Yui Ichikawa, Oklahoma promote horse racing

Actress Yui Ichikawa and owarai duo Oklahoma have been chosen as campaign characters for the Japan Racing Association's Hokkaido Series, which runs from June 15 to September 30. They will appear in commercials and at several major sporting events this year.
Ichikawa has apparently never bought a racing ticket before, even though she has been to the tracks many times since she was a child. Her grandfather was an employee at the JRA training center in Miho, Ibaraki, and her mother is a racing fan.

Former Morning Musume member Tsuji Nozomi has shocked Japan with her announcement of getting married and being two months pregnant. In the past month, there has been a build up of promotion for Tsuji with her involvement in theater, voice acting and becoming part of a new musical unit.
At a press conference held on Thursday, Both Sugiura and Tsuji apologized to their agency and fans. Talked about how their wedding has been planned but how Sugiura proposed in March. She also answered questions about her stopping activity (including Gyaruru and her theater work). Tsuji also mentioned that she talked about marriage plans with her parents, agency and that they met through a non-entertainment friend (and not Yaguchi Mari as the press originally reported).
There is speculation that the same stern agency (UFA) that fired her friend, (W and Mini Moni) partner and former Morning Musume member Kago Ai may do the same to Tsuji. Her status with Hello! Project is not known.

Nakatani to star in new Mihara film

Actress Miki Nakatani will star in a new film by director Mitsuhiro Mihara, titled "Shiawase no Kaori."
Nakatani plays the role of a mother who loses her husband in an accident. She meets an aging Chinese chef (played by Tatsuya Fuji) who runs a small restaurant, and she decides to seek escape from her life by training to become the shop's successor. For the role, Nakatani is undergoing approximately three months of culinary training.
The story is set in the Hokuriku region of Japan, with filming taking place mostly in Kanazawa, Ishikawa. The movie is being reported as a collaboration with the Ishikawa prefecture to help revive the area, which suffered damage from the Noto Peninsula earthquake in March. Local products and foods are being implemented into the movie.
Filming begins in August, and the release is scheduled for next fall.

Eguchi stars in Father's Day drama special

Next month, Fuji TV will broadcast a "Father's Day special" drama, titled "Papa no Namida de Ko wa Sodatsu." The drama depicts the struggle of a single father balancing work and two children. Actor Yosuke Eguchi, a father of two himself, will play the lead role.
The show will air at 9:00pm on June 15, two days before Father's Day.

Tackey & Tsubasa to host '24 Hour Television'

Tackey & Tsubasa held two concerts on Sunday at the Yokohama Arena, performing in front of a total of about 30,000 fans. In honor of Mother's Day, the performances included a special presentation of carnations for some of the mothers in the audience.
During the concerts, they announced that they will be this year's main personalities on NTV's annual "24 Hour Television" special, which will take place on August 18-19.
Tsubasa Imai also mentioned after the shows that his older sister gave birth to a girl on the same day, and she asked him to decide on the name.

Toyokawa stars in adaptation of Okuda's "Southbound"

"Southbound," a novel by Naoki Prize-winning author Hideo Okuda, is being turned into a movie, directed by Yoshimitsu Morita. The story is about a family led by an unconventional father, a self-styled writer who was once an extremist. The role will be played by Etsushi Toyokawa, accompanied by Yuki Amami as his wife.
 
The movie is scheduled for release in October. Distribution will be handled by Kadokawa Pictures.

Kiyoshi Hikawa gets two out of three, loses to B'z

Singer Kiyoshi Hikawa took two of the top three spots on the Oricon
singles chart this past week. "Abayo" and "Kiyoshi no Soran
Bushi" were both released last Wednesday, and they reached the #2 and #3
positions, respectively.
Selling two Top 3 singles is a fairly impressive feat. Hikawa is the first
solo male singer to do so in 26 years, and the first enka artist in over 34
years. Meanwhile, the singles took the top two positions on the enka chart,
which was last achieved in 2003 by Fuyumi Sakamoto.
Still, Hikawa could not top popular band B'z on the overall singles
chart, whose new tune "Eien no Tsubasa" sold more than Hikawa's
singles combined. This is their 39th consecutive single to debut at #1. It
is also their 40th consecutive single in the Top 10, tying them for the
record with SMAP and THE ALFEE.

