Liverpool star can break Man U legend's record
RAFAEL Benitez believes Fernando Torres is more than capable of breaking a record held by former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Torres will run out at Anfield today for the visit of Newcastle having scored hat-tricks in his last two matches at the stadium.
He will also be presented with the Barclays player of the month award for February beforehand.
With 24 goals in 33 games since joining from Atletico Madrid in the summer Benitez claims Torres believes he will score every time he walks onto a pitch.
So far he has scored 18 league goals, five short of Van Nistelrooy's total of 23 in the 2001-02 season, the highest league tally by a foreign player in his Premier League debut season.
Torres is also on course to become the first Liverpool player for 12 years to hit 20 league goals in a season - something Michael Owen, returning to Anfield with Newcastle, never achieved in his time at Liverpool.
For Benitez, Torres' speedy adaptation to English football is a genuine plus.
"We knew when we signed Fernando that he had quality, pace and strength," said the Spanish manager.
"But I am a little surprised to see him scoring so regularly at this level straight away, it is not easy for someone in their first season in England.
"But he believes he can score in every game now and the sort of records that are being mentioned are within his capabilities.
"He has such confidence the prospect of scoring 24 league goals is within him."
Benitez knows Torres has become the key to Liverpool's ambitions for the remainder of the season after a shockingly inconsistent campaign.
But he admitted: "Fernando is not the perfect striker yet. He has things he can learn - and you cannot find a perfect manager either!"

MILAN, March 10 (Reuters) - Midfielder Xabi Alonso will miss Liverpool's Champions League match at Inter Milan on Tuesday because his girlfriend is having a baby, coach Rafael Benitez said on Monday. Liverpool, 2-0 up from the first leg, will also be without right back Steve Finnan through injury but Javier Mascherano is fit to play after recovering from a dead leg.
"Alonso's girlfriend is having a baby so he will not be here" the Spanish coach told a news conference ahead of the last 16, second leg. "He wanted to come if everything was okay but we couldn't wait so in the end we had to decide. I cannot wait, wait, wait - I need to use my squad. Mascherano is ok, he is fit and will be here." |

Liverpool boss Benitez: Midfield now built for Gerrard
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has revealed he's released Steven Gerrard from his defensive duties in central midfield.
The Reds skipper is clearly relishing the fact two holding midfielders allow him to bomb forward.
Benitez admitted: "Stevie now has the same freedom he had as a right winger, when he came inside.
"He's enjoying it because he knows he can go forward with no problem as he has the two behind him.
"The understanding with Torres is very good. They bring the best out of each other - you could see that with the second goal.
"With the freedom he has now, and the quality going forward, he is unstoppable. His understanding with those around him is very good." Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan is certain Gerrard's best days still lie ahead.
He added: "When I used to see kids with Gerrard on the back of their shirts, I used to say to the mum and dad, 'Good role model for your kid'.
"He's not just a good player but carries the burden of responsibility in other areas very well. I am a big fan of his. And I think there's more to come, definitely. He is 27, still young and is going to get better. "He is outstanding at the moment but his best years are still to come." |

Mascherano's master class in destruction
Growing up in Buenos Aires, Javier Mascherano only wanted to be a destroyer. From the age of 10, his father Oscar demanded he should learn the art of the enforcer. He did it so well that El Jefecito (The Little Chief) was born and ten days ago Liverpool paid |
