'Kitaro' expected to become highest-grossing 'yokai film'
Tue, May 15, 2007 (5:03pm EDT)

The recently released "Gegege no Kitaro" movie is on track to become the highest-grossing film about "yokai," a class of mythological creatures in Japan. The 2005 flick "The Great Yokai War" (directed by Takashi Miike) currently holds the record at 2 billion yen, but "Kitaro" is expected to surpass that mark this week. So far, more than 1.5 million people have watched it in theaters.

Distributor Shochiku is hoping the film eventually reaches 3 billion yen.

The "Gegege no Kitaro" franchise is currently experiencing a widespread boom in popularity. While the movie continues to pull in viewers, the currently running anime series has been achieving excellent ratings. Tourists are also flocking to Tottori to visit Shigeru Mizuki Road, named after the original manga's creator. Compared to the same time last year, visitors have increased by over 160%.

Fuji TV unveils suspense series for daytime drama slot
Tue, May 15, 2007 (4:32pm EDT)

Fuji TV has announced the next series in line for its daytime drama slot, weekdays at 1:30pm. The drama is called "Kiniro no Tsubasa," starring Sachiko Kokubu.

"Kiniro no Tsubasa" is a suspense/mystery series, which is uncommon for a daytime drama. However, the positive response to last summer's "Utsukushii Wana" showed the producers that there is interest among viewers.

Kokubu plays the part of a wealthy widow suspected of murdering her husband. Actor Mizuho Takasugi plays a servant at a resort hotel on a remote island, where the story takes place. Other cast members include Mika Hijii, Arthur Kuroda, and Miyuki Tsurugi.

The series begins on July 2.

Third 'Kikujiro to Saki' series announced
Tue, May 15, 2007 (5:57pm EDT)

This summer, TV Asahi will broadcast a third "Kikujiro to Saki" drama series. The story is based on an original work by acclaimed director Takeshi Kitano, modeled after his own life. It first became serialized on television in 2003, and was followed up by a sequel in 2005.

Takanori Jinnai and Shigeru Muroi return as Kikujiro and Saki, the father and mother in the Kitano household. The new series actually takes place two years before the first one, at a time when the son Takeshi is in third grade. However, the drama will also include scenes of an older Takeshi, played by Takashi Tsukamoto (from the second series). Auditions are being held for the younger part.

The series will air on Thursdays at 9:00pm, starting in July.

Misaki Ito becomes 'kabe onna'
Wed, May 16, 2007 (4:19pm EDT)

Actress Misaki Ito will star in Fuji TV's summer drama, "Yama Onna Kabe Onna." The series is an adaptation of Atsuko Takakura's manga which was serialized in Kodansha's Evening KC magazine.

The story revolves around a woman working in a department store (Ito) whose meager bust has earned her the nickname of "kabe onna" ("kabe" means "wall" and "onna" means "woman"). Unfortunately for her, a well-endowed "yama onna" ("yama" meaning "mountain") gets assigned to the same department, heightening her insecurity.

There is no official word yet on who will play the role of the "yama onna," but rumor says it's Kyoko Fukada.

Former NEWS members Kusano, Uchi back in action
Wed, May 16, 2007 (4:31pm EDT)

Former NEWS members Hironori Kusano and Hiroki Uchi will return to action this summer, but not with NEWS.

Kusano and Uchi were removed from the popular group last year for underage drinking, and were demoted to trainee status within Johnny's Jimusho. Since then, they have been working hard, and the agency has decided that Kusano and Uchi have done enough reflection on their actions.

The two are scheduled to appear in Shonentai's annual musical, "PLAYZONE," which starts on July 9 at the Aoyama Theatre in Tokyo.

Fri, May 18, 2007 (11:33am EDT)

The rumor of a live-action "Negima!" series has apparently been confirmed. Mangaka Ken Akamatsu wrote an entry on his blog announcing the news, and he mentions that the full story will see print in magazines next week.

Akamatsu recognizes that a lot of people won't like the idea of a live-action version, but he says they should hold their judgment until after they've seen the cast for the 31 female students, which is expected to be revealed soon.
