Raima demonstrates her karate kicks in HTPL
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, February 21, 2007]
Many would get the meaning of "action" wrong, but the "action" we're referring to in HONEYMOON TRAVELS...., releasing this week, is the one by Raima Sen. ...
While the film is a sweet and breezy romantic comedy, it seems there is just one comic action sequence, which is a flying karate kick by Raima! It seems Raima took one lesson from a martial arts instructor to master the kick!
Of course, we won't reveal when and why she does the karate kick as that would take the surprise element away! And we also hope that she didn't do that kick in a sari (that she's seen wearing in the promos)! |

In a radio interview to a London-based station last evening, Shabana Azmi praised the Executive Producer of Honeymoon Travels...., Zoya Akhtar over Farhan Akhtar! !
"I think Zoya has an incredible knack of managing actors. With six couples on the sets of Honeymoon Travels....., you can imagine what a task that was. I think that will put her in good stead when she embarks on her maiden directorial venture with Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor sometime later this year," remarked the legendary Ms.Azmi.
When asked by presenter Kejal Kamani on where Shabana went on her real-life honeymoon, she added mirthfully, "Believe it or not, I went to Pune [a small town in Maharashtra in India] and that too with two girlfriends! I think my hubby owes me one!" We hope Javed saab is reading this! |

IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, February 21, 2007]
Usha Bachani will soon be seen in Vikram Bhatt's forthcoming episodic film 'Life Main Kabhi Kabhi.' Though it is a cameo, she seems quite excited about it, because it's a fun movie which has a strong concept. The movie stars Dino Morea, Sammir Dattani, Aftab Shivdasani, Nauheed Cyrusi, Anuj Sawhney, Anjori Alaghbut but most of her scenes are with Aftab Shivdasani.
"I had a great time shooting for this movie. I know Vikram Bhatt from before so it was very comfortable shooting with him. Most of my scenes are with Aftab and he is an absolute sweet heart. The first day he came and introduced himself. We gradually built a good rapport. And Vikram is one amazing director. He knows what he is doing." |

"Haathi Nikal Gaya, Poonch Reh Gayi" - Raksha Mistry
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 22, 2007]
The lady certainly knows how to keep smiling even in adverse circumstances!
She is through with the principal shooting of her upcoming film THE TRAIN but there is one minor hitch! There is a dance number that remains to be shot and she is waiting for Emraan Hashmi to help her complete it. Though the young man is all game for it, there have been some reasons that are delaying the shoot.
First he was unwell during the talkie shoot of the film which was followed by his marriage. Later he was off to Bangkok to shoot for AWAARAPAN and though he came back just recently, by this weekend he is scheduled to travel to Hong Kong for the film's shoot. In the interim he was to shoot for the pending song but is now keeping unwell again which has again raised a question mark over the shoot.
"Aisa lagta hai ki haathi nikal gaya, bas pooch reh gayi", laughs Raksha, "Poor guy has been in so much trouble recently and we all are just wishing him luck to recover soon. From our end, the film is now ready and packed. Bas ye gaana aur shoot ho jaaye!" |

Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 22, 2007]
Any film maker would crumble under the pressure of a delay in release of one of his most ambitious projects ever. But not producer-director Guddu Dhanoa.
So when is the film finally releasing? "March 09 has been confirmed", he says, "The film is now ready and we are getting the final processing in place. I hear that audience is gearing up to see Sunny in yet another crowd pleasing role."
Tell him that the film's song 'Laal Laal' is a very pleasant experience and he says, "Yes, I have been hearing that from many people. Ustad Sultaan Khan, Zubin Garg and Sandesh Shandilya have really given their heart and soul into the number." |

When Big B cut off his ponytail
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 22, 2007]
If there is one Bachchan movie that is fast becoming a favorite amongst young and old, it is CHEENI KUM.
A light hearted entertainer featuring Big B in the role of a chef who is paired with half-his-age Tabu, CHEENI KUM tells the tale of this lead protagonist who falls in love with the young woman.
Ever since the promos of this film have come out, there is immense excitement building up amongst the audience to CHEENI KUM. Boasting of number of entertaining sequences, one such sequence shows him cutting off his pony tail that he wears for a major part of his life.
Later in his early 60s, when he is off to meet Paresh Rawal, Tabu's on-screen father, to ask for the lady's hands, he cuts off his ponytail to appear as more 'normal' and 'presentable'!
Watch out for the sequence and it is sure to bring on a chuckle or two! |