Asami Abe replaces Tsuji in Gyaruru

Nozomi Tsuji's replacement in the recently formed unit Gyaruru has been decided. The new member is singer Asami Abe, also known for being the younger sister of former Morning Musume member Natsumi Abe.
Keeping in line with the group's nicknames for Galsone ("Sonene") and Ami Tokito ("Amimi"), Asami will be known as "Abebe."
The group's debut single "Boom Boom Meccha Maccho!" will still go on sale on June 20, as was scheduled before Tsuji's departure, but it is being re-recorded with Abe. It was also decided that the group will hold a free live performance and handshake event on June 30 at the C.C. Lemon Hall in Shibuya.

Actress Hosho married to designer

On Monday, it was discovered that 30-year-old actress Mai Hosho (best known for her role in the "Shomuni" drama series) recently got married to a successful graphic designer, who is seven years older. They met through a mutual friend in 2004 and have been dating for about two years. They registered their marriage on March 6. Reportedly, the couple has no plans for a ceremony, or even a press conference.
Hosho's husband is described as the "choiwaru oyaji" type, with some physical resemblance to Dragon Ash's Kenji Furuya. The man studied design in Los Angeles when he was in his twenties, and in 1997 he created a street fashion brand with a group of friends. The brand is said to have been worn by Takuya Kimura in the Fuji TV drama series "Pride."

Nakama stars as lawyer in summer drama special

Popular actress Yukie Nakama will star as a lawyer in a Fuji TV drama special. The drama is "Shimane no Bengoshi," based on a manga of the same name by Masahito Kagawa and Tetsuo Aoki which is currently being serialized in Business Jump.
The story is set in the Shimane Prefecture, which supposedly has the fewest lawyers in all of Japan. Nakama plays the role of the hard-working and righteous Mizuho Yamazaki, who travels around by bicycle to help her clients.
The special is scheduled to broadcast early this summer.

Enari, Toda get first movie seiyu roles

Actor Kazuki Enari and actress Erika Toda have been given their first voice-acting roles in a movie. Along with young actor Ryunosuke Kamiki, they will play major roles in the Japanese dub of the French semi-animated film "Arthur and the Minimoys," directed and written by Luc Besson.
The Japanese distributor for the film created a list of candidates for the roles, but Besson had the final say. He chose Kamiki as the protagonist Arthur, Toda as Princess Selenia, and Enari as Betameche.
The movie premieres in Japan this September.

TOKIO's Yamaguchi stars in summer drama

Tatsuya Yamaguchi of idol group TOKIO is starring in NTV's "Juken no Kamisama" this summer. This is his first time in a single lead role in a drama series.
Yamaguchi plays the businessman Isamu, divorced from his wife years ago because of his excessive devotion to his work. He lives alone with his son, who suddenly expresses a desire to enter a private junior high school, with his sights set on entering university. Unfamiliar with the world of private schools, Isamu seeks help from the "exam god," a genius junior high school girl (rumored to be played by Riko Narumi).
The series begins in July, and will air on Saturdays at 9:00pm.

Tachi, Aragaki star in 'Freaky Friday'-like drama series

Hiroshi Tachi and Yui Aragaki are set to star in the TBS drama series, "Papa to Musume no Nanokakan." The show will feature a comical "Freaky Friday"-like plot, where an accident on a train results in a father and high school daughter exchanging bodies.
The series is scheduled to start on July 1, airing every Sunday at 9:00pm.

Ueto plays lead voice in "Piano no Mori" movie
Actress and singer Aya Ueto will star in Madhouse's animated film adaptation of Makoto Isshiki's popular manga, "Piano no Mori." She provides the voice for the protagonist, a young boy named Kai Ichinose who has a gift for playing the piano.
Child actor Ryunosuke Kamiki will play Shuhei Amamiya, Kai's friend and rival. The rest of the voice cast includes Hiroyuki Miyasako and Mayuko Fukuda. World-renowned pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy will also participate in the movie, handling the music for the piano scenes.
"Piano no Mori" opens on July 21.

Keita Tachibana added to "Shrek" voice cast
Keita Tachibana of w-inds. has been added to the voice cast of the Japanese dub of "Shrek theThird" (in theaters on June 30), playing the part of Artie. This isTachibana's first role as a voice actor.
It was also announced that w-inds. will sing the image songfor the movie. The title has not yet been announced, but its chaku-uta(mobile phone ringtone) release has been scheduled for June 20.
