Also, the Chinese did offer Tot on the FN-6..well, its a small stepping stone for us, but still a stepping stone..so hopefully our own scientists and engineers wont waste this opputurnity
Frankly I am scpetical on China technology although their reverse engineering probably better or equally than Iran. China application on production sama macam style Russia dulu-dulu gak...buat banyak-banyak dan murah, tapi kalau rosak buang kat laut le pasal beyond repair.
But such an offer ain't easy to come by. Perhaps we could look into its technology and improvise to make it better as you said a stepping stone process. Asal jangan jadi "sleeping stone" lepas tu udah le!!! |

In my opinion we have to face reality. Only first world countries, with first world budgets can afford a first class airforce. Modern fighter planes are very expensive to purchase. They are even more difficult to maintain. Training pilots is also a very expensive business. Pilots are only useful if they have sufficient flight hours. To ensure sufficient flight hours maintenance will have to be very heavy, again increasing cost. In Malaysia's case, I honestly don't think it is within our economic means to have enough pilots and planes to give us any real war-winning capability.
In fact I see the gap between the RMAF and the RSAF increasing NOT closing in the next 15-20 years. I think that we should adopt Egypt's approach to Israel in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Knowing that the Egyptian airforce could not match Israel's air superiority, they decided to close the gap by buying the most sophisticated SAM's available. This would make a lot of sense in Malaysia's case. Buying a battery of Aster is a lot cheaper than buying a squadron of SU-30's. It is also easier to maintain. Training a SAM operator is also a great deal cheaper than training a pilot. In fact most US pilots say that their greatest fear is not another enemy aircraft. The last time a US pilot was shot down in air to air combat was in 1972. The US know that most developing countries cannot afford to give their pilots enough flight hours. It is modern SAM's that US pilots fear most. And Malaysia has perfect terrain for mobile SAM's. Lots of mountains and jungle for us to hide them in times of war.
Well, since 1973 times have changed. Now we have guided weapons and some with stand of range and quite cheap, like JSOW.
In 1982 Syrians SAMs were defeated very fast with no loses. Iraq 1991, Yugosliavia 1999. Passive defence cant work anymore. |

Yeah nice, but you got to be on the ground to plant that flag. You can have all the air but if you can't hold on to even Baghdad's Green Zone, you are never gonna win. Asymmetry is a beautiful thing. |

Aku rasa kita tambah SU-30MKM dan Hornets lagi lah....SAM ni bagus tapi best lagi kalau ada banyak sikit fighter aircraft. |

Which proves my point that Malaysia's politicians do NOT take defenceseriously. If you want to snub the West, there are other ways of doingit without compromising our military. Mahathir could have giveconstruction or petroleum deals to non-Western countrieswithout interfering with our armed forces. In my opinion, the militaryhas the potential to decide the life and death of our country. It isthis kind of short-sightedness by our politicians that worries me themost...
Some note (on multi Billion / Hundred Million Ringgit Deals ) :
Previous railink was designed, constructed & commisioned by locals, together with Indian (Asian) partner. Next one will be India's neighbour; China.
Construction of KLCC also involving another Asian; Korean alongside Malaysian construction companies/suppliers (of which some of them maked money by importing materials only).
The long planned 2nd Penang Bridge also involving China.
That's not including other ventures in other Asian countries.
