Petrov replaces Trulli at Caterham
Vitaly Petrov has secured a drive with Caterham for the upcoming F1 season, joining Heikki Kovalainen as Jarno Trulli is ousted from the sport. Along with Rubens Barrichello, this leaves two ex race winners on the sidelines in 2012.
At the end of 2011, Petrov was left out of a drive as Renault (now Lotus) replaced both he and Bruno Senna. Recently, the Russian had been waiting on a slow sponsor before making any announcements, although replacing Trulli had become likely.
“This is a very exciting day for me,” he comments. “I would like to thank Tony, Kamarudin Meranun and SM Nasarudin for giving me the chance to join a team that made its F1 debut at the same time as me and has grown from one of the new teams to a serious force for future honours.
"The passion and spirit that Tony (Fernandes, Team Principal and CEO) and the whole team have to keep moving forwards is infectious and I am honoured to be able to join them and play my part in helping the team mount a serious challenge to the teams ahead in 2012 and for many seasons to come.
“I have been training hard all winter and am ready to get back into the cockpit and go to work. From what I have seen already, our new car is another good step forward from 2011 and now I cannot wait to see how it feels when we get to Barcelona. I would also like to take this chance to thank all my fans and partners for their support and their patience.”
Team Principal and CEO Tony Fernandes explains the decision:
"We have reached agreement with Jarno to bring an end to our partnership with him, but he will always be part of our family. Now we want to integrate Vitaly as quickly as possible into the team and we will do everything we can to welcome him in, give him a car he can use to showcase his skills and keep up the rate of development that has seen us go from an empty factory with just four employees to a fully established Formula 1 team in just over two years."
Petrov scored a maiden F1 podium finish for Renault at last year’s Australian Grand Prix. Had he not secured a race deal, the Vyborg man was also in talks with Pirelli with regards to becoming the company's tyre tester. The Caterham line-up change is the team’s first since entering the sport, excluding the brief replacement of Trulli as Karun Chandhok raced in Germany last year. |

Caterham announces first Russian sponsor
Following the recruitment of Vitaly Petrov last week, Caterham has named its first Russian sponsor. Sibur, the country’s largest petrochemical company, continues the partnership with Petrov which began last year; as a result, its logos switch from the cars of Lotus Renault GP to those of Caterham.
“We are delighted to welcome Sibur into our team to help them continue their relationship in F1 with Vitaly and now with Caterham,” says Team Principal and CEO Tony Fernandes.
“F1 is a truly global sport and Sibur’s investment in our sport is proof of the value F1 can bring, on a national and international level, so we are looking forward to working closely with Mr (Dmitry) Konov (Sibur CEO) and his team.”
Petrov entered F1 in 2010 and this year replaces Italy’s Jarno Trulli. |

Caterham signs Rossi as test driver
In addition, Alexander has confirmed today that he will be competing for the second year in World Series by Renault 3.5, the championship in which he finished third in his rookie season. In 2012 he will be driving for the newly formed Arden Caterham team, aiming to fight for the outright championship victory from the first race in Motorland Aragon, May 5th / 6th.
Tony Fernandes, Team Principal of Caterham F1 Team: “Today’s announcement marks an important next step for Caterham F1 Team and Alexander’s career. As our official F1 Test Driver, Alexander is a key figure in our long-term plans and the investment we are making in him now will help him make the most of the natural talent he has at his disposal. We see 2012 as an important year for Alexander as he will be combining a full calendar in World Series by Renault, a championship he has a very good chance of winning, with his Test Driver role and giving him the chance to take part in FP1 gives him the platform from which he can grow into an even bigger F1 role.”
Alexander Rossi: "I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to make this dual announcement today. My goal to be in Formula One is one step closer after being signed as Test Driver for Caterham F1 Team. I want to thank Tony Fernandes, Kamarudin Meranun and Riad Asmat for their trust in me and long term commitment to my career. The Caterham F1 Team support, coupled with the efforts of my management and investors, has brought my goal of reaching an F1 race seat one step closer.
“In the past year I have spent time in Hingham at the factory and built solid relationships right across the team. I feel really comfortable with everyone and am looking forward to growing as a professional with Caterham and acquiring as much experience as possible from Friday Practice, the F1 simulator and time with the team.
“Winter training has been very good as Pro Performance, Caterham F1 Team’s physios, are looking after all my fitness and nutrition, preparing me for this season and my next step to F1. I am fully ready for the task at hand. I have not been in a car since the F1 rookie test in Abu Dhabi last November, but have been on the simulator. I am very eager for World Series by Renault testing to begin next week and get down to work, where I’ll be running with Arden Caterham in the classic green and yellow colors. The 2011 season was good, but now I have that experience under my belt and I’m determined to fight for the championship throughout the 2012 season. This is going to be an incredible year!”
