Lewis had "made up mind" to leave McLaren - Ecclestone
Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone believes Lewis Hamilton had made his mind up to leave McLaren before his recent winning streak with the team began at the Hungarian Grand Prix in July.
Hamilton went on to win the Italian Grand Prix and retired from the lead of Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix with a gearbox failure. Ecclestone says that this success may have changed his opinion about leaving.
"I don't think Hamilton knows what he will do," Ecclestone said. "These last couple or three races he has been doing very well. Before that, why he was upset I don't know, but he was definitely going to move no matter what. He had made up his mind that he was going. Whether he has changed now a little bit I don't know."
Hamilton is currently being paid around £13m and he reportedly has two contracts on the table. One is thought to be for £15m a year with Mercedes and another is said to be two-thirds of that to stay at McLaren. The team has been nurturing Hamilton since he was aged 13 and he has been racing with it since 2007 winning the world championship the following year. In contrast, since taking over its outfit over from team principal Ross Brawn, Mercedes has only won one race when Nico Rosberg claimed victory in this year's Chinese Grand Prix.
The talk of Hamilton moving to Mercedes was sparked by comments from Ecclestone to BBC pundit Eddie Jordan on the grid of the Belgian Grand Prix. Talking about Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher, Ecclestone said "I'm sorry that he's leaving us not being a winner, because he is a winner."
This led to the suggestion that Hamilton would replace Schumacher and Jordan later told the BBC that he believes "Hamilton and Mercedes have already agreed personal terms and a deal could be imminent...Some weeks ago I said on TV that I felt Lewis was on the move and I had an idea at the time he had been speaking to Ferrari, which we now know is true...Bernie Ecclestone made it clear to me live on television on Sunday that Schumacher was leaving, although Schumacher later played it down."
However, Ecclestone has now denied this is what he meant. "I said I would hate to lose Schumacher. The reason for this was that I was asked the question would I miss Schumacher and I said yes. He doesn't know if he is leaving. I spoke to him and he said honestly I have not decided and he would tell me."
Schumacher has been handed a 10 place grid penalty for the Japanese Grand Prix in two weeks after crashing into the back of Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne following the first safety car period in Sunday's race. He has scored just 43 points, 50 less than his team-mate Rosberg but insists that he is still competitive.

'Hamilton to leave McLaren for Mercedes'
Lewis Hamilton will switch to Mercedes for the 2013 campaign, leaving McLaren after six years at the Woking-based squad. This is according to the BBC Sport, who claim that Sauber's Sergio Pérez has already signed as his replacement.
In recent weeks, intense negotiations have been taking place between Hamilton's management company XIX Entertainment and his two potential future employers. However, the decision has allegedly been made in favour of Mercedes, who now look set to part ways with Michael Schumacher after a largely disappointing comeback.
Hamilton, who is due to receive a larger salary at Mercedes, won the world title in dramatic fashion back in 2008, beating Felipe Massa by a single point.

Pérez confirms multi-year deal with McLaren
McLaren has confirmed the signing of Sergio Pérez on a multi-year deal, paving the way for the announcement on Lewis Hamilton's switch to Mercedes. The Mexican has impressed many in the paddock since joining the sport in 2011, with a trio of podium finishes this season ultimately convincing his new employers.
Pérez immediately made his mark by recording a points finish in his maiden Grand Prix last year, only for it to be taken away with a post-race disqualification. However, despite a massive Monaco qualifying crash, he scored five points finishes in his debut season and has bettered that in 2012 with six races remaining.
"I’m thrilled and delighted to have become a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver," said Pérez. "The McLaren name is one of the greatest in the history of Formula 1.
"For more than 40 years McLaren has been a team that every racing driver has aspired to drive for - I was brought up on the great stories of Ayrton Senna's many World Championship triumphs for McLaren - and I'm truly honoured that they've chosen me to partner Jenson from 2013 onwards. I've spent the 2012 season working very hard to demonstrate my potential, but I've always remained humble and focused."
Pérez went on to thank current team boss Peter Sauber, with his team giving the 22-year-old the 'perfect opportunity' to showcase his potential since joining F1.
"I am, and always will be, extremely grateful to Peter and everybody at the Sauber Formula 1 team for their belief in me, and for giving me the chance to race in F1. In fact, they gave me the perfect opportunity to demonstrate what I can do - and I'm now equally grateful to Martin (Whitmarsh) and everyone at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes for giving me the chance to take this next very big step in my career.
Despite admitting that joining McLaren will be his biggest test to date, Pérez is relishing the opportunity of working alongside 2009 World Champion Jenson Button.
"I'm under no illusion that it is indeed a very big step – as it would be for any driver – but I'm ready for it. So, while I'm still fully focused on doing my best for Sauber for the remainder of this season, I'm already massively looking forward to working with everyone at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, and with Jenson, who's someone I’ve long admired as a brilliant driver and a great champion."
Pérez move is on of the biggest in the driver market to date, all but confirming Hamilton's expected move to Mercedes and leaving a spare seat at Sauber.
