Massa suffered eye damage in crash
Felipe Massa's Formula One career appears to be hanging in the balance following confirmation he has suffered some damage to his left eye.
Massa is currently in intensive care at the AEK military hospital in Budapest after suffering a skull fracture following a freak accident on Saturday during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Although the 28-year-old, still in a medically-induced coma, has shown signs of improvement after undergoing emergency surgery, it has now emerged Massa may have sustained eye problems.
If that is the case, and the Brazilian is unable to see properly in the future, it will mean his days in motor racing are over.
Professor Robert Veres said: "He has suffered some damage to the eye.
"We don't know if he'll be able to race again.
"I don't know (if he can return). It's too early to say about his future.
"We don't know the extent of the damage. Without an operation it's very hard to evaluate its function."
Veres also confirmed on Monday afternoon Massa remained sedated "to protect his brain", which has apparently experienced some swelling, but he is out of serious danger.
Meanwhile, Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo visited Massa in hospital on Monday and insisted no decisions would be taken over the Italian marque's direction for the rest of the season until the driver's situation was clarified.
"Our first priority is Felipe's recovery, Felipe's progress and so on," he said.
"Felipe's been an important member of the Ferrari family for many years, since he arrived as a kid, so we all hope he can come back soon."
Di Montezemlo added: "(Team principal Stefano) Domenicali has to think and make good proposals for the future.
"We don't want to wait too long for Felipe, but our first priority now is to find out about Felipe, and only at that moment will we take a decision."

Doctor believes Massa will not return in 2009![](static/image/smiley/default/cry.gif)
Mon 27 Jul, 04:55 PM
A doctor involved in the recovery of Felipe Massa said on Monday he believes the Brazilian will certainly not return to the cockpit of his Ferrari in 2009.
Surgeon Robert Veres, who told reporters at the AEK hospital in central Budapest that the operation on Massa's skull last Saturday saved the 28-year-old's life, was asked by media about the long-term prospects for his racing career.
"I don't know. It's too early to say anything concerning his future, regarding the race," he answered.
More positive were Rubens Barrichello and Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo, who were at the hospital on Sunday night and Monday respectively.
Fellow Brazilian Barrichello spoke with the press as he emerged from the hospital, and revealed that he had been able to talk with Massa's doctors.
"I asked 'as someone who has no understanding of medicine, how will he be?' The doctor said 'most probably he is going to be 100 percent fine'," the Brawn driver explained.
Montezemolo, meanwhile, said that on his flight from Italy to Budapest on Monday, he recalled similarly dashing to the hospital bed of Niki Lauda in 1976 when the Austrian was read the last rites following a fiery crash.
"Thank God the situation is completely different this time," the Italian said. "Felipe is on a good way and I thank God." |

Lauda: Schu should replace Massa; Ferrari testers 'useless'![](static/image/smiley/default/3doh.gif)
Record-breaking seven-time F1 World Champion-turned-advisor Michael Schumacher is the best man for the job of replacing Felipe Massa at Ferrari, argues fellow former multiple title-winner Niki Lauda – dismissing the Scuderia's test drivers as 'useless' and Sébastien Bourdais as 'a waste of time'.
Massa remains under sedation in the AEK military hospital in Budapest after being struck on the head by a spring – which can weigh anything up to a kilogram – that had detached itself from the rear suspension of the Brawn GP of compatriot Rubens Barrichello during qualifying around the Hungaroring on Saturday.
After being knocked unconscious at 162mph, the Brazilian's Ferrari plunged into the circuit's tyre barriers at 62mph and he later required surgery for a fracture to his skull in two places, was placed in an induced coma in intensive care and has since undergone a brain scan.
The results of the scan were described as 're-assuring' by Peter Baszo, the doctor treating Massa, adding that the São Paulista did not sustain any neurological damage, is now in an 'acute phase' of treatment and will not be re-awoken again until Tuesday.
“I think he's okay,” remarked F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who visited the eleven-time grand prix-winner on Saturday evening. “Everybody seemed quite happy with him. The hospital is happy, which is more important. I'm waiting to see if I can go see him again. If he is awake then I'll go.”
Meanwhile, with concerns over Massa's sight, doctors have revealed that it is extremely unlucky that the 2008 world championship runner-up will compete again this season – if indeed ever. That raises the question about a replacement, with the most obvious names in the frame being Ferrari test drivers Marc Gené and Luca Badoer.
However, the former has not raced at the highest level since 2004 and not full-time in almost a decade – though he has since achieved considerable success in sportscars with Peugeot – and the latter was overlooked by the Maranello-based outfit in favour of Mika Salo after Schumacher broke his leg at Silverstone back in 1999, and last started a grand prix in 1999.
Lauda is scornful of both – as well as of Bourdais, on the market again following his controversial sacking by Scuderia Toro Rosso earlier this month and managed, like Massa, by Nicolas Todt, son of former Ferrari team principal Jean Todt. There is, the Austrian contends, only one man who could adequately step into Massa's shoes – even if he is now 40-years-old and has not raced in the top flight since the 2006 finale in Brazil.
“I've no idea how Michael is mentally,” the 25-time grand prix-winner is quoted as having said by the Press Association, “but who else [is there]? Who is available? There is nobody available anywhere near Michael's performance. I was thinking about it, and there is nobody.
“[Luca di Montezemolo – Ferrari President] needs to take a decision. For the whole business of Formula 1, which is ill anyway because nobody is coming, he (Schumacher) would improve it by 20 to 30 per cent interest – but it is a question nobody can answer because nobody knows what Schumacher is doing. But who else is he going to ring?
“What do you want to do with Bourdais? I can drive! Honestly. Bourdais did not do anything in Formula 1 with Toro Rosso. He is a real waste of time. There is no way Ferrari would even consider him when he couldn't perform in a Toro Rosso against [Sébastien] Buemi. The problem is there is a lack of up-and-coming guys.
“The test drivers are useless, and there is nobody else here if you think about it. If he (Schumacher) doesn't want to do it, the idea is finished in the same second – but if I was di Montezemolo I would call him.” |
