Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told finishing outside top four equals failure
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been warned by the club's new chief exective Ivan Gazidis that finishing out of the top four signals a season of failure.
Arsenal succumbed to their third successive draw in the league against Sunderland at the weekend and now face a tough task to beat Aston Villa and Everton in the chase for fourth.
Insisting that Arsenal must remain in the Champions League, Gazidis told the Mirror: "Finishing outside the top four will be a disappointment for this club.
"The club wants to be one of the best in the world and it's impossible to achieve that goal if you're not in the Champions League. We are all disappointed that we're currently in fifth - we'll continue to fight until the last kick of the season.
"The difference between real success and failure for us this year is going to be very, very small."
Arsenal still have to play Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United before the season ends and Gazidis is more than aware that the events of the next six weeks are crucial to the club's future.
Despite his warnings however, the South African business executive, who replaced David Dein last month, has expressed his support for Wenger and is confident the Frenchman will commit his future to the club amid speculation of a move to Real Madrid.
"Arsene is a fantastic manager," he continued. "robably the best in the world - certainly one of them. [He] has always shown loyalty to the club, he's under a long term contract and I hope we will be in a position to extend it.
"I can't imagine any reason that Arsene would want to leave - I think he's happy at the club.
"We expect to progress in the Champions League and contend for that trophy, and we expect to qualify for the Champions League next season.
"The next four to six weeks will be important in defining our season."
Meanwhile, Arsenal are said to be preparing a summer move to sign Brazilian international Felipe Melo.
Wenger is understood to want to strengthen the club's midfield which has been lacking since the departure of Gilberto Silva and Mathieu Flamini.
Currently playing for Fiorentina, Melo has a buy out clause in his contract of over |

Wenger Hoping For 'Open' Arsenal-Roma Clash
Thecerebral Frenchman is enjoying the intellectual challenge posed bycoaching a side in preparation for the Champions League as opposed tothe Premier League.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is looking forward to his side's return to European action this week, not least because he believes that Roma, the Gunners' opponents in their last-16 Champions League tie, will adopt a more 'open' approach than some of the Londonders' recent domestic adversaries.
"I don't believe Roma will come for a goalless draw," the coach told Sky Sports News earlier.
"They will play in an Italian way, catch us on the break because they know an away goal will give them a good chance.
"We will have to have a spot-on defensive performance and score goals against them."
Wenger's men were frustrated yesterday in drawing 0-0 withSunderland at the Emirates Stadium, and have also been held to goallessdraws in their previous two domestic league fixtures. The Frenchman isconfident that that worrying trend can be reversed during the rest ofthe season though.
"It is an interesting challenge," he mused, ruminating on Arsenal's inability to find the net.
"In the first part of the season we conceded too many goals andscored high. In the second half of the season, we do not concedeanymore, but we do not score.
"So in the final part of the season the challenge is to find a balance between being solid defensively and good attacking."
He went on to insist that fans should not infer any criticism ofSunderland's tactics in his words, but rather understand them as anexplanation of the challenges faced by his side on an almost weeklybasis.
"I am not critical of Sunderland," he insisted. "We have to deal with that because that is what everybody does to us.
"They gave us a problem. We have to be good enough to deal with it.
"We want to be even more determined to punish teams who refuse to play.
"I do not know whether it is becoming psychological. It looks likethere's no common reason, but we had the chances against Sunderland -it was down to inches and their goalkeeper.
"I cannot fault the spirit and I believe we have to keep that as a strength and the rest will come." |
