Villa on fire as Valencia beat Sevilla
Valencia moved to fourth and only two points off Sevilla after beating the second-placed La Liga side 2-0 at the Mestalla. David Villa scored both, the second a penalty after he was brought down by German defender Andreas Hinkel, who was sent off.
The game started quietly enough and only really sparked to life when Villa played a delightful one-two with Carlos Marchena before deftly lobbing over David Cobeno for 1-0 on 27 minutes. Sevilla tried to hit back immediately, Jesus Navas with a driving run and shot saved by Santiago Canizares and then Luis Fabiano denied a penalty when he was pushed in the back by Miguel when trying to take the ball on his chest on the half hour.
Two minutes later, however, he was not so lucky, adjudged to have tripped Navas while he took the ball in the right hand side of the area. Enzo Maresco stood up to take the spot kick but - despite getting decent power and elevation on it - the shot was just to Canizares' right and at a good height to be parried onto the post.
Villa had two more chances before the break, one where he cheekily nutmegged his marker before trying to chip Cobeno but falling just over the bar and another where Cobeno got to Roberto Ayala's header from a corner just before the Spain striker.
Sevilla's notorious defender Javi Navarro gave a two-minute cameo to his hard-man reputation when he put an elbow into Villa's face on the edge of the box - which he got away with - before receiving yellow for a cynical tug on David Silva.
The match was effectively over as a contest three minutes after the break when Villa burst into the box to latch onto a Joaquin through ball and was brought down from behind by Hinkel who, as the last man, was rightly dismissed.
Villa despatched the spot-kick with aplomb, low and soft into the bottom right with a dummy for effect.
Sevilla tried manfully to claw something back but were always up against it and the game quickly became the David Villa show as he tried to get his hat-trick by whatever means possible, including a long-range lob and several attempts straight from the corner spot.
Joqauin and Fernando Morientes also went close on a few occasions but the scoreline did not change and Valencia move fourth, one point behind third-placed Real Madrid, who they face next weekend without Carlos Marchena, who will be suspended after picking up another booking.

Real, Valencia look for knockout blow at Bernabeu
MADRID, April 19 (Reuters) - Primera Liga heavyweights Real Madrid and Valencia meet at the Bernabeu on Saturday knowing a win would be a major psychological blow in the title race.
Third-placed Real have 54 points, one ahead of Valencia who are fourth with eight games left, but they need to bounce back from Saturday's painful 2-1 defeat at Racing Santander.
Valencia enter the game in high spirits having swept aside second-placed Sevilla 2-0 at home last Sunday.
Their inconsistencies can be blamed in part on a Champions League campaign where they proved they have a squad to compete at the highest levels.
Valencia have managed just two points from their last five away games and have not strung together back-to-back league wins since mid-January.
'First we need to focus on securing a Champions League place and then, depending on what the teams above us are doing, we can worry about the title,' said Valencia defender Miguel.
Clashes between the teams have a history of controversy that will make life difficult for the match officials, particularly after a week dominated by debate over the integrity of referees.
Real's sports director Predrag Mijatovic and Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores are to be investigated for criticisms of recent refereeing decisions against their sides.
Real's defeat to Racing, courtesy of two late penalties, was their first in nine league outings. |
