TRAFFIC SIGNAL clashes with BHAGAM BHAG's 'SIGNAL'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 31, 2007]
It seems Madhur Bhandarkar's TRAFFIC SIGNAL has an unlikely competition from a 'signal' of another kind. And this time around, the reference is towards 'Signal', the hit opening number of BHAGAM BHAG which has turned out to be a comfortable hit at he box office.
Now after doing good business at the box office (and still counting), the film is all set to arrive on original DVDs and VCDs at the stands on February 3rd. Call it coincidence, but Madhur's TRAFFIC SIGNAL releases at theatres just a day earlier i.e. February 2nd.
Starring Kunal Khemu, Neetu Chandra, Konkana Sen, Ranvir Shorey, Upendra Limaye and Sudhir Mishra in pivotal roles, TRAFFIC SIGNAL is carrying good reports already and enjoys a sole release status that is bound to work to its advantage. |

He Man's daughter prove tough for Fardeen Khan
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 31, 2007]
It appears that Esha Deol, daughter of Bollywood one and only HE MAN, has lived up to her father's name and reputation.
While her soon to be released JUST MARRIED sounds highly promising, there are number of sweet and saccharine moments in the film that are bound to make this Meghna Gulzar film a cute outing. One of them is a scene that has been shot for their 5 day honeymoon sequence.
As the two roam around in Ooty gardens, Fardeen Khan is suggested by a professional photographer to lift Esha in his arms since it would bring them to pose in a true Bollywood flavor. While Esha is a little shy about it, Fardeen braves up to the challenge only to realize that he could barely lift her a feet above the ground.
No wonder, Fardeen is shown to be all sheepish as he looks at his newly wed wife and questions her about her weight! Well, one can only expect one answer from Esha here - "It's all in the genes - Honey!" |

Music companies on war for Himesh's scores
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 31, 2007]
Guess what's the latest war which is threatening to tremble Mumbai in the current times? The war between two leading music companies that have just released a soundtrack each by Himesh Reshammiya.
While T-Series has released the score of RED around a fortnight back, EROS arrived with NAMASTEY LONDON just recently. The competition is indeed heating up since these are the first two albums by Himesh Reshammiya this year and in a battle of supremacy, none of the two companies would be settling for a second spot.
Both the music companies have intensified the publicity campaign for the soundtracks by highlighting THE Himesh factor and in the days to come, the battle is destined to become a full fledged war.
To their advantage, at least a couple of songs from both the films have become a chartbuster with 'Aafreen' & 'Aameen' [RED] and 'Chakna Chakna' & 'Viraniyaan' [NAMASTEY LONDON] doing the trick. |

Apache Indian goes Belly Dancing
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 31, 2007]
The man who brought a rap wave in India more than a decade back, Apache Indian, is now back on the non-film album circuit with his latest album named 'Sadhu'.
Directed by acclaimed music video maker and 'Ishq Vishk'/'Fida' director Ken Ghosh, the music video of the album's opening number 'Belly Dancing' is currently on air and is making quite an impression. Picturised on Apache and a girl with some stunning looks indeed, 'Belly Dancing' is a lively duet between him and a crooner named Sana.
For starters, Apache has been a trendsetter in his own right when it comes to fusion of Reggae, Raggamuffin, Hip Hop and Bhangra that exploded globally thus creating a new market for the music world to explore. |

"I am in love with Jiah" - Big B
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 01, 2007]
After Anil Kapoor's 'naughty-at-40' act in just released 'Salaam E Ishq', it is Big B's turn to take an extra long step ahead. In his upcoming film 'Nishabd', he plays a man deeply in love with an 18 year old stunner (Jiah Khan).
One doesn't quite remember the last film where Amitabh Bachchan featured as a central protagonist in a love story but in 'Nishabd' he plays a man deeply in love. And to top it all, he is not even short of words and ends up proclaiming his feelings by mouthing the golden words - "I am in love with Jiah" - for one of the film's key sequences.
Yes, we are certainly waiting to catch you in your new avtaar Mr. Bachchan! |

