Serie A - Mourinho: United will consider me
Internazionale coach Jose Mourinho has said he expects to be considered when it comes to choosing Alex Ferguson's successor at Manchester United - and refused to rule out taking over at Old Trafford.
The pair go head-to-head on Wednesday in their Champions League last-16 second leg, with the score locked at 0-0.
The self proclaimed 'Special One' has endured a turbulent relationship with the Italian press since arriving at the San Siro last summer and question marks remain over his future in Serie A.
With Ferguson now 67 years of age, the day when he finally decides to retire is getting closer - and the former Chelsea boss believes that he is the man for the job.
"I have big jobs left in me, that is for sure, but I can't commit to which ones," he told the News of the World.
"If you want me to rule out ever being Manchester United manager, I can't. Special clubs need special managers so in theory it could work. But nobody knows the future in football.
"The England national team wanted me as coach and that is the biggest job in England, so I am sure when Sir Alex retires they will look at the best managers in the world - and I certainly fall into that category.
"How much time I can't say: Sir Alex doesn't look like he is ready to stop. But when you are managing a winning team you don't want to stop.
"And if you have health then there is no reason to."
There is no doubting the Portuguese's ability as a manager having succeeded in his homeland and England, but his more substance over style approach would not fit with the Old Trafford football mantra.
However, it seems the ex-Porto boss will have to wait for Ferguson to vacate the United hot-seat with the Scot showing no signs of letting up.
"You might have to carry me out. I'm not even thinking about retiring," the Red Devils boss said this week.
More uncertainty surrounded Mourinho's future at Inter when he failed to confirm he would remain at the club at the end of the season.
"In another 86 days I will leave Italy and go on holiday. Will I still be the coach of Inter? In football you never know."

Man Utd backed to win quintuple
Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has backed Manchester United to win the quintuple after seeing his side thrashed 4-0 by the Red Devils in the FA Cup.
The Premier League leaders are through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup having already won the Club World Cup and Carling Cup.
"Of course it is possible for United to win the lot," said Hodgson. "I wouldn't bet against them.
"The most difficult test could come in the Champions League."
United face Inter Milan at Old Trafford in the second leg of their last 16 tie on Wednesday having secured a 0-0 draw in the first leg in the San Siro.
United dominated that game, creating numerous chances, but were unable to get an important away goal that would make their task easier in Manchester.
Their opponents Inter are managed by Jose Mourinho, who masterminded Porto's defeat of United at the same stage of the competition in 2004, where a last-minute goal from Costinha prompted him to sprint from the dug-out to join his players' celebrations.
United are in superb form though, having extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 15 games with victory at Fulham on Saturday evening thanks to two goals from Carlos Tevez, and a goal apiece from Wayne Rooney and Ji-Sung Park.
During this run they have opened up a seven point lead at the top of the Premier League, with a game in hand over their nearest rivals, while last Sunday they overcame Tottenham 4-1 on penalties to lift the Carling Cup.
In December, they won the Club World Cup with a 1-0 win over South American champions Luga de Quito.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson rested Cristiano Ronaldo and Dimitar Berbatov on Saturday and revealed he still finds leaving such players out of his side as one of the hardest parts of his job.
"My biggest concern is picking the right team, it's not easy for me leaving out great players in every game," said Ferguson.
"I hope at the end of the season it will be recognised that everyone has made a contribution.
"Everyone was fit and fresh and bursting to play.
"It was exciting right from the work go, with energy and enjoyment.
"But it was a tricky tie, Fulham were in form and we had to respect that. The last thing we needed was a draw."
