Lotus bid for F1 return:pompom:
Eurosport - Mon, 08 Jun 11:49:00 2009
Team Lotus has joined a list of resurrected names from the sport's glittering past seeking a return to Formula One next season.
The Norfolk-based Litespeed Formula Three team said in a statement ahead of Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix they had submitted an application to the governing FIA to enter Formula One next season as Team Lotus.
They added that former Lotus grand prix driver Johnny Herbert had joined as "driver manager and global commercial ambassador".
Former Renault, Toyota and Force India technical director Mike Gascoyne is also involved in the project.
The FIA is due to announce the entry list next Friday, with at least 10 would-be new entrants seeking to compete under a budget cap.
Others include a Brabham Grand Prix team entered by a German businessman, who bought the assets of the failed Super Aguri team, Lola and March.
Kuwaiti-financed Prodrive have also applied with their entry, if successful, likely to race eventually under the Aston Martin name.
Force India and former champions Williams are the only existing teams to have submitted unconditional entries, with the other eight attaching conditions to their joint application under the Formula One Teams Association umbrella.
The FIA has said there would be room for three new teams if all the current ones stayed.
However, FOTA and the FIA are at loggerheads over the 2010 rules, with champions Ferrari and others threatening to walk away unless the regulations are rewritten to remove an optional |

Formula 1 on brink of collapse
FORMULA ONE was in crisis last night after eight of its 10 teams confirmed they are to form a breakaway series.
The decision will cause the greatest upheaval in the sport's 60-year history.
Following a meeting late in the evening, the eight teams that currently form the Formula One Team's Association have all declined to enter F1 for 2010 after a row over budget caps.
A FOTA statement said: "It has become clear that the teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport.
"The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series."
The eight teams that make up FOTA are Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Brawn GP, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso.
Williams and Force India are suspended from FOTA and not part of the breakaway plan.
The row started last year as FOTA disputed the FIA's plans to enforce budget and technical changes in 2010.
Despite weeks of negotiations with FIA president Max Mosley, the two bodies have failed to find a compromise, leaving the sport in total chaos.
Mosley this week wrote to the FOTA teams in a desperate late attempt to end the budget row.
After a four-hour meeting, the FOTA statement continued: "Since the formation of FOTA last September the teams have worked together and sought to engage the FIA and commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone, to develop and improve the sport.

"Unprecedented worldwide financial turmoil has inevitably placed great challenges before the F1 community.
"FOTA is proud that it has achieved the most substantial measures to reduce costs in the history of our sport.
"But these teams have no alternative other than to commence preparation for a new championship, which reflects the values of its participants and partners.
"The wishes of the majority of the teams are ignored. Furthermore, millions of dollars have been withheld from many teams by the commercial rights holder, going back as far as 2006."
Double world champion and Renault driver Fernando Alonso confirmed this week that he would be open to the idea of a breakaway championship.
BMW's Nick Heidfeld insisted the row is creating a negative attitude towards the sport.

Formula One in crisis: Q and A
Eurosport - Sat, 20 Jun 10:17:00 2009
Eight Formula One teams have said they are planning to set up their own championship after failing to reach agreement with the governing FIA on next year's rules.
The following looks at some of the issues and likely scenarios ahead:
WHO ARE THE BREAKAWAY EIGHT?
Champions Ferrari, BMW-Sauber, Brawn GP, McLaren, Red Bull, Renault, Toro Rosso and Toyota.
WHY NOT WILLIAMS AND FORCE INDIA?
They have already signed up unconditionally for the existing championship. Former champions Williams say they had to for contractual reasons, Force India because they might otherwise break their banking covenants.
HOW MANY TEAMS ARE LEFT WITH FIA?
Williams, Force India and three newcomers - Campos, U.S. F1, and Manor -- have been confirmed. There are a number of others on standby to join but the FIA has postponed publication of a new entry list pending legal action against the teams' association (FOTA) and Ferrari.
WHY LEGAL ACTION?
The FIA says Ferrari, Red Bull and Toro Rosso are all contractually bound to compete in their championship due to existing agreements. The teams dispute this.
WHAT WILL THE EFFECT OF THAT BE?
By not publishing a new list, the FIA has at least kept the door open to the teams coming back. Had replacements been named, that would have complicated matters. However, any new teams do not have long to play with if they are to design and build cars from scratch. They will also not know for certain until the standoff is resolved what rules apply.
WHAT ARE THE FOTA EIGHT UNHAPPY ABOUT?
The 2010 rules published by the FIA which include an optional |
