World War 2 relic found at Clementi Ave 1 construction site
By Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 03 March 2009 1638 hrs

SINGAPORE: There was plenty of police and military activity around Clementi Avenue 1 and Commonwealth Avenue West on Tuesday. The cause for the alarm was an unexploded World War 2 relic.

The war relic was discovered at about 6pm on Monday at a construction site near Block 411 Commonwealth Avenue West.

Experts from the Singapore Armed Forces said it was a Japanese aerial bomb dating from the Second World War.

Usually, when a war relic is discovered, it is taken to a military live firing range to be disposed of. But bomb disposal specialists decided it was actually safer to carry out the operation at the site itself this time around.

That was because the fuse had already been activated, so transporting the 50-kilogramme bomb could be risky.

To be safe, SAF personnel moved the relic to another part of the site, away from the residential block.

The plan was to cut open the relic's steel casing and gently burn away the explosives. But in the process the bomb went off as planned at about 5:30pm. Fortunately sandbags ensured that no harm came about.

Earlier in the day, police had diverted traffic away from nearby Clementi Road and construction work on the site had to be halted.

Students from neighbouring NUS High School of Mathematics and Science were also asked to leave their campus as it was used as an operations base by the police.

Experts said war relics are a relatively common find in Singapore, but this was one of the rare occasions where a public disposal was necessary. The last occasion was in 2004. - CNA/vm

SAF driver jailed 16 months for helping to smuggle cigarettes
By Leong Wee Keat, TODAY | Posted: 03 March 2009 2042 hrs

SINGAPORE: One of three Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) servicemen charged for accepting bribes to help smuggle cigarettes out of a military base had been sentenced to 16 months' jail.

Ang Zi Heng, 22, pleaded guilty to one charge of corruptly accepting about 18 to 20 cartons of contraband cigarettes from a staff of the Indonesian Navy in exchange for transporting contraband cigarettes out of Changi Naval Base for sale to a Singapore syndicate.

Ang was the vehicle commander of a military minibus driven by Ee Jin Liang last August.

Some members of the Indonesian navy, who were here for a meeting, loaded cartons of contraband cigarettes onto the minibus that Ee and Ang were driving and directed the Singaporeans to drive to the carpark outside the naval base.

Ee and Ang made a total of five to six trips and they received contraband cigarettes with a street value of S$756 for helping with the smuggling.

The prosecution argued for a deterrent sentence as Ang had committed the offence in the course of his duties as a military driver and undermined the security of Changi Naval Base.

Ang, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency and claimed he did not communicate with the Indonesian staff due to a language barrier. Family members said Ang was a non-smoker and gave the contraband cigarettes away to others.

The two others involved in the case, Ee and Adrian Tan, will appear in court on March 13. If convicted, they could each be jailed up to five years and/or fined a maximum of S$100,000.

42 years' jail, 24 strokes of cane for serial sexual offender
By Leong Wee Keat, TODAY | Posted: 03 March 2009 2108 hrs

Bala Kuppusamy - Photo from Singapore Police Force

SINGAPORE: This sexual offender remembered his sentences well.

In the High Court on Monday, he corrected a prosecutor who stated that he had been given 24 strokes of the cane more than 20 years ago.

It was actually 28, said Bala Kuppusamy.

Yet after spending almost two decades in jail and getting some 48 strokes in all, Kuppusamy could not control his sexual urges or resist resorting to violence against women.

Within 41 days of his release last year from 15 years in prison, he terrorised seven women, using the darkness of night as a cover to rob and sexually assault them.

The women - including four who were below 21 years old - were kicked or punched as they were robbed of cash and personal belongings. Three of them were also sexually assaulted, including a 16-year-old Singaporean student.

Kuppusamy attacked four women during a span of eight days. But it will be a long time before the 48-year-old cleaner would have any opportunity to repeat his crime again.

The serial sex offender was sentenced to 42 years behind bars and 24 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to nine charges in relation to various offences committed against four of his victims.

Six additional charges in relation to another three victims were also taken into consideration during the sentencing. His sentence is the longest one to be handed out by the courts so far for such offences.

Justice Tay Yong Kwang, who agreed with the prosecution's submission, said: "Too many females had suffered because of this merciless, marauding monster for whom liberty is a licence to rob, rape or ruin the lives of innocent females. He must not be allowed to go on another nocturnal rampage of violent punching and vile penetration."

