Official: Sam Michael joins McLaren

It has been confirmed that Sam Michael, Technical Director for Williams, will join McLaren as Sporting Director from 2012 onwards. Having announced his Williams departure earlier this year, the Australian will leave after next weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix. He had also been linked with Force India and Virgin Racing.

To confirm the news on Tuesday afternoon, Williams and McLaren issued press releases within 21 minutes of each other. Michael’s earlier exit from Williams was unexpected, as he had been due to work up to the Korean Grand Prix.

‘Sam will join the senior management team in addition to taking specific responsibility for the development and management of the team’s trackside operations,’ reads McLaren’s statement. ‘His vast experience and profound understanding of race operations will enhance the team’s on-track capability, adding significantly to its already impressive technical management strength-in-depth.’

“I’m extremely excited to be joining Vodafone McLaren Mercedes,” says Michael. “Being a racer my whole life, I know that McLaren is one of the all-time greats of Formula 1. I already know and respect many of the team’s senior technical management figures and becoming a member of that excellent working unit was one of the prime attractions of this new position.

“Equally, for some time I’ve closely observed and greatly admired both Lewis (Hamilton) and Jenson (Button) as grade-one drivers and therefore regard it as an enormous privilege to be able to work with both of them.

“I’ve spent 11 seasons with WilliamsF1, have many fond memories and truly wish them all the best. In the near future, however, I will become 100 percent focused on Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and will be aiming to ensure that the team’s famous rocket-red victory t-shirts will be seen many times over the coming years.”

The move has also been acknowledged by McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh:

“Speaking on behalf of everyone at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, I’m very pleased to welcome Sam as an important senior addition to our race team. He’ll bring a very valuable blend of experience and expertise to our pit wall and will also enrich the technical management we provide for our drivers.

“I’m certain he’ll work extremely well with our senior technical management team, which I firmly believe will now become the strongest in all of Formula 1.”

Official: Button and McLaren sign multi-year deal

McLaren has officially confirmed the much-expected news that Jenson Button will be remaining with the Woking outfit, with a new multi-year contract having been signed. The precise number of years remains unknown at present.

Button joined McLaren as World Champion at the start of 2010 and has so far achieved four of his 11 career wins with the team, with two of those being at this year’s Canadian and Hungarian Grands Prix. 2012 will mark the Frome driver’s 13th season in the sport, having debuted with Williams in 2000.

“I’ve never felt more at home at a team than I do at McLaren,” Button says via an official Wednesday press release. “I’ve won four of the greatest races of my life here, I’m currently lying second in the Drivers’ World Championship and I feel that I’m driving better than ever.

“You can only achieve that with the right level of support – and I truly believe that the passion and determination to win are stronger here at McLaren than anywhere else.

“As a Grand Prix driver, those are incredibly powerful feelings to share and be part of and they’ve only reinforced my desire to commit my long-term future to this team. I’ve made no secret of my ambition to continue winning races and World Championships and I fully believe this is the place where I can achieve those aims.”

The confirmation has also been welcomed by Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh, who has repeated at recent races that the 31-year-old would be staying.

“Jenson is a great driver and a great guy,” says Whitmarsh. “In fact, I can safely say that he’s one of the most capable and respected drivers we’ve ever had and I’m therefore absolutely delighted that he’ll continue to work with us into the future. He’s a considerable credit to this organisation and I’m proud to be his Team Principal.

“I feel sure that he’ll now build on the considerable success he’s already achieved with us and will be even more successful with us in years to come. I think he and Lewis (Hamilton) say it better than anyone. Their comments show just how much they respect and trust each other and they once again continue to prove what we as a team have always known: that McLaren has the very best driver line-up in all of Formula 1.”

McLaren eager to extend Hamilton’s contract

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton has faced a difficult season thus far, having been involved in a number of incidents and incurring an array of penalties from the stewards. The Woking squad feels it has let the 2008 World Champion down in terms of car pace, but hopes to extend Hamilton’s contract, just as it did with Jenson Button last week.

"Lewis is his own biggest critic," said McLaren Managing Director Jonathan Neale. "He desperately wants to win and he’s understandably not happy when either his team mate beats him or someone else is winning the race or the championship. So after seeing the title slide away this year to Red Bull, he’s tough on himself and very disappointed.

"We would be disappointed if he didn’t feel that way. Lewis is a phenomenal driver. He’s had 16 race wins, is constantly exciting on the circuit and is always in the action. And we love him for that. So certainly I’m concerned to make sure that he feels and understands that we are 100 percent behind him.

"It’s been a difficult season for him. We haven’t given him the car to get the job done, but what he’s done with it has been fantastic. We’re delighted to have re-signed Jenson and we’re confident Lewis wants to stay here and we want Lewis to stay here after next year. We’re very confident he’ll be firing on all cylinders in the car next year.

"We need to give him a car to get the job done and that’s our responsibility. Every driver wants to be in a team that can win, and we can here. We are disappointed in ourselves not to win the World Championship, but we've put up a good fight and on a number of occasions we’ve had the quickest race car, as we saw in Japan."

McLaren prepares for 700th Grand Prix

This weekend’s 2011 Korean Grand Prix marks the 700th Formula 1 race for McLaren, which celebrated its 174th victory at Suzuka courtesy of Jenson Button.

Established by Bruce McLaren, the New Zealander took the team to its first race win at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix, with Emerson Fittipaldi clinching the first Drivers’ Championship for the now Woking-based outfit in 1974.

The team has housed a number of World Champion drivers and famed Team Principals Teddy Mayer and Ron Dennis before current head Martin Whitmarsh took the reigns in 2009.

McLaren sits third for Constructors’ Championship wins on eight, behind only Ferrari and Williams and having last triumphed in 1998.

McLaren Formula 1 statistics at a glance:

699 race starts
174 Grand Prix wins
146 pole positions
148 fastest laps
465 podium finishes
318 front row starts
350,056 kilometres raced
48,113 kilometres in the lead
10,153 laps in the lead
4,223.5 Constructors’ points
