Fresh sales prompt MB-339 advanced jet trainer revival
By Craig Hoyle at Farnborough
01/08/06
Production line to reopen as Alenia Aermacchi waits for M-311 and M-346 orders
Alenia Aermacchi is to re-open its production line for the MB-339 advanced jet trainer, in anticipation of fresh business for the 30-year-old aircraft, says chief executive Carmelo Cosentino.
Announced during last month's Farnborough air show following recent interest from three existing MB-339 operators, the production restart will provide vital work at the Italian company's Venegono site near Milan until production of its new M-311 and M-346 trainers begins to ramp up later this decade.
Nigeria last month signed an $84 million contract to upgrade 12 of its MB-339As to the enhanced CD configuration, and the Italian air force has also shown interest in modernising several of its A-model aircraft, Cosentino says. The company is also "in the final stages" of negotiating a contract to manufacture eight new MB-339CDs for Malaysia, he adds, marking a successful conclusion to a campaign to convince Kuala Lumpur to boost its current MB-339A fleet through a follow-on purchase (Flight International, 3-9 January).
Cosentino, meanwhile, cites Australia, Chile, Israel, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the UK as potential near-term customers for the M-311, and forecasts a production run of up to 350 of the aircraft by 2030. Alenia Aermacchi's first prototype M-311 will make its debut flight in mid-2007, and production deliveries could start during 2008, he says.
Also anticipating a strong orderbook for its M-346 advanced trainer, Alenia Aermacchi has announced plans to manufacture a low-rate initial production batch of 12 aircraft to be available for customer delivery from late 2008, says general manager Massimo Lucchesini. The company will soon begin ordering long-lead components for the aircraft, which will initially be offered to meet Italian air force requirements, he says.

Skyhawk sale frustrates govt
Sep 19, 2006
The frustrations continue for the government as the sale of the country's air combat wing remains stuck in limbo.
It is a year since the government said the mothballed Skyhawks and Aermacchi trainers had been sold for a reputed $155 million, but they are still in storage.
It is costing the airforce $130,000 a month to maintain the aircraft for their sale to a US based company.
Already over $1 million has been shelled out to consultants Ernst and Young who are brokering the deal.
Defence Minister Phil Goff says the deal requires US State Department approval, but they have been unable to speed the wheels of US bureaucracy.
He says the situation is frustrating, but because of the limited market there are not other buyers on the horizon.
National's Defence spokesman Murray McCully now believes the government's announcement of a successful sale a year ago was just pre-election window dressing.
He says it was sold as a solid commercial arrangement with no hint of uncertainty but events are proving this to be not the case.
:hmm: should i say lucky v not buy? or should i say the NZ choose a wrong client

Mothballed Aermacchis A Government Embarrassment
Wednesday, 20 September 2006, 9:27 am
Press Release: ACT New Zealand
Mothballed Aermacchis A Government Embarrassment
Heather Roy
Tuesday, 19 September 2006
Press Releases - Defence
Parliamentary Questions released today by Heather Roy, ACT's National Security Spokesman, show that the Air Force was forced to spend $1.7 million from last year's operational budget on the retired Aermacchi fleet, but that the aircraft are not being properly maintained.
"Labour's delay in selling the Aermacchi fleet cost the RNZAF $1.7 million last year. Since the air combat wing was disestablished, the cost to the Air Force can conservatively be estimated at $8.5 million, but in reality, is probably closer to $12 million", Mrs Roy said.
"That money should have been spent on training, equipment and operational costs - not hoping for a sale which has new become an embarrassment for the Government.
"Government should reimburse the Air Force, so that our service men and women don't have to miss out.
"To ensure they remain fully functional, the Aermacchis are supposed to be flown every 14 days, but that is not happening. In the three months to August 15, none of the Aermacchis were flown that frequently, and four never left the ground at all.
"Instead, the planes just have their engines turned over, and deteriorate by the day. If this sale ever proceeds, there is little - if any - likelihood that it will result in a profit.
"New Zealand's air combat wing was disestablished in 2001. A sale was reported to be 'very close' in early 2004, but tentative arrangements with Tactical Air Systems were not announced until September 2005.
"Labour has blamed the delay on the US State Department's approval process, but in reality, the sale hasn't even reached the State Department's desks.
"The Royal New Zealand Air Force shouldn't be left carrying this cost just because the Minister of Defence can't close a deal", Mrs Roy said.

satu sesi = 4 bulan = 8 orang
SU-30MKM ada 18.. dua seat kali 18 bijik = 36 orang..
F/A-18D ada 8.. kali dua seat jugak = 16 orang..
52 orang VAFP (Very Able Fighter Pilot)
otai2 yang still dalam servis, tolak yg retired.. hmm..
cabaran jugak nak maintain tahap readiness ni kan.. |

Aermacchi MB339CM yang 8 buah tu akan mula sampai batch pertama dua bijik je dulu pada awal 2009. SU-30MKM pula dah nak sampai.

M'sia To Buy Eight Alenia Aermacchi Fighter Trainers
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- The Defence Ministry Wednesday signed an agreement with Alenia Aermacchi S.p.A of Italy to procure eight Fighter Lead-In Trainer (FLIT) Alenia Aermacchi MB-339CM aircraft.
The agreement was signed by Defence Ministry Secretary General Datuk Ahmad Latffi Hashim on behalf of the Malaysian government and Alenia Aermacchi by its Senior Vice President (Commercial), Franco Ferracini. It was witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The contract worth 88.713 million Euros (RM416.951 million) is for the the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) to coach pilots to manoeuvre new generation jet fighters such as F/A-18D and Sukhoi 30-MKM.
Najib, who is also Defence Minister, said Malaysia had chosen the trainer fighters as RMAF had already owned several Aermacchi training fighters, but were older models.
"So as a logical development, we are acquiring the same category of jet fighters with the latest capability and technology," he told reporters after the signing ceremony at the ministry here Wednesday.
"In terms of gadgets, sophisticated avionics, it means the technology is advanced," he said, adding that the procurement would increase RMAF's FLIT to 10 Aermacchi MB-339A.
Najib said without the FLIT aircraft, RMAF would face difficulty in training more pilots and enhance their quality to handle more sophisticated jet fighters.
The Alenia Aermacchi new fighter trainers would be delivered in stages from Feb to July 2009.
"But before they (RMAF pilots) fly the sophisticated fighter trainers, they have to train with the older MB-339 version because it would mean releasing Hawk jet fighters for operational duties," he said, adding that RMAF could train 24 pilots on the FLIT platform yearly.
Deputy Chief of Air Force Lt Gen Datuk Bashir Abu Bakar said the new trainer fighters would be stationed together with the FLIT MBB-339A at the Kuantan RMAF base.