Deputy public prosecutor Francis Ng had labelled Kuppusamy "a menace to society" and urged Justice Tay to impose an aggregate custodial term of between 40 and 45 years' jail.

He pointed out that Kuppusamy's offences were similar to rape on many points, and should be treated on par as such, in terms of severity.

For example, Kuppusamy approached the student for directions to Braddell Road. She agreed to show him as it was on her way home. He then dragged her into a forested area and sexually assaulted her. He ordered her to perform oral sex on him, which she did out of fear.

Kuppusamy, who was unrepresented, pleaded to be given another chance, claiming he would not run afoul of the law again.

Justice Tay, however, noted that it was obvious that Kuppusamy posed "a very grave danger to society, especially to our women folk". He noted that Kuppusamy had told a prison psychologist that "using physical violence is the fastest avenue in attaining submission" from his victims.

Calling his conduct "atrocious", Justice Tay said Kuppusamy "is not fit to live free in society. Even the maximum of 20 years preventive detention would be much too lenient for a predator like the accused here."

Kuppusamy's criminal history:

Nov 1987: Convicted of rape, robbery with hurt and two counts of snatch theft. Sentenced to 11 years' jail and given 28 strokes of the cane.

Sept 8, 1992: Released from jail. Went on to commit second series of offences 45 days later on Oct 23.

July 16, 1993: Convicted of rape, carnal intercourse against the order of nature and robbery with hurt. Sentenced to 23 years jail and caned 24 times.

March 17, 2008: Released from custody. Within 41 days of his release, went on to commit the third series of offences, beginning on April 27.

Police to get more powers
Mega events and terror threats make S'pore's security more complex
By Jeremy Au Yong, Political Correspondent

HOME Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng on Monday tabled a Bill in Parliament that will give the police more effective powers to maintain public order, for example during major events like the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit which Singapore will host in November.

Protests and terrorist action are some of the threats that bedevil such mega events that Singapore is increasingly hosting.

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the proposed Public Order Act is part of a continuous review of public order laws, to keep them up to date with a progressively more complex security environment.

'We...need to squarely address gaps in the current framework, to enhance the ability of the police to ensure security during major events, and to maintain public order in a manner which will ensure the general level of safety and security in Singapore that we enjoy today,' it said.

The latest legislative move focuses on outdoor activities, as permits for indoor activities have already been liberalised.

Outdoor activities which are purely recreational, social or commercial in nature could be exempted from having to get permits, MHA indicated, leaving only those which are political or cause-related needing them.

At present, all outdoor activities, regardless of their nature, are regulated by the Public Entertainments and Meetings Act and the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act.

Relevant portions from these will be consolidated under the new law.

The most significant new provision MHA is introducing is the move-on order, enabling the police to order a person to leave an area if they determine that he is about to break the law.

The order will be in the form of a written notice stating the area and the time period (up to 24 hours) the person has to stay away from the area.

Oleh
Linilidia Abdul Hamid

Ashley Isham-designed Coca-Cola Light bottles available from April
By Satish Cheney, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 28 March 2009 0108 hrs

Ashley Isham-designed Coca-Cola bottle

SINGAPORE: Roberto Cavalli, Manolo Blahnik, Nathalie Rykiel and Matthew Williamson have all done it. And now, Singapore's fashion guru Ashley Isham has done it, that is, making the iconic Coke bottle come alive.

He has worked with Coca-Cola Singapore to put his design, titled "Jewel In Your Hand" on over 100,000 commemorative bottles and one million cans of Coca-Cola light for the Audi Fashion Festival 2009, to be held in Singapore from May 6 to 10.

He said: "I was speechless when Coca-Cola light approached me as I realised I would be the first Singaporean to have this rare honour.

"It's a novel canvas to work on, and creatively challenging as I was outside my comfort zone with this piece. But it was so much fun and I loved the opportunity to reinterpret an iconic image."

Ashley is based in London and his dresses are worn by many celebrities globally, including Angelina Jolie, Zara Philips, Kylie Minogue, Dido and Mariah Carey.

According to Ashley, the design for the Coke bottle was inspired by his recent Autumn/Winter '09 collection that was unveiled at this year's London Fashion Week.

"I had designed a Blade Runner inspired jewel-encrusted corset dress as a futuristic showpiece and thought that it would be a great idea to mould this couture look for Coca-Cola light," he explained.