Local goons disrupt Dino Morea - Sheetal Menon romance
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 22, 2007]
The unit of Magna films 'Bhram' which was shooting at Gorai Beach was in for a rude shock very recently. A romantic shot was being shot between Dino Morea & Sheetal Menon at Gorai Beach. All the necessary legal permission for the shooting was taken and 3 policemen from the Gorai police station were stationed for security purpose but the unit was in store for a rude shock!!
3 local mafia who were totally drunk come and disrupted the shoot. They behaved very aggressively with the unit members and jammed the rickshaw on the Jimmy Jib and did considerable damage to the equipment.
They threatened the unit members and demanded cash for shooting on the Beach. When one of the unit members tried to reason it out, the thugs beat up the director's assistant Prasad. It was daylight extortion in the presence of the cops.
As per reports, instead of protecting the unit, the Gorai policemen who were stationed there stood there as mute spectators.
Instead the men in uniform told the unit to pay off the cash, since the 3 thugs were very influential. Somehow the unit diplomatically stopped the shoot.
The unit of 'Bhram' then went to the Borivali Police Station and lodged on FIR there, since the Gorai Police Station were hand in gloves with the local Mafia.
An exasperated director Pawan Kaul said, "This is simply a mockery of the system where people who are supposed to protect you are hand in gloves with the Mafia. Even though all the legal permission was taken, the cops actually asked us to pay up to resume the shoot. It is a very sad state of affairs. It is disgusting." |

