
Facts revealed that the first conversion was made in 1940 and the first convert was Awg Abdullah bin Duraman @Bundit Bin Duraman. The village chief of Mukim Sukang, Awg Muhamad Simpok bin Datu Maharaja Setia Dian converted Islam on 26th December, 2001 in the presence of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Long Queues At Border Posts This Holiday

Bandar Seri Begawan - The numbers of vehicles, which formed massive queues across both Kuala Lurah and Tedungan Control Post checkpoints, are expected to decrease to more normal levels when the second term of the school year resumes on Monday.
The main factors that contributed to the situation are due to the increasing numbers of travellers from Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak travelling by land to visit their respective destinations for holidays and other related businesses.
For Bruneian travellers, the school holidays are among the best times to bring their family members on trips. And one of the most popular destinations is Sabah (also known as the "Land below the Wind"), which is easily accessible by road.
Sabah offers various types of interesting activities to visiting tourists, and this is more apparent now, with the advent of Visit Malaysia Year 2007.
Travelling by car can be fun and exciting, as travellers have the freedom to move around without many restrictions to their chosen travel routes and destinations.
However, the excitement of long trips can become a burden for most travellers when trapped in small vehicles for several hours at long queues, especially at the border posts. Most of the time, the problems usually occur at the borders of Kuala Lurah, mainly due to the current construction of the permanent QIC (Quarantine, Immigration and Customs) building.
Conditions worsen when a few uncivil motorists try to cut the queue, annoying other motorists who have been trapped in the queue for several hours, causing a bottleneck situation.
However, the quick actions of police personnel who ensure that these situations rarely happen should be applauded. Man Pleads Guilty To Theft Charges

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Local Bruneian aged 23 was sentenced to jail for six months after pleading guilty to charges of theft before the Bandar Magistrate's Court Thursday.
The defendant, Mohamad Fauzan bin OKK Hj Md Yunos, is employed as a security guard by Koperasi Rimbun Sdn Bhd based in Jaya Hypennart Gadong. He faced two charges of theft in a building.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Hjh Najwa Hj Abd Majid told in court that the defendant had hid himself behind the racks inside SupaSave, Jalan Beribi on the night of June 2, just before the shop closed. Soon, all the employees left for home and locked up the shop behind them. That was when the defendant came out of his hiding place and looked around to check if there was anyone left.
He entered into Liew Siew Kam Enterprise within the building and from the table drawer of the shop he took 68 Easi cards, 95 B. mobile cards and $400 in cash. After that, he entered Rul Wei Lis Photoshop also inside the building and forced open a table drawer inside the shop with a screwdriver he had brought along. He took 26 B. mobile cards, 82 Easi cards, 20 JTB NetKads, 9 Payless cards and one Hallo card from the shop.
The court further heard from the prosecution that the defendant tried to find his way out of the building when he found an emergency exit and took a spare key from the alarm system box. He effortlessly made his way out and left for home.
Police investigations also found that on the way home, the defendant threw a ski-mask, a pair of gloves and a torch into the river near his home at Kg Bolkiah `A'. The defendant had used the disposed items to aid him in committing the offences. He was arrested at his home on June 19 following a report lodged to the police by the shop owners.
More than half of the stolen items were recovered by the police, however, the rest of the items were sold and the proceeds were used for his personal purposes. Mohamad Fauzan is a first-time offender.

No To 'Rojak' Language

Bandar Seri Begawan - It has become be a fad among the youth to coin words with a mixture of Malay and another language.

Even some of the learned don't follow the proper usage of Malay, which over the years has led to the language being eroded.

Yesterday, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports lamented over the usage of what he called "a rojak language" and called on authorities to implement and monitor the use of proper Malay language. He called for firm steps to be taken to stop the practise of such polluted language and save the dignity of the Malay language as the country's official language.

"Nowadays, the usage of 'rojak' language among the generation of teenagers has become the norm. They do not speak proper Malay among their peers and even while speaking with their parents," he said.

Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Awg Mohammad bin Haji Daud, spoke at

the 'Mari Bercerita' or National Level Story Telling Competition 2007 at the De_ wan Raya Radio Television Brunei. Defining `rojak language' as a mix of languages involving the mother tongue with a second language, usually English, the minister said such spoken language only pollutes our mother tongue.

"We know that language, community and culture are always evolving with the time," said the minister. Conversing in 'rojak' language is now regarded by society as modem and advanced without realising that it is tearing apart the very fabric of our values and culture, he added.

"Where is our character as Malays if we ourselves do not take the example of other societies that use the language properly?" the minister asked.

"What is more disappointing is that there are some electronic media, whether they realise it or not, that seem to be encouraging its_ usage especially when giving out information, interviews and conversing with listeners," the minister added.

The minister announced the construction of two more libraries in Perpindahan Kampung Lambak Kanan and Kampung Sengkurong. These community libraries, he hoped, can increase the level of reading among children to generate a society that is knowledgeable and advanced in all fields of life.

The ministry will continue to make efforts towards stimulating the minds of the youth to be active, smart and maintain good manners. On the competition, the minister said, it is an annual project of the Language and Literature Bureau and, in his view, is one of the efforts to open the minds of children to explore knowledge through reading. "Through understanding of their reading and story telling, they can interact creatively.

Agro-Tech Park To Support Premium Halal Brand Drive

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Government of Brunei Darussalam's commitment to the development of the Brunei Premium Halal Brand can be gauged by the fact that the country has provided an area of 263 hectares, which is currently being developed as Agro-Technological Park for investments within the country.

The park will support activities under the Brunei Premium Halal Brand such as providing sites for research activities and support services, including development of industries through joint venture and foreign direct investment.

A "Halal Science Centre" will also be established in the park.

Brunei Premium Halal Brand is a project initiated by the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources with the cooperation of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council, Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ministry of Health.

With the development of Brunei Premium Halal Brand, Brunei has set its sights on becoming one of the major players of the Halal brand globally, both in terms of Halal food production and certification, with the sheer aim of catering Halal food including other Halal products of premium quality for Muslim populations worldwide.

The credibility of Brunei Premium Halal Certification will bring confidence and trust to not only Muslims worldwide but also can assure the non-Muslim market about the cleanliness and quality aspect of products after they undergo highly strict procedures under the certification process.

The Brunei Premium Halal Brand will basically act as a passport for businesses to penetrate into the lucrative global Halal industry, which has an estimated value of US$560 billion.

To promote Brunei Premium Halal Brand, Brunei Darussalam will be hosting the 2nd International Halal Product Expo and Conference 2007 from August 1619.

Belait Holds Biggest Charity Carnival

Kuala Belait - Belait District Officer Awg Hj Mohamad bin Hj Abd Rahman said the two-day Belait District charity carnival, which ended yesterday, aimed to raise funds for Belait orphans and His Majesty's 61st birthday.

He encouraged residents to contribute to the Belait District Welfare Fund. He told them to come and 慶arry out charitable acts while donating' (Menderma sambil beramal).

He launched Belait's biggest charity carnival at Jalan Maulana with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday afternoon. Over 60 booths were involved including RTB, Telbru and Hyundai Setia Motors Sdn Bhd.

The winner of the grand prize, a Hyundai Getz, other winners of major prizes and winners for the 60's and 70's singing competition organised by Nasional FM and Harmoni FM of Radio Brunei in conjunction with RTB's 50th anniversary celebration, were announced.

There were sport events and a colouring competition for children aged six to 10 years and 11-12 years old.

Quiz competition participants paid a $20 registration fee to get quiz questionnaires and be eligible to win prizes. Proceeds would be fully donated to the Belait orphanage and His Majesty's birthday funds.

The charity carnival was organised in collaboration with the Belait District Office and Kampong Pandan `A' Consultative Council.