Ashley joins the ranks of other artists and designers who have been approached to lend their midas touch to the Coke bottle.

The best known of the Coke artists was Andy Warhol, who exhibited his "100 Coke Bottles" at his first pop art show in New York in 1962.

Collectors and fans will be able to purchase the Ashley Isham-designed Coca-Cola light when they go on sale island wide from April.

EUNICE Olsen already has the Miss Singapore Universe crown in her court. Now, the 31-year-old Nominated Member of Parliament is in contention for another beauty title.

She ranks among the Top 10 in the list of the world's most beautiful women in politics and government. With 18,980 points, she is in 10th position, just after Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

The ongoing online pageant, to be decided by a poll, has been posted on Spain's 20 Minutos newspaper since December last year. It invites netizens to vote for their choice of contestants. The posting features 64 candidates from 30 countries, including China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Jiang Yu. By yesterday, Ms Jiang was ranked 47th with 6,533 points, just three notches below US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Peruvian politician Luciana Leon, 30, was in first place with 46,512 points, while her compatriot Mercedes Araoz, 47, was second with 28,576 points.

The other Asian in the list is Japanese Yuri Fujikawa, 27, who was in the fourth position with 25,422 points.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was ranked 32nd, while Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was ranked 31st in the list.

Ms Olsen, the winner of the Miss Singapore Universe contest in 2000, is a Eurasian Singaporean. She is of mixed Swedish and Malaccan Portuguese ancestry from her father's side and Chinese from her mother's.

She is an active volunteer, providing counselling services to troubled teens. A former TV artist, she now aims to raise awareness about youth issues and to promote youth programmes and volunteerism.

The Beijing-born Ms Jiang has worked for the Foreign Ministry for more than 20 years and has been posted around the world, including the United Nations headquarters in New York.

She was designated the ministry's spokesman and deputy head of its information department in 2003, becoming the country's fourth woman to hold that position since the spokesman system was introduced in 1983.

The online poll does not say when the vote ends and when the winners will be announced.

KES ANCAM AP

LELAKI DIHUKUM PENJARA ENAM BULAN

LELAKI karung guni, Ng Kim Ngweng, semalam dijatuhi hukuman penjara enam bulan setelah didapati bersalah mengancam akan mencederakan Anggota Parlimen (AP) GRC Jalan Besar, Cik Denise Phua.

'Saya amat bersimpati apabila mendengar Ng dijatuhi hukuman penjara enam bulan.

Biker grabs woman's bag, drags her along road for 10m

[top photo - HURT: Mrs Chua Huey showing the abrasions and bruises on her wrists and knees.]

By Crystal Chan

A SINGAPORE woman was dragged for about 10m on the road when her handbag was snatched by a motorcycle-riding robber in Johor Baru.

In her shock and confusion, Mrs Chua Huey, 39, a secretary, held on to her handbag, which contained cash and her passport, and was dragged.

Her husband, Mr SK Chua, 40, a sales executive, chased the robber and shouted at him to stop, but to no avail.

By the time Mrs Chua released her handbag, she was bleeding from abrasions to her arms and legs.

Recounting her ordeal to The New Paper at the family's Bukit Timah terrace house, she said: 'It happened so suddenly that I didn't realise it was a snatch theft. I thought someone had just tugged at me by mistake, so I held on to my bag.

'It was only a few seconds later that I realised the motorcyclist wanted to steal my bag and that the bike was dragging me along the road.'

The family had gone to Teck Sing restaurant in Taman Sentosa in Johor Baru on 7Mar.

At 9pm, after dinner, the family went to The Store, a mall opposite the restaurant, to buy groceries.

Loading car

Mr Chua was putting three plastic bags of groceries into the boot of his multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) at 9.55pm when the incident happened.

Recalled Mrs Chua: 'The motorcycle was moving so fast that I didn't notice the licence plate number. The robber was also wearing a helmet so I couldn't see his face, except that he had a brown complexion.'

Her handbag contained her passport, ez-link card, handphone, $400, RM500 ($210) and four credit cards.

The couple's 7-year-old son was so upset at seeing his mother being dragged along the road that he began crying.

'He's seen such scenes on television, but I guess seeing it in real life frightened him,' said Mr Chua.

The Chuas made a police report at the Taman Pelangi police station, and there they met another Singaporean couple, who had also fallen victim to a snatch thief.

