Bundesliga - Bayern inch closer to title Eurosport - Sun, 27 Apr 17:47:00 2008
BayernMunich beat Stuttgart 4-1 to move 12 points clear in the Bundesligawith only one point required from their last four games to seal a 21stGerman title.
Luca Toni scored his 36th goal in 42 matches in the eighth minute. Antonio da Silva equalised nine minutes later before Mark van Bommel fired in a superb low shot that curled around the wall off an indirect free-kick in the 55th minute.
Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld had rested Franck Ribery along with four other first-team players ahead of a semi-final second leg UEFA Cup match on Thursday at Zenit St Petersburg.
However, he decided to send Ribery on in the 57th minute and the France playmaker scored twice within two minutes.
Riberyblasted a spectacular long-range shot into the top-right corner beyondthe fingertips of keeper Raphael Schaefer in the 75th minute and thenbeat two Stuttgart defenders before firing in a crisp shot with hisweaker left foot.
"He came off the bench and showed his classright away," said Hitzfeld, who also sent in Ze Roberto for the final23 minutes to tune up for St Petersburg. "Ribery scored two dreamgoals."
Hitzfeld made it clear that reaching the UEFA Cup final was the top priority with the Bundesliga title all but wrapped up.
"I'm glad I rested Ribery," he said. "He was hugely motivated when he came in off the bench."
Bayern,who drew 1-1 at home with Zenit St Petersburg last week, lead the tablewith 66 points. They won the German Cup last Saturday.
WerderBremen are second with 54 points after losing ground on Saturday with a3-3 draw at Karlsruhe. Schalke are third, also with 54 points, afterbeating Hamburg 1-0 on Saturday.
Hitzfeld said it was hard toimagine Bayern squandering the championship now with a 12-point leadand four matches left - along with a superior 20-goal advantage oversecond place Werder Bremen.
"The team showed a lot ofcharacter once again," Hitzfeld added. "We believe we can win everymatch with five or six fresh players coming in.
"We'd be on our last legs if we had to play so many matches with the same 11 players."
In the day's other match Bayer Leverkusen were held 2-2 by Wolfsburg at home, hindering their chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Sagnol Reveals His Hatred For Hitzfeld
BayernMunich full-back Willy Sagnol has revealed his extremely frostyrelationship with legendary manager Ottmar Hitzfeld and is lookingforward to his departure in June...Hitzfeld is renowned for his exceptional success with both BorussiaDortmund and Bayern Munich in the late 1990s and early 2000s, butrecently returned to the Allianz Arena to revive the side after adramatic dip in form.
He has overseen a revolution of sorts, asthe German Cup is already in the bag for the Bavarian giants, whilethey are 10 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and all-butchampions, having finished fourth last season.
A treble is onthe cards, as they are also favourites to lift the UEFA Cup, despiteZenit St Petersburg currently holding the advantage after the firstleg, Bayern's ruthless and cruel dismissal of Getafe in the previousround showed just why they are favourites to win the competition.
Sagnol,though, has been out of favour. The French international has beenousted by Marcel Jansen, who plays left-back, while Phillip Lahm hasmoved over to the right side, Sagnol's old starting position.
Hehas therefore been reduced to fleeting appearances in midfield and isfurious with the manager's tactical decision, blasting him andrevealing he does not even speak with him.
The former Monaco manis hopeful he will stay on at Bayern Munich this summer, as he has highhopes for Jurgen Klinsmann, who will be taking over from Hitzfeld atthe end of the season. Otto turned down a contract extension and haschosen to retire at the end of the season.