Box office analysis
Exclusive By Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 22, 2007]
First weekend performance of latest release
'Eklavya' was never meant to take a phenomenal start. This was something which was even pointed out in last week's column and hence when trade seemed to have panicked at a 50-70% opening, it came as a surprise. Yes, what was expected though was a consistency in collections for at least a fortnight, unlike other biggies that start showing a drop after the first weekend. Reason? The film was carrying excellent pre-release reports and boasted of great cinematic brilliance.
This is why it was quite expected to see 3/4/5 star rating by most of the critics across different mediums. But as per the indications, the film has erred where it mattered most i.e. clicking with the 'junta-janardhan' in general. The film, which was unanimously acclaimed in reviews hasn't performed in a similar manner when it comes to word of mouth. The film has been labeled as 'wow' to 'pakau' which clearly shows that the audience is divided.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra chose a novel subject and treated it differently as well but somehow that thriller feel that the movie promised was missing. Each of the actors was very good in the film which made the film a decent watch but in the end, there is nothing much that a viewer takes which would make him/her give the film a repeat viewing.
The film has opened to an above average to good response but at the moment it seems to be on a shaky ground w.r.t. a long run at the box office. A fall is very much on the cards and at the moment, the film appears to be en route to an overall run ranging from average to above average.
Last week's movies
It was a dull week for box office at Bollywood. Total collections at an all-India level for all the movies in the running was mere 11 crores which is one of the least witnessed in last few months.
Out of this total, 'Black Friday' contributed most with 3 crores. Now this kind of a total is quite good for a film that featured 'actors' rather than 'stars', was based on a dark chapter of Indian history and came virtually unannounced! Anurag Kashyap's labor has paid dividends finally and though the film may be settling down as an average runner, it is a WIN for everyone who contributed in making 'Black Friday' the film it is.
Mumbai had the best collections coming in (as expected) and got home an impressive 1 crore +. Bangalore followed next with a very good 35 lakhs and the city has proved that it appreciates good cinema in a big way - 'Guru' and now 'Black Friday' pretty much proves that. Delhi was decent at 30 lakhs. 'Black Friday' is indeed a masterpiece and is one classic that would be remembered for decades and register itself in golden letters in history of Indian cinema.
In spite of merits, 'Undertrial' has a poor first week, something which doesn't quite come as a surprise. As pointed out in last week's column, the subject is not everyone's cup of tea and certainly doesn't make family audiences flock the theaters. Opening at 40 lakhs and now looking down the barrel, the film has a defining performance by Rajpal Yadav which in all probability would now be appreciated on DVDs soon.
From the past
'Traffic Signal' hung on in second week and though it took a 60% fall (at least 10% more than industry standard), it saved itself from a crash. With further 2.25 crores coming in for a film with a distinct theme sans any star power, 'Traffic Signal' has now touched 8 crores. With Mumbai contributing most (70 lakhs), the film is now a comfortable average runner and in the terminology of Madhur Bhandarkar, already a 'superhit'. Reason? He believes that to even get back the money for a film based on beggars, eunuchs, 'pheriwalas' etc. is nothing but an achievement in itself. In totality, the film keeps Madhur's decent run at the box office intact after 'Page 3' and 'Corporate' and now marks an end to his Mumbai trilogy.
After a mighty 75% fall last week, 'Salaam E Ishq' continued to fall, this time with 60% in its 3rd week. At mere 1.75 crore coming in and collections expected to be relegated to lakhs from this week on, SEI is a flop at 23 crores and would struggle to even touch 25 crores. Throughout its run, the film has fared best in Mumbai (and pretty decent too) and last week was no exception as the city chipped in with another 40 lakhs. The silver lining though is Govinda and Akshaye Khanna gaining appreciation for one of the best performances of their career.
'Parzania' started making headlines but at the time when the film has already released and got off to a poor start. Running at a handful of cinemas (25), the film got home a mere 10 lakhs further to make its total reach 65 lakhs. The film may just about manage to recover costs but that's about it.
'Guru' has sustained itself in an amazing manner as it is rare to see a biggie seeing a decrease in fall in collections with every passing week. A 15% drop is a clear indication that the film has been accepted in a big way now and is garnering great word of mouth. With around 2.75 crore more added even as the film is in its 5th week, the film is now sitting quite close to 39 crores. The film is the biggest success story of 2007 so far and should remain to be same at least till the Quarter 1 of the year ends.
It is now almost a ritual to go gaga over the way 'Vivah' has been performing tremendously in the small towns and cities. In the week that brought the film in vicinity of a 100 days run, the film saw an upswing in collection as the film moved up by 7%. Unbelievable! At 60 lakhs more coming in, the film is now at a breathing distance of 30 crore and should be crossing the milestone next week. A true blockbuster for a film that didn't quite cost a fortune for Sooraj Barjatya.
One wonders if even Sooraj, Shahid and Amrita were expecting such a response to the film. If Barjatyas had a strategy for release and placed the film in the markets in such a manner that they already knew how the box office curve would look, then hats off to them because that would clearly demonstrate that they are the veterans in the business and know how to adapt to the market scenario.
In the future
At one point of time, there were as many as 6 films in fray for a February 23 release. The current number? One. The lucky film? 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.' Aided by tremendous promotion by the makers and overseas distributors, this youth flick has caught on in a big way with the money paying 'junta', and should now take a good start at the ticket windows.
A caution here - Good start doesn't mean a 80-90% opening; that would be imagining a lot of things! But even if the film opens in a vicinity of 60-70% (which seems quite a probability), if one considers the fact that there are no 'stars' per se in the film, it would be quite an achievement and a win in itself. |

Farhan Akhtar misses chance to tango with Minnisha
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 22, 2007]
Not many know that director Reema Kagti approached her mentor and director Farhan Akhtar for the role being essayed by Abhay Deol in HONEYMOON TRAVELS.........
However, both HONEYMOON TRAVELS..... and DON were going on floors simultaneously, so Farhan couldn't play the part.
Incidentally, Abhay and Minissha Lamba got on very well during the shoot of HONEYMOON TRAVELS.....There were rumours that he had a crush on her, something the two laughingly dismiss. Though Abhay admits, "Minissha is such a lightweight. That made it easier for me to do the tango song ( Pyaar Ki Ek Kahani...) with her in the film." |