Various cultural and singing performances as well as entertainment for children enlivened the carnival.

Minister Lauds Close Brunei-France Ties

Bandar Seri Begawan- Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Hj Osman, Minister of Health, lauded the close ties that Brunei and France enjoy.

Speaking during the French Bruneian Business Association (FBBA) Annual Dinner and Get Together 2007, he said: `Brunei and France relations are excellent and the potentials for them to be stronger are there.

"It is hoped that the leadership change in France will further increase the dynamics of our relations, and there will be opportunities in the near future for leaders of both countries to meet. I wish there is more that the French Bruneian Business Association can do to bring about people to people contact, to build better understanding between the people, of our cultures and our religion.

"Events of the past years, both in France and Europe in general and in the Islamic world, show that there is still much works to be done to make us better understand one another. I think we all have a role to play.

"We must encourage more exchanges of people, more visits, we like to see more French tourists in Brunei, and we should encourage Bruneians to go to France too, for study, training, sightseeing, visiting the museums, art galleries, etc.

"We hear France's healthcare system is second to none," said the minister.

Speaking of health care he said, "We want people to look after their own health by adopting a healthy lifestyle, so that they can stay healthy all the time.

"Eating balanced meals, regular exercise, and regular medical check up can help us monitor our own health.

"In terms of collaboration with France on various areas, there is already an on-going discussion between UBD and French University Montpellier for research studies into the flora found in the jungles of Brunei for therapeutic and medicinal value. We hope we will also explore other possibilities for further collaboration."

In another speech, Mr Pierre Imhof, FBBA president, said " we have reached another milestone this year with the participation of some 170 guests in the annual dinner, as compared to 150 in last year.

"Members are growing fast with already 70 members, including honorary and permanent members.

Tutong - A Couple was found dead yesterday just outside their house in Telisai Tutong.

The deceased, both locals, were husband and wife. The man was in his 40's while the woman in her 30s.
The bodies were reportedly found by a family member, who raised the alarm, at around 2pm. The body of the man was reportedly found near the doorstep and the woman a few metres away.

When the Bulletin arrived at the scene late in the evening, the police had cordoned off the area.

The daughter of the man said, "I only found out about the deaths late this afternoon. I am in shock as I didn't expect this to happen. I rushed here as fast as possible."

The daughter, who was in tears as she spoke to the media, goes to a college in the capital.

"I arrived late and do not know what happened," she added.  

Meanwhile, the father of the dead man said, "I received a call from one of my children at around 3pm about the incident. He was the eldest son of seven. He has 10 children, six from his previous marriage and four from his second wife who was also found dead at the scene.

"At the time (of the incident), I was in the capital undergoing a course and was called in the afternoon and arrived late," his father said.

"I didn't expect this to happen and was shocked when told of the deaths," he said.

According to the father his son got married to the second wife in 1995. He worked in the private sector, he added.

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei Darussalam and Singapore yesterday celebrated the historic 40th Anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement (CIA) marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations.

To mark the auspicious occasion, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Mr Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister of Singapore, jointly launched the new $20 polymer notes issued by the two countries in a ceremony held at the Istana Nurul Iman.
His Majesty in a titah said that yesterday's event was much more than a routine launching of a new banknote.

"Firstly, we are celebrating what the banknote means; a stable currency and stable prices and employment. Vital investment and trade and strong combined financial reserves that enable us to resist speculation and the damaging costs that this can have on our economies.

"And secondly, we are celebrating what the banknote offers to our people and our

governments, the chance to pursue our national objectives in peace and stability," His Majesty said.
"Like our friends in Singapore, we see that as being the bedrock upon which successful modem nations are built. In Brunei Darussalam, it is that which gives our people confidence in the future. In terms of currency, it is an instinctive confidence that is reinforced in this new banknote.


"On one side, it shows us as sovereign nations. On the other, it shows us as very closely linked in a crucial aspect of modern life. That clearly sums up our countries' relationship," the monarch added.