SRK doesn't stop promoting 'Don' even after 15 weeks
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 01, 2007]
Shahrukh Khan is certainly a very happy man with the success of 'Don' which was panned by most critics on the day of its release.
The film has ended up with more than 50 crores in the kitty and the special edition DVDs followed by regular DVDs and VCDs are now out on stands. While a renewed promotional campaign for the film has embarked on a great note to promote the home video, what catches one by surprise is the enthusiasm shown by King Khan himself to ensure that the film reaches homes of all his fans.
He now even features in the latest teaser promo of the film advertising the home video and tells his audience - "Kuch Cheezen Milti Nahin Haasil Ki Jaati Hain', with an obvious reference being towards the film's DVDs.
Now that's what one calls a NEVER SAY DIE spirit! |

Box office analysis
Exclusive By Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 01, 2007]
First weekend performance of latest release
Is 24X7 media a boon or a curse? Nikhil Advani would be definitely wondering aloud about it since the day his 'Salaam E Ishq' hit the marquee. In the times, say as near as 7-10 years back, his film would have been accepted and rejected more or less on its own merits/demerits with word of mouth playing a big role in deciding the film's performance.
But in current times with a couple of dozen leading news channels, a dozen odd websites coming up with the reviews within 3-5 hours of the film's release, thousands of SMSs floating around in a matter of minutes and last but not the least PR agencies [with their positive/negative agendas or the lack of them!] deciding about what to say about the film on the film's release months in advance, it is a matter of first weekend (in majority of cases) to decide the film's fate at the box office.
Yes, 2006 has proved that most of the films boasting of big budgets and aggressive publicity have been safe at the box office but then exceptions are always there and unfortunately it seems that law of averages may well decide 'Salaam E Ishq' to be the film with which it would eventually catch up!
It came across as quite a shock to see 'Salaam E Ishq' opening to poor and at most average reviews. Nonetheless, all ears were now set on word of mouth from the paying junta because time and again they have proved the critics wrong! Well, audience didn't call the film as poor at all but 'Salaam E Ishq' didn't quite make it to must-watch list either. No one hated the film but they also didn't come out singing praises about it. There was only one thing that was said by one and all (a much abused statement heard since the film's release) - "The film is quite long and bores at more than just a few places!" Result? Even though the film has some real good moments with decent to very good performances by majority of starcast, it has almost become a fashionable statement to say that the film doesn't appeal, lest one is accused/mocked at about actually falling for the film's mushy moments during its 3 hours + duration!
Coming to the film's box office performance, though it opened in the range of being good to very good, the word of mouth, as detailed above, is not really helping the film's cause in the current scenario. The film is expected to fetch a good first week total but it would require some aggressive damage control by the makers of 'Salaam E Ishq' and reversal in pseudo word of mouth by audience to survive a crash in weeks to come. And that's because all said and done, 'Salaam E Ishq' is at the least an above average piece of entertainment that deserves to break even at the box office, if not being called a classic in years to come.
Second release of the week, 'Parzania', saw a selective release and with near zilch promotion and lack of entertainment value, it would have to relegate itself to making festival rounds. the film has failed to find an audience and would disappear in a matter of fortnight.
Last week's movies
First week of 'Risk' was quite poor and the writing was on the wall on the very first day of its release. With just about 2 crores in its kitty and a heavy fall in the second weekend, the film would find a quick way out of theatres and go down as yet another flop of 2007! Collecting 40 lakhs from Mumbai with Delhi being second highest at 20 lakhs, the film also suffered from the fact that at majority of theatres it was discontinued after Wednesday itself to make way for SEI to arrive on Thursday.
Tanushree Dutta can be content with a fact that she now has a song 'Hitchki' to her credit which she can utilize for her stage/award performances while Randeep Hooda could be a new macho performer to make his presence felt. Vinod Khanna may have lost the box office battle with 'Risk' but has firmly announced his comeback to the big arena. One waits his go ahead to some more exciting projects from hereon and for that director Vishram Sawant needs a pat on his back for making this happen!
'Mr. Hot Mr. Kool' has been a mother of all disasters as it has folded up at mere 5 lakhs!
From the past
After an impressive first week at the theatres with appreciation coming in from critics and audience [mainly class] alike, 'Guru' enjoyed a second good week in succession with 45% fall in collections. Looking at the great word of mouth, one expected around 30% fall [much less than the 50% industry standards] but ultimately a 9.5 crore total meant that 'Guru' stood tall at 27.5 crores. The film enjoyed yet another bumper week in Mumbai with 2.5 crores coming in while Delhi too had more than 1 crore as per its 6 days collections.
Biggest success for Abhishek Bachchan so far where he has pulled off a film solely on his shoulders, 'Guru' is now also the first success for Mani Ratnam when it comes to his films in Hindi. The film has given a solid platform for Abhishek to choose his projects very carefully from hereon and be hailed as an actor who knows how to deliver goods. 'Guru' has come at just the right time of his career where he has done all kind of movies and now should have an idea of what works and what not!
'Bhagam Bhag' continued its trend of 60% falls week after week and added another 80 lakhs to its total. At 41 crores and a hit status to boast, the film is now arriving on original DVDs/VCDs in the coming weekend. Would Priyadarshan or the producers of the film thinking of a sequel here? Now if they do, how about having more of Govinda, especially in the wake of him being the only actor who has come out unscathed from 'Salaam E Ishq'?
'Dhoom 2' and 'Vivah' continue to enjoy their stint in the Top-5 in spite of being at theaters for 9 and 11 weeks respectively. Collections keep pouring in for both the films as they both added around 75 lakhs each to bring their totals to 85 crores and 28 crores respectively.
In the future
For a film like 'Traffic Signal', it is nothing but bonus and sheer luck to arrive as a solo release. Coming from Madhur Bhandarkar, it is a film that needs to be applauded for being a kind of film that boasts of a unique subject and still dares to arrive without any established stars. An ensemble piece, it would be seeing a decent release of around 250 prints. The film may take an average opening but if the claims of people associated with it turn out to be true [i.e. it is one black comedy that would make you laugh and think at the same time], the word of mouth and an open week factor should manage to take it through. With the coming week also relatively open with only 'Black Friday' expected to arrive, the film should end up as an earner. |

