Valencia's Navarro regrets punch in brawl with Inter
MADRID (AFP) - Valencia's David Navarro said he regretted breaking the nose of Inter Milan's Nicolas Burdisso following their Champions League match in scenes described by the Italian press as "shameful."
Navarro told a press conference in Valencia: "First of all I want to say that I am sorry for what happened on Tuesday night. What I did was not good.
"It was a lack of respect for the football world and that's why I wanted to ask forgiveness from the Inter player (Burdisso). If I need to go to Italy to say sorry, I will.
"This is a bad time for me. Nothing like this has ever happened before because I am not a violent person. I am setting a bad example."
Burdisso, speaking to Italian news agency Ansa after returning to Spain, said the attack had been unfair. "I was having an argument with one person and then someone else gave me a punch from behind," Burdisso said. "It was not a man's punch.
"Then the whole team reacted and I think this shows we are a united squad."
Navarro added at his press conference: "It's logical that I am punished by UEFA and I must be ready for anything. I want to say sorry to UEFA, my club, because the example I gave was not good, it wasn't me."

UEFA charges Valencia, Inter players
VALENCIA, Spain (AP) -- UEFA charged Valencia and Inter Milan and five of their players on Wednesday over the brawl that left one player with a broken nose after a Champions League match.
In a statement on its Web site Wednesday, UEFA said both clubs would be charged with "improper conduct, relating to the actions of their respective teams."
Those to be charged for "gross unsporting conduct" are Valencia's Carlos Marchena and David Navarro, together with Inter's Ivan Cordoba, Maicon and Nicolas Burdisso, the player whose nose was broken.
UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body will now decide on the case on March 14, eight days earlier than the soccer body had said in a previous announcement Wednesday. |

UEFA have banned David Navarro for SEVEN months after Valencia's Champions League brawl with Inter Milan.
The Spanish side's reserve keeper cannot play again until October after breaking Nicola Burdisso's nose.
The punch sparked a mass brawl at the end of the European encounter earlier this month.