Mrs Chua said: 'The wife also had her bag taken, but she didn't suffer any injuries as the strap snapped when the thief rode off.'

The Chuas gave the couple a ride back to Singapore in their MPV.

Mr Chua thinks his wife was targeted because the robber saw their Singapore-registered MPV.

He said: 'The officer taking our statement said Singaporeans are the first choice for thieves, because we're likely to have more money.'

Mrs Chua immediately cancelled her SIM card and credit cards.

The Chuas were allowed to enter Singapore after they showed Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers the Malaysian police report stating that Mrs Chua's passport was stolen.

ICA officers also called an ambulance to take her to National University Hospital, where she received outpatient treatment.

The medical bill came to about $100 and she hopes to be reimbursed through her personal accident insurance.

She collected her new passport two Saturdays ago.

The ICA waived the replacement fee of $50 that applies to lost or damaged passports after its officers were shown the police report.

The Chuas are no longer keen to travel to Malaysia.

'We used to drive to Genting Highlands at least twice a year. Just last week, my friend asked if I wanted to go to Penang, but I declined,' Mr Chua said.

'We need time to forget this incident and we don't know if something will happen to us again the next time we go to Malaysia.'

A Johor police spokesman said that since the start of the year, crime in the state had dropped by 1,052 cases, or 17 per cent, from the 6,106 cases reported in the same period last year.

She said that to deter snatch thieves, the police would use emergency law to detain suspects up to 60 days without trial.