Meet the 'better half' of HTPL
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 22, 2007]
Much has been written and spoken about the various characters of the eagerly anticipated HONEYMOON TRAVELS.... but the one who has enjoyed far lesser newsprint is Vikram Chatwal. He plays the role of Bunty opposite actress Sandhya Mridul and calls himself "her better half" in the film's trailer! For those who don't know Vikram, in real-life, Chatwal is an affluent and down-to-earth wealthy Manhattan socialite, having led life in the fast lane.
He is a hotelier with Indian roots (and reportedly very close to the Clinton family), and is even rumoured to have been "good friends" with supermodels like Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss. Chatwal has done six films so far, including Ek Ajnabee and One Dollar Curry. |

Penelope Cruz wants to work with Shah Rukh
Sheeraz Hasan [Thursday, February 22, 2007]
Los Angeles, Feb 22 (IANS) Oscar nominated Spanish actress Penelope Cruz is very keen on Indian movies and says she would love to work opposite Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
Cruz, who has been nominated for an Oscar in the best actress category for her role in the Spanish movie "Volver", expressed her respect for the Indian megastar's great body of work.
"I am a great fan of Indian cinema and I would love to work with Shah Rukh Khan," she told www.hollywood.tv at the 3rd Annual Global Green pre-Oscar party held at the Avalon in Hollywood, California.
Cruz hosted the party with other Hollywood A-list stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Salma Hayek and Edward Norton.
"I love India. I have the rights to a book and we are going to shoot the movie in India," she added.
Cruz will play the lead in the English-language film, which is a screen adaptation of Javier Moro's original novel "Pasion India".
Moro's book was inspired by the true story of 17-year-old Spanish flamenco dancer Anita Delgado who scandalised people in the early 1900s when she agreed to marry an Indian king, Maharaja Jagatjit Singh Bahadur, and settle in his native land.
Cruz has teamed up with some of Hollywood's leading men, including Tom Cruise in "Vanilla Sky" and Nicholas Cage in "Captain Corelli's Mandolin". She was recently seen with Academy Award winning actor Adrien Brody in "Manolete", a film that revolves around the famous bullfighter. |

Sanjay Dutt set to rock in music video
By IANS
Feb 22, 2007, 10:02
Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, currently in the news for his trial in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, will soon wow his fans by starring in a rocking music video.
Sanjay is set to feature in composer Anand Raj Anand's song 'Sheeshe mein main', which will be directed by Sanjay Gupta of 'Kaante' fame.
'We met at a dinner in Lonavala and I sang 'Sheeshe mein main'. Gupta was there and he liked the song instantly and said it belongs to White Feathers (Gupta's banner),' Anand told us over phone from Mumbai.
The rock music video has a lavish budget estimated at a whopping Rs.5 million.
'The song is written by me and I am going to sing it too. This is not my first song for Sanjay. I have sung several tracks for him earlier, including 'Ishq samundar' in 'Kaante',' said Anand.
Rock music is the latest craze among music lovers and the new video has kept this trend in mind. The video is expected to go on floors after a special court in Mumbai takes a final decision Feb 23 on Sanjay's application seeking probation for good conduct.
'I've got a green signal to record the song. Once I am through with recording I will give it to Gupta who is working out the other details of the video.'
Anand is quite impressed with Sanjay and says the 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' star understands the nuances and intricacies of music.
'Sanjay has a great sense of music. The way he reacts to a song shows how much he understands the minuteness of instrumentation. It makes the music director very happy. One can discuss music with Sanjay for hours. He is very fond of music and listens to international bands.'
'In fact I told him that people should start calling you Music bhai,' joked Anand.
Apart from composing music, Anand gives equal importance to his singing career.
'I have sung songs in 'Shootout at Lokhandwala' and 'Das Kahaniyan'. In fact directors of films where I'm providing music are insisting that I sing at least one song. My songs are designed to suit my voice. Usually my songs are high-pitched Sufi romantic numbers.'
But Anand gives credit to Gupta for his success.
'Sanjay Gupta is my real discoverer. He gave me a big chance in his film 'Kaante'. The movie didn't have any leading lady but its music was a huge hit and after that there was no looking back for me.' |