"Almost every month these days, we are engaged with our partners in Asean in far-reaching consultations with a vast array of countries and regions.

"These cover an equally vast array of complex considerations involving trade, economic and finance. To most of our people, the technicalities involved can be quite bewildering.

`Today's brief ceremony is unlikely to raise such questions," said His Majesty earlier adding that it was a simple yet very important(event) to celebrate as it gives the people the confidence in the most important practical aspect of their day-to-day life.

The Singapore Prime Minister in his return speech said, "The benefits of the CIA are evident in the healthy growth and trade between our two countries. On- the investment front, both sides have invested in fast growing niche areas such as hospitality and medical fields."

He also said that the agreement has also been a boon for tourism between our two countries because it has made it much more convenient for tourists to pay in their own currency.

"In financial year 2005, the total bilateral flow of Brunei and Singapore currencies was more than $645 million," the premier said.

He also said the 4011' anniversary event and the launch of the special commemorative notes mark a significant milestone in our bilateral relations.

His Majesty and the Singapore premier then exchanged, the new $20 Brunei Darussalam and Singapore notes after they were officially launched.

Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister as the Prime Minister's Office, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah and Ambassador at Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna.

The CIA took effect on June 12, 1967 and was signed by Brunei Currency Board (BCB) and the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Singapore (BCCS). The agreement continues to be in full force and effect following BCCS's merger with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in 2002 and after BCB was renamed Brunei Currency and Monetary Board (BSMB) in 2004.

The CIA allows the Brunei Dollar and Singapore Dollar to be exchanged at par, without charge, in each other's country. Both currencies are freely convertible in the two counties. Through the years, the agreement has brought about economic benefits and strengthened financial links for Brunei and Singapore by facilitating bilateral trade, investments, and tourism. The CIA has withstood the test of time and underpins the long-standing friendship and mutual trust between the two countries. Yesterday's launch of the new $20 polymer notes reaffirms to the public, retailers and financial institutions in both countries that Brunei and Singapore currency notes are treated on par.

Bandar Seri Begawan - In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Currency Interchange-ability Agreement (CIA), Brunei Darussalam and Singapore launched $20 polymer notes yesterday.

They were launched at Istana Nurul Iman by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Prime Minister of Singapore Mr Lee Hsien Loona.

There are two versions of the $20 notes, one for commemoration and one for circulation.

The commemorative notes have a special over print with the state crests of both countries and bear the text "40th Anniversary Currency Interchange-ability Agreement".

They will be sold in a set of one piece of B$20 and one piece of S$20 with matching serial numbers, adding up to a total face value of $40 signifying the 40 anniversary.

Of the 12,000 sets made available to the public, 10,000 sets will be issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and 2,000 sets by the Brunei Currency and Monetary Board (BCMB).

Out of the 2,000 sets, 1950 sets will be sold to the public at $88 each. The remaining 50 sets will be placed for auction in Singapore next month.

Also available for sale today at the Brunei Monetary Authority starting from 8.30am are three notes and 24 notes on uncut sheets.

Some 200 sets of three notes on uncut sheets with a total face value of B$60 have been issued and will be sold to the public at B$120 per folder.

Of the 24 notes on uncut sheets, only 25 sheets will be sold to the public at B$820 per sheet.

Besides the commemorative version, the Brunei Currency and Monetary Board (BCMB) and Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) also issued a circulation version of new $20 polymer note, which will be officially available in banks today.

The notes, which are a joint issue by Brunei Darussalam and Singapore, have a common predominant orange colour and common back design. The following are the design elements for the common theme on the back of the note:

Two interlocking "C's (which stands for currency) are featured with the text "Brunei Darussalam. Singapore" inscribed on one arm, and "Currency Interchangeability Agreement 1967-2007" inscribed on the other. At the intersection, the state crests of both countries and the text "Forty years" symbolise the nexus of the agreement.