Jimmy-Neha make for one lovely couple
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, February 02, 2007]
In a season of films about married couples and relationships they share ['Salaam E Ishq', 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd', 'Just Married'], another on-screen couple that should be seen making their presence felt is none other than Jimmy Shergill and Neha Dhupia.
Appearing as newly weds in their soon to be released 'Delhii Heights', they look rather cute together as a young couple settled in apartments that go by the name of 'Delhii Heights'.
As Abi and Suhana who are fairly successful in their professional lives, they have happy times together, except for one seemingly minor sounding problem - they work for rival companies.
Hence while they both sure quite a healthy marital relationship, the fact that they cross their ways professionally threatens to impact their personal life too. How they face the challenge and try to overcome this issue in their life forms the essence of their cute'n'lovely story! |

If hope dies, contact BIG BROTHER
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, February 02, 2007]
"If hope dies, contact BIG BROTHER!"
And no, this is not what Shilpa Shetty is saying post her win at the namesake show. It is actually the punch line of the film called BIG BROTHER that stars Sunny Deol in the title role.
Playing a 'big brother' to many a men and women in trouble, Sunny Deol gets into his 'janta ka maseeha' role once again with BIG BROTHER after enacting such roles in half a dozen odd films in the 90s.
With a tagline of "Every family has a hero", the film which was earlier titled 'Deodhar Gandhi', is being presented to the audience as an action drama that would appeal to youth and families alike.
Directed by Guddu Dhanoa, the film stars Priyanka Chopra as the female lead. |

Next two biggies releases star Saif in the lead
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, February 02, 2007]
Guess who is the star attraction of the two biggest releases in the coming months? None other than Saif Ali Khan!
After making headlines with his lean mean act in 'Omkara', Saif would be seen in two back to back high profile projects - 'Eklavya - The Royal Guard' and 'Tara Rum Pum'.
Though former is a multistarrer with Big B, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Jimmy Shergill and Boman Irani filling in for the men power, with TRP Saif goes solo in a project that is produced by none other than Yash Raj Films.
Between 'Eklavya - The Royal Guard' [February 16] and 'Tara Rum Pum' [April 27], there are a dozen odd other films lined up for release but none match to their scales when it comes to budget and grandeur.
In between the two movies, there is also a probability of Saif's 'Nehlle Pe Dehlla' arriving on March 02 though one awaits an official confirmation. |
