FDA Tightens Restrictions on Accutane
TUESDAY, Nov. 23 (HealthDayNews) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that it has set up a national registry to follow women of childbearing age who are prescribed the acne drug Accutane, which has been shown to cause serious birth defects.
The agency followed the suggestions of an expert advisory panel, which in February said the agency should track women who could become pregnant while taking the drug. Accutane, generically known as isotretinoin, is known to cause brain and heart damage in the fetuses of women who use the drug, even in small amounts.
The move comes amid allegations by some critics that the agency hasn't worked hard enough to protect the public against the harms caused by some drugs, including Accutane, after they have been approved.
Under changes to the drug's tougher risk minimization plan, women must document a negative pregnancy test before they are able to obtain the drug. The national registry will track each woman's name, prescribing doctor, and pharmacy that dispensed the medication, the FDA said in a statement.
The registration system will incorporate patient and physician codes that will protect the privacy of both, the agency said.
Last week, Accutane was singled out by FDA safety reviewer Dr. David Graham as one of five drugs still on the market that posed health dangers like Vioxx, the now-withdrawn arthritis medication. Graham was an early critic of Vioxx, which was withdrawn by Merck & Co in September after the company's own research cited an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
In testimony on Nov. 18 before the Senate Finance Committee, Graham said Accutane was similarly dangerous and should be "seriously looked at."
The FDA's new Accutane rules include provisions for providing ongoing patient education about the drug's potential risks. Accutane has been shown to cause mental retardation and physical birth defects, including cleft lip and palate. The risks continue for about a month after a patient discontinues the drug.
Since 1982, when the drug was first introduced, the FDA has had more than 2,000 reports of women becoming pregnant while taking the drug. Most had an abortion, some gave birth to healthy babies, but more than 160 babies were born with Accutane-related defects.
The FDA instituted a voluntary testing and contraceptive education program in 2001 for patients considering the drug.

O.K...I bought it(Retin A) last night..
But after read the instruction sheet(I think), accordingly it is a treatment for acne...just out of curious that is it for
1. New acne that *occurs* or
2. New acne + blackhead + scars(*never mentioned in the instruction sheet*) ? or
it need others products to use as in conjunction with Retin A to get great result ?
What to use in daylight if the Retin A only use at night(bed-time)..?
Does OXY 5 OK ? |

retin A.... pakai skali je sehari... takut overdose vit A...
p/s: jgn makan vit A kalau apply vit A (retin-A)

Biar ice clarify sikit ya..kalau lara nak info yg panjang, lara
boleh carik dlm reputable medical websites di internet nie..
[penerangan dekat instruction sheetnya pun kinda panjang gaks]
Ini apa yg ice faham selepas baca-baca utk pengetahuan diri,
Retin A nie or Tretinoin ni menyebabkan skin changes.
utk org yg ada acne, ia reprogram oil glands dan kurangkan
blackheads n whiteheads. For ppl with mature skin pulak,
you get even skin tone + smoother skin & fewer wrinkles.
It works by unclogging kita punyer pori-pori ni. Utk jerawat
yg mmg sedia ada, dia mempercepatkan jerawat tu masak - ni
kiter cakap dlm bahasa mudahlah yer. Lagi satu it increases cell
turnover so new cells replace the cells of existing pimples
dan juga mengelakkan new pimples from forming.
Jadi jawapan utk soalan lara ialah yg nombor 2 tu which is acne
+ blackheads + whiteheads. Ice sebagai pengguna can identify
with that kerana mmg itulah yg ice experience.
Kalau malam pakai Retin, siang boleh pakai barang yg ada AHA sbb
Retin nie kan buatkan kulit kita menggelupas sket so wearing
AHA di waktu siang can keep the skin smooth. Ttp siang jerlah
coz AHA n Retin takleh campur kan..Kalau you dah jumpa sun protection
yg tak clog your pores n causing pimples betta u pakailah coz
retin a tingkat kan photosensitivity..
Itu jer lah yg ice dpt tolong..itupun bukan medical advice..
just sharing apa yg ice tahu saja coz i'm using it too
n i need to know how it works kan.. |

Terlupa nak tambahlah lara..bila guna retin, you have to use a
very mild & gentle cleanser. My doctor dulu suruh ice pakai Cetaphil.
Some tips utk kita yg pakai Retin nie..
Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, it is especially important to avoid using the following skin products on the same area as tretinoin:
- Any other topical acne product or skin product containing a peeling agent (such as benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, salicylic acid, or sulfur)
- Hair products that are irritating, such as permanents or hair removal products
- Skin products that cause sensitivity to the sun, such as those containing spices or limes
- Skin products containing a large amount of alcohol, such as astringents, shaving creams, or after-shave lotions
- Skin products that are too drying or abrasive, such as some cosmetics, soaps, or skin cleansers
Using these products along with tretinoin may cause mild to severe irritation of the skin. Although skin irritation can occur, some doctors sometimes allow benzoyl peroxide to be used with tretinoin to treat acne. Usually tretinoin is applied at night so that it does not cause a problem with any other topical products that you might use during the day. Check with your doctor before using topical medicines with tretinoin.

ha`ah lar..ludo takleh pakai retin a tiap2 ari..kena selang2..sebab bila cuci muka rasa pedih jerk...pas2 kat tapak tangan mengelupas (sebab letak krim tu b4 letak kat muke)..tp krim ni mmg kena pakai nipis je tau ... sbb kalau kita pakai banyak..effect dia tak akan cepat pun..sama je dgn pemakaian yg nipis... |