Distinctive national landmarks of Brunei Damssalam and Singapore are featured.

For Brunei Darussalam, the Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Mosque with the Royal Barge and the Water Village (Kampong Ayer) are featured. For Singapore, the Esplanade and buildings along its city waterfront are featured.

Both countries will retain the respective front design currently issued by each country. For Brunei Darussalam, the front design is the portrait of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the tpomoea Pcs-capre (Tapak Kuda Laut), a medicinal plant with purplish flowers found along the beaches of Brunei Darussalam. This long and resilient creeper plant is chosen to symbolise the Currency Interchangeability Agreement by Singapore's first president, the late Encik Yusof bin Ishak. A stalk of orchids known as Dendrobium Puan Noor Aishah (named after the wife of the late President Yusof Ishak) and the text" Yusof Bin Ishak, First President of Singapore below the portrait has been added to the front design".

Both notes are sized I 49mm x 72mm.

To deter counterfeiting, the new $20 polymer notes have numerous security features. Brunei's $20 polymer note includes one see-through window with the crest of Brunei Darussalam printed in red at the centre. The shadow image of His Majesty's portrait and the initials "HB" arc clearly visible with transmitted light. The asymmetrical serial numbering style has progressively larger digitals in adjacent positions. One set of the serial numbers appears horizontally, the other vertically.

Other security features are the widespread use of intaglio (raised ink) printing on His Majesty's portrait; the flowers surrounding texts and other areas give the note an embossed feel; the numeral 20 is printed on the gold patch in transparent raised printing and will appear at varying angles. Colour switching features, which will change from green to gold in varying angles.

Meanwhile, Singapore's $20 polymer note has two see-through windows, one on the top left-hand side and the other at the bottom right corner. Printed on one side of the money is the shadow image of President Yusof bin Ishak clearly visible with transmitted light; a stylish gold Singapore lion symbol with a hidden image; beside the top left hand window, an image of Singapore arms will appear at varying angles.

Other security features include the security thread in the shape of Singapore island, and a clear window embossed with the numeral "20". At the top and bottom of the window is a repetitive pattern of the numeral "20". Bandar Seri Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam saw yesterday's ceremony (launch of the $20 banknotes) as a visible symbol of Brunei-Singapore relationship.

At the official dinner His Majesty hosted for the visiting Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at Istana Nurul Iman last night, the monarch in a titah said," It is a relationship that we value a great deal. We support far more than each other's currencies. We support each other. This is evident virtually every day in our lives.

"It motivates us when we are working together with our friends and neighbours in Asean. It is clearly evident in our similar work as partners in the new relationships we are all establishing throughout the world outside our region.

"It is a driving force for our businessmen and women who arc taking on the challenges of modem commerce. It inspires our experts, academics and thinkers as they help us to plan our future development.

"It brings us happily together as students, as workers, as visitors, and as friends and family, in other words, Prime Minister, we are linked at very deep levels of understanding, friendship and cooperation.

"We may give all these things serious, formal titles in government ... defence cooperation, education and health cooperation, trade, transport, investment, and economic cooperation.

"But, whatever name we give to our bilateral relations, it is summed up in three simple sentences. We appreciate each other. And we are delighted to be working together," said His Majesty.

"We certainly acknowledge your country's economic performance but perhaps even more than that, we admire the courage you have in your convictions in not only facing up to modern challenges but in constantly devising far sighted solutions," His Majesty added.

The monarch also spoke on the Asean Regional Charter saying, "When the new Regional Charter is completed your people can rightly take great pride in their contribution to making Asean an association with an impact and importance far beyond our Southeast Asian borders."

Meanwhile, Mr Lee in his return speech said, "Singapore and Brunei are the region's smallest nations. And both share common perspectives on many issues which are rooted in mutual interests for peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

He said for Singapore and Brunei,Asean is a cornerstone of foreign policy, so it is important to press ahead with efforts to reinvigorate the grouping and complete the Asean Charter in time for the leader's summit in November.

