This was to ensure that all the new citizens are aware of necessary procedures that can be undertaken at the department.

A further briefing was given by Islamic Dakwah Centre, Information Department, Adat Istiadat Department and Universiti'Brunei Darussalam, to endow the new citizens with greater understanding of their role' and responsibilities as citizens towards developing love and loyalty to the monarchy,; people, religion and country, as is characterised by Brunei's philosophy of Melayu-Islam-Beraja (Malay-Islamic-Monarchy).

"I am very happy to have finally gotten my citizenship," said 67-yearold, Lim Tian Sang, who was born in Brunei.

Chairman of BIA delivers his
speech at the launching ceremony

BIA Chairman Hails Gleneagles- JPMC Joint Venture
By Azaraimy HH

Bandar Seri Begawan - Gleneagles-JPMC has come a long way from five years ago. Over the years the venture has proven to be a successful one.

This was stated by the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office and Chairman of the Brunei Investment Agency (BIA), Pehin Dato Seri Setia Awe Hj Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Baker, yesterday. He was speaking during the official opening ceremony of Gleneagles-JPMC Sdn Bhd, held at the Berkshire Hall, Jerudong Park Polo Club.

Gleneagles-JPMC is a joint venture between the Brunei Investment Agency and Parkway Holdings Ltd. The BIA chairman said several factors had made success in the venture possible. The first factor was the involvement and support of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance, he said.

"Secondly, there is the Parkway Holdings Ltd who has also been very serious in ensuring the success of this venture. They have committed all their relevant resources, systems and staff to Brunei to making sure that GleneaglesJPMC develops as a striking model of healthcare in the area of cardiology," said Pehin Hj Yahya.

"The third factor is the commitment by Brunei Investment Agency through the Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) to optimise and add value to the available assets."

Pehin Hj Yahya said further renovation works have over the last few months been carried out to improve and optimise the facilities at the cardiac centre.

"The commitment of the joint venture company, Gleneagles-JPMC, in providing cardiac services in this country goes beyond what was stated in the agreement with the Ministry of Health," he added.

"Gleneagles-JPMC have also been contributing towards the publication of Healthy Heart Month activities with the Ministry of Health. They have also been contributing towards the publication of health advice in the form of the advertorials in the Bomeo Bulletin and the Media Permata as well as through public and scientific talks."

The BIA Chairman said their demonstration of corporate citizenship clearly demonstrates their serious intent to be a major healthcare centre in Brunei Darussalam.

"Working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, our local doctors and nurses are now also offered the opportunity to work at the centre. In this regard, I hope they will make full use of this opportunity to further increase their skills and expertise.

"Scholarships have also been offered by Parkway Holdings for students who wish to pursue a career in Nursing. Students may also have the opportunity to be attached in Parkway Holdings' hospitals in the region.

Another example of collaborative effort by these three agencies (the Health and Finance Ministries, Parkway Holdings Limited, and the BIA through JPMC) is the convening of the Is' International Cardiology Conference.

Pehin Hj Yahya said this would put Brunei and Gleneagles-JPMC on the map as one of the Premier Cardiology Centres with top class facilities and expertise.

Also present at yesterday's opening ceremony was Dr Lim Cheok Peng, Group President and CEO of Parkway Holdings Ltd, Singapore who is also the Chairman of Gleneagles-JPMC Sdn Bhd. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Car Goes Missing With Girl
By Za'im Zaini

Bandar Seri Begawan - It must have been four hours of sheer agony for a man who left his relative's seven-year-old girl inside a car with the engine on as he got down to buy food only to see the car missing along with the girl when he returned.

According to a police report, the incident occurred at 10.25pm Saturday when John Lan Sie Chong parked his car by the roadside along Jalan Kianggeh in the capital to buy food for his friend. Paying little heed to frequent police warning not to leave children unattended inside cars with their engines on, the man left the seven-year-old girl inside the car and went out to buy food.

Three minutes later, when he returned he got a shock of his life to see the car missing and with it the girl.

SMSes spread like wild fire about the missing car and the girl, reminding of a similar incident a few years ago when a mother left her daughter inside the car to buy food and returned to see the car and the little girl missing.

Yesterday's SMS read, "A car got stolen (car number) half hour ago (car model) red color. Her daughter 8 yrs in car too. Pls help send to friends to look out. Already reported to police".

Brunei District Police received a report on the incident at 11.50pm Saturday. Around 2.21 am yesterday morning, acting on a tip off from villagers in Kg Bebuluh, Limau Manis, police and members of the family of the daughter traced the car at an empty house in Kg Bebuluh.

Seeing the police and her family, the girl ran out of the car to join them to the utter glee of the family.

The girl is reportedly unharmed as there were no signs of any injury. However, the police took her to RIPAS Hospital for a check up.

The Royal Brunei Police Force thanked members of the public for providing information about the stolen car.

The messages kept spreading even after the discovery of the girl yesterday. As much as the SMSes could have helped trace the missing car and the girl, it was eventually twisted and turned adding another girl in the car, which was not true.

According to sources, police are investigating how the car from Jalan Kianggeh finally ended up being abandoned in Kg Bebuluh, Limau Manis. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Bandar Seri Begawan - A shopping trip turned into a fiery experience for four women when their saloon car suddenly burst into flames along Jalan Berakas yesterday.

The Fire and Rescue Department received a call about the incident at 4.28pm and rushed two fire engines and 14 fire fighters including four women.

It took them three minutes to hose down the flames.

According to the driver, a 30-year-old who resides in Kg Lambak, at the time she was with three other members of her family. "I was driving to a shop when we decided to change course to go to an ATM first in Kg Lambak.

"Suddenly, there was a burning smell inside the car. I stepped on the brake but it didn't function, so I swerved to the side of the road and pulled the handbrake.

"We immediately got out of the car and saw flames coming from the left side," she said.

According to Asst Supt Pe, Hj Roslan bin Pg Hj Halus, Head of investigations section of the Fire and Rescue Department, the cause of the flames was due to a leak in the car brake fluid.

The loss has been estimated at $15.000. The incident caused a traffic jam along Jalan Berakas. Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department and Royal Brunei Police Force were on hand to ease the congestion. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Maybe they just don't look after their car properly. It is common knowledge that most people, both males n females alike, only knows how to drive. Some don't even know how to check coolent level, battery water level, m-oil level, etc etc.
