U.S. Army Agrees That The M-4 Sucks

Ultimax is not an assault rifle. It is a light machine gun.

As for Sabre, I think its is the same thing as Colt. Just like Toyota Vios made in Thailand verse Vios made in China.

If indeed the improved mag described earlier cuts down jamming by half, then M4 is a great weapon that beats Styer. M4 is much simpler and won't overheat as much as Styer.  Jam you can fix quickly on the spot but over heating will take some time to recover.

Sabre is not the same as Colt, they are totally unrelated. Sabre parts (upper, lower receiver and barrels) are made in house. Sabre actually uses a better grade of steel for their barrels.

As for magazines, I don't know why the army can't just use pmags.

Famed Colt M4 still blazing away at its US plant
MARHALIM ABAS
Monday, December 21st, 2009 10:53:00
Colt Defence

TOUR: Inside the Colt Defence LLC factory

The Malay Mail was at the United States Colt plant of the Malaysian Armed Forces standard issue M4 Carbines, following criticisms over moves to locally assemble and produce the firearm, said to be outdated, even defective.

Colt cited market dominance behind the potshots at the 5.56mm weapon that revived its fortunes after winning a US military contract in 1996. Its exclusive manufacturing rights ended mid-2009.

Marhalim Abas had a peek at what could be a blueprint of a future Malaysian firearm industry revival. Here’s the inside story.

If not for the blonde or braided hair of its workers, it is no different from any machine shop in Malaysia!

That is not to say that the Colt plant is outdated as millions have been invested on state-of-the-art equipment.

Some of the old machines used to make M16 rifles — the previous US military standard weapon — are still soldiering on beside the hi-tech measuring gizmos used to ensure parts are machined down to the exact milimetre.

New machines were still being installed at the 26,687-square metre plant as The Malay Mail was shown around by Colt Defence executive vicepresident James R. Battaglini.

It takes 3 1/2 hours to complete a single M4 and the plant can churn out 900 a day with options for more when required.

The finished product then go below the plant for the test-firing process to ensure it performed to specifications.

Colt boasts a record of every gun made so that if it does not perform well, the company can determine if it is made to specs.

On top of this, on-site US government representatives pick out a number of M4s from every 1,000 finished units for endurance, cyclic rate and inter-changeability tests.

Statistics based on some 573,000 units tested showed only seven stoppages from 8.4 million rounds fired, and no cyclic rate test and interchangeability failure.

The Colt name has been synonymous with firearms since 173 years ago when Samuel Colt built his first plant in Paterson, New Jersey to manufacture the revolver, a firearm he designed while serving as a sailor.

Sam Colt's success story began with the issuance of the US patent in 1836 for the Colt revolver equipped with a revolving cylinder containing five or six bullets. Prior to Colt’s invention, only one and two-barrel flintlock pistols were available.

In the years that followed, more than 30 million revolvers, pistols, and rifles bearing the Colt name were produced, almost all of them in plants located in Hartford, Connecticut.

By the time he died in 1862, at the age of 47, his company had produced more than 400,000 guns making him one of the richest US businessman at the time and he left an estate worth reportedly US$15 million (RM60 million).

Following his death, Colt's Manufacturing Company continued to come up with new products, including the Single Action Army Model 1873 revolver, Colt .45 semiautomatic pistol, Colt M1911 .45 — the standard issue pistol of the US military from 1911 to 1985, M16 series of assault rifles which it started to manufacture in 1963
after obtaining the rights from the original developer.

In 1992, the company went bankrupt and only emerged from the ordeal in September, 1994. Two years later, its revival begun when it won a contract to produce 16,000 M4s for the US military. In 1998, it solidified its position by winning the contract as the exclusive supplier of the M4 to the US government.

On its civil side, the strong revival for its pistol and revolver lines has turned Colt into one of the America's biggest firearms company as it was about a century ago.

FN produces M16A4 for the marines (20in barrel). Colt produces the M4 and M4A1(both 14.5 barrel , A1 has heavy barrel and full auto) for everyone else. From what I have read, the malaysian gov purchased M4A1 carbines.

Norinco does make a copy.  M4 and M16 patents expired long ago ,anyone can legally make a copy.