The premier said Asean must be strong and united so that the countries can ride the wave of Asian growth, become relevant and be at the centre of developments in Asia.

Mr Lee said the two nations' relationship is underpinned by strong personal ties, including regular exchanges at all levels. The personal ties include the Crown Prince's visit to Singapore last year; While Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong was in Brunei just two weeks ago for the Royal Wedding.

The prime minister also said, "Links between Singapore and Brunei have been reinforced by cooperation in a broad range of sectors, including ties between the armed -forces and the police."

Tutong - The family and friends of the late Awg Jofri bin Ahmad Juriah and the late Dyg Derosna bte Jumat were overcome with grief and sorrow when the bodies of the murder victims arrived at the Kampong Penanjong mosque, Tutong District.

The couple was found dead at Kg Telamba Telisai, Tutong on Monday afternoon, in a case that has been classified by the Royal Brunei Police Force as murder. The bodies were brought to the mosque from RIPAS Hospital in two ambulances. After both of the bodies had undergone an Islamic funeral process, they were buried at the Kg Penanjong cemetary.

The families of both victims expressed their thanks to the Royal Brunei Police Force, staff of the DPMMHAMB Hospital Tutong and RIPAS Hospital, Tutong District Office and Tutong District Operation 'E' Fire and Rescue Department for their professionalism in handling the situation.

They also thanked Police Commissioner of the Royal Brunei Police Force Pehin Dato Paduka Zainuddin bin Jailani and wife, Acting Tutong District Officer Awg Hj Jamain bin Momin and wife, and Senior Superintendent Fire and Rescue Awg Tahir bin Hj Muktal, for their presence on the day the victims' bodies were found. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Bandar Seri Begawan - Customs officers made arrests for smuggling satellite TV equipment including 30 satellite sets, four pieces of Astro dish and five receivers worth B$10.000. They were seized after three days of surveillance on the smuggling syndicate by the Preventive and Intelligence Section of the Royal Customs and Excise Department, yesterday afternoon.

Acting on a tip-off from the public, 11 officers led by the Assistant Superintendent of Customs tailed the suspect who was driving the smuggling syndicate's car from Kuala Lurah to the suspect's residence in Tumasek, Jalan Tutong.

Officers caught the suspect red-handed as the suspect was offloading the smuggled items from the car. Two locals in their 40s were detained for assistance in investigations. All the items including the car used were meanwhile confiscated.

The suspect was charged under Chapter 140 of the 2006 Customs Order and the Broadcasting Act, and was released on Customs bail.

The Preventive and Intelligence Section of Royal Customs and Excise thanked the public on their assistance in the operation. They urged members of the public that have any information on the smuggling activities to call their hotline 238 2422 or SMS to 871 4422. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Working Committee of Sponsorship for the Royal Wedding yesterday afternoon called for all banners still hanging at the front of commercial establishments to be taken down as stipulated and agreed to by the buyers earlier.

The committee chairman said the banners of the Royal Wedding should have been taken down by June 16 as agreed earlier.

Bandar Seri Begawan - Kuching - Royal Brunei Airlines will start flying into Sarawak this November, raising expectations of increased tourist arrivals in the state, particularly from Australia and north Asia, The Star reported.

Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) marketing manager Mary Wan Mering said the airline will fly three times a week from the Bruneian capital Bandar Seri Begawan to Kuching beginning Nov 1.

"We regard Bandar Seri Begawan as an important hub for us because Royal Brunei flies into South Korea, Japan, China and Hong Kong a lot.

"We want to tap into these markets and get these passengers to come here through Brunei," she said. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with industry players here on Wednesday, Mering said STB would team up with Royal Brunei to market the new flights at the airline's various destinations, starting with Australia.

"Royal Brunei have very good access to Australian cities, including Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin. So Australia will be our first target, and north Asia after that," she said.

She added that Sarawak currently received about 20,000 tourists from Australia.
