Hamilton sends Twitter apology to Massa and Maldonado
ia his personal Twitter account, Lewis Hamilton has apologised to Formula 1’s fans as well as Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado for his words after the Monaco Grand Prix. When talking to BBC Sport, the 2008 Champion described the drivers with whom he collided as ‘ridiculous’ and ‘stupid’.
Having already been penalised after qualifying, dropping to ninth on the grid, Hamilton made contact with both Massa – just before a crash for the Brazilian – and Maldonado, putting the Venezuelan out of a potential first points finish, in Sunday’s race.
“It’s a joke,” the McLaren driver commented afterwards. “It’s an absolute frickin’ joke. I went up the inside of Massa and the guy turned so early and just turned into me…then I went up the inside of Maldonado, and you can see on the screen that he turned a good car length too early to stop me from overtaking him, and crashed into me. It’s just ridiculous, man. These drivers are frickin’ ridiculous, it’s stupid.”
Hamilton has now followed up with a string of four Twitter messages, posted from his iPhone at 9:40pm BST on Monday:
‘Hey guys. I wanted to apologise 4 last weekends performance & also my comments after, I never meant to offend no1. I would also like to say thank u 2 everyone on here, 4 their positive messages & also 2 the angry messages. I can respect them both.
2 Massa & Maldonado, with the greatest respect I apologise if I offended u. Both of u r fantastic drivers who I regard highly. 2 my fans lost & my fans won, I wish u nothing but love & happiness. God Bless u. Onwards & upwards, Montreal next. Lewis’

Hamilton's reaction was like Senna, says Barrichello
Rubens Barrichello has compared Lewis Hamilton’s post-Monaco Grand Prix outburst to Ayrton Senna, with the McLaren driver having made a number of comments regarding stewards’ decisions as well as the driving styles of Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado. Barrichello, however, is sure that the Englishman’s temperament will calm as years pass.
In a race which saw team-mate Jenson Button challenge for the lead, Hamilton was handed a drive-through penalty plus a further 20-second post-race punishment. During the 78-lap event, the 2008 Champion collided with both Massa and Maldonado before coming under intense media fire for his racism-related comments, which referring to his relationship with the stewards.
“Lewis is a racer, a big one,” Barrichello told Reuters. “In ten years’ time, Lewis will look back and say, 'I shouldn't have tried that' or, ‘Yes, I should have kept doing that'. I don't think, right now, you can get the most experienced driver to grab him and say, 'Lewis, you shouldn't have done this' - because it won't work.
“He's doing very well, so you've got to just let life teach him what's right and what’s not. The most important thing is that he's phenomenal, he's quick and he's a showman because he does some good overtaking - and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
“In the past, Ayrton Senna was criticised for having been very dangerous on the track, and you could see he calmed down as the years progressed; the same thing will happen to Lewis.” |