PENGGUNA NETS MENANG KERETA BMW

Oleh
Siti Aisyah Sa'id

Last Sat gi Geylang, ingatkan nak makan rojak.. tapi tutup.. rupa2nya gara2 nie..

~~~~~~~~~~~
1 woman died, more than 100 ill after eating Indian rojak from famous stall
Over 100 patrons of the Indian rojak stall sought treatment at hospitals. One woman who fell into coma has died.
Singapore, April 6, 2009 - One woman has died after falling into a coma. She is among the more than 100 people who ate Indian rojak from a famous stall in Geylang Serai and suffered food poisoning.
Woman in coma dies
Canteen assistant Aminah  Samijo, 57, fell unconscious at home on Friday night. Earlier in the afternoon, she and her husband, Mr Ali,  had patronised the rojak stall. The couple vomitted and had diarrhoea that night but Madam Aminah's condition got worse - she fainted at 11pm.
Her family called an ambulance which sent her to Changi Hospital. While Mr Ali's condition was stable, his wife developed a fever on Saturday. Her condition worsened and she died this morning at around 6.30am at Changi hospital.
Her body was moved to Singapore General Hospital for autopsy. Food poisoning could cause organ failure and death, and eldely patients are more prone to that.
Madam Aminah had kidney problems and low blood pressure before the incident.
The rojak stall, operated by a father and son team, had been shut following the food poisoning incident. Known as Rojak Geylang Serai, the stall had received a 'recommended' rating by famous food guide Makansutra.
Those who fell sick sought treatment at the six major hospitals in Singapore and had said they had eaten rojak from the Geylang Serai stall.
By 5pm on Saturday, 75 of the victims had sought treatment at Changi Hospital. Seventeen of them were warded.
Tan Tock Seng, KK and NUH hospitals received 10, seven and nine patients respectively. Seven at Tan Tock Seng had to be warded while five had to remain at KK Hospital.
Singapore General and Alexandra hospitals had one patient each.
It is believed there were many more who had eaten rojak bought from the same stall.
The incident to be the worst mass food poisoning case to hit Singapore since 2007. That year, more than 150 got sick after eating Prima Deli products.
Lorry driver, 4 children warded
Another victim, lorry driver Mr Abdul, 44, and his family also ate at the same stall though at different times. He and his wife and four children also fell sick. All of them accompanied him to Changi hospital but as the children became ill, three of them were sent to KK Hospital because of their young age while one was admitted to Changi hospital.
Mr Abdul's wife, Rohanna, who still suffered the effects of food poisoning, had no choice but to shuttle between the two hospitals to see that her children and husband were all right.
Mr Abdul had patronised the rojak stall with a friend during lunch time on Friday. His wife took their kids to the stall later that afternoon. It was their favourite Indian rojak stall.
On Saturday the rojak stall had already prepared food for sale but had to dispose of them when NEA and Health ministry officers came to inspect the stall.  Both authorities are investigating. The stallholder and a worker were told to go for screening at the Communicable Disease Centre.
One stallholder said NEA officers also inspected every stall.
KERACUNAN: JATUH, TUMPAH DARAH DALAM TANDAS
Oleh
Siti Aisyah Sa'id
SEJAK hamil dua bulan lalu, Cik Rosiah Samat, 38 tahun, sering mengidam rojak India. Oleh itu, beliau gembira apabila suaminya, Encik Musa Ahmad, 40 tahun, membelikannya rojak India petang Jumaat lalu.
Walaupun perasan kuah rojak itu berbau agak pelik, Cik Rosiah tetap menghirupnya. Tidak sampai empat jam kemudian, Cik Rosiah mula terasa perutnya memulas, muntah-muntah dan cirit-birit.
Oleh kerana flat beliau di Lengkok Bahru sedang diubah elok, ibu empat anak itu terpaksa berulangalik sekitar lima kali ke tandas sementara yang disediakan di koridor - sehingga beliau jatuh di dalamnya.
"Saya mengalami tumpah darah. Walaupun sudah jatuh dalam tandas dan dipapah masuk ke dalam rumah oleh anak saya, saya tetap berdegil nak pergi ke tandas sekali lagi," cerita Cik Rosiah.
Sekitar 8 malam, beliau mengalami tumpah darah lagi lalu jatuh pengsan dan dikejarkan ke Hospital Wanita dan KanakKanak KK oleh ambulans yang dihubungi anaknya itu, Nur Haidah Wahid, 12 tahun.
Apabila sedar beberapa jam kemudian, Cik Rosiah mendapat berita buruk - kandungannya keguguran.
Ketika ditemui di rumahnya semalam, Cik Rosiah, yang masih lemah, berkata: "Mungkin keracunan yang terdapat pada rojak itu sangat kuat hingga boleh menyebabkan kandungan saya keguguran. Kalau saya nak ambil tindakan pun tidak berguna. Mereka tidak dapat kembalikan kandungan saya."
Anak seorang kawan Cik Rosiah, Abdul Hakim Abdullah, 11 tahun, turut mengalami muntah-muntah dan cirit-birit tetapi dia diberi rawatan di rumah. Akibat pengalaman ngeri itu, Cik Rosiah kini "tidak boleh pandang langsung rojak India".
"Tadi saya nampak kedai India dan ingin beli makanan, tetapi bila teringat kejadian itu saya tidak jadi beli. Bukan saja tidak boleh telan, pandang makanan di kedai India pun buat saya fobia," ujarnya.
kesian..sedih part keguguran ni
Enforcement regime at hawker centres to be stepped up
By Hasnita A Majid, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 10 April 2009 2258 hrs
SINGAPORE: The National Environment Agency (NEA) will step up its enforcement regime at hawker centres to ensure there are no more lapses in hygiene standards -- which the Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim says can never be compromised.
During a visit to the Geylang Serai market on Friday, Dr Yaacob also stressed he found the recent spate of food poisoning at the Geylang Serai market "outrageous" and "unacceptable".
Dr Yaacob had returned Friday afternoon from an official trip to the Middle East. During the trip, Dr Yaacob received daily briefs from NEA officers on the situation in Singapore.
He said thousands eat out daily and the food poisoning episode can undermine public confidence in hawkers and hawker centres.
He said: "NEA cannot tolerate any sort of lapses. It is totally unacceptable as far as we are concerned. And the government will get to the bottom of this and hold those who are accountable, those who are responsible for this."
Dr Yaacob hopes this will be a wake-up call for all hawkers to improve hygiene standards.
On NEA's part, it has stepped up enforcement action on hawker centres and temporary markets.
This includes conducting more frequent checks on food stalls and for the Geylang Serai market -- getting rid of the rodent problem.
Director-general of public health at NEA, Khoo Seow Poh, said: "We have been working with the management committee, helping them to make sure that the rodent control programme is working well. I think they have put in a lot of effort and our contractor has come in to help."
53 more rats have been caught, making it a total of 122 in just two days.
The NEA says that besides the Geylang Serai temporary market, there are three other such markets - in Ang Mo Kio, Tekka and Queen's Street. But so far none has reported a similar rat problem.
As for the rojak stall which was the cause of the food poisoning, it will remain closed pending the outcome of investigations.
