Karan Johar slogs to perfect his ‘My Name Is Khan’ Updated on Thursday, December 10, 2009, 10:56 IST Spicezee Bureau
Mumbai: First impression is the last impression, says an old adage that is absolutely true in the case of Bollywood. And Karan Johar is one filmmaker who lives by this rule. Striving to get the first look of his most ambitions project ‘My Name Is Khan’ right, the filmmaker slogged almost for forty-eight hours!
With ‘My Name Is Khan’ all set to hit the theatres on 18th December along with Hollywood’s most awaited project ‘Avatar’, Johar is hell bent on perfecting first look of his film that captures the imagination of the audiences.
Grapevine has it that Karan has been working on a break-neck speed from Saturday morning to Monday morning.
Confirming the reports about Karan’s sleepless nights, a source told a news daily, "‘My Name is Khan’, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, is one of Karan`s most ambitious film to date more so because it is a subject that he has never attempted to make so far. He also cancelled his trip to LA to finalise the film`s first look over the weekend. He reached office early on Saturday morning to start working on the edit and didn`t stop till Monday morning 7am. He must have barely taken an hour-long nap in those two days. SRK too joined him on Saturday night and they had a meeting about how they plan to go about promoting the film. SRK saw some portions of the first theatrical promo and then left the Dharma Productions office early on Sunday morning. However, Karan continued to work and only left on Monday morning after he was satisfied with the first look."
When contacted, Karan Johar was unavailable for comment, maybe catching some sleep!
Aku dgr filem ni adalah the most awaited film in 2010 di Bollywood..
Si Karan Johar pula katakan inilah filem yang paling sukar bagi dia
coz pd awal2 pembikinan sudah timbul bermacam2 masalah smda
produksi mahupun pelakon..
Shah Rukh Khan dan Kajol filem (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) dinobatkan pasangan paling ideal dlm sejarah di Bollwood..
mengatasi pasangan Madhuri Dixit dan Salman Khan (Hum Aapke Hain Koun) dan juga
pasangan Hritihik Roshan dan Aishwarya Rai (Jodha Akbar)..
So aku pun tak sabar nak menonton filem mereka berdua ni wlupun aku ni
bukanlah 100% fans of Bollywood..aku nak tgk aura & powerhouse chemistry mereka ni..
aku x tau la aku je ke atau org lain pon rase...hehe
even tgk iklan utk iklan yg bape saat ni pon aku dpt rase chemistry srkajol.
camne laaa kalo da tgk movie pnoh nantiiii...
about the trailer-
The first look of Karan Johar's My Name is Khan will be unveiled on Wednesday night at 10 pm across all Star network channels. The three-minute promo will then be given to news channels and other media outlets to broadcast. The theatrical promo is attached with James Cameron's Avatar which releases this Friday.
about the movie-
The way Karan has handled his love story in a dramatised form is amazing. It's a love story where the character has to overcome obstacles in the path of love and that obstacle is the world view. How he overcomes that to win his love is what MNIK is about. The film is made on a large canvas and made larger with Fox coming on board. The subject material is adapted in terms of humanity in a very entertaining way. And with Karan, the best filmmaker in India today directing the film and Fox distributing it -- the message of love, the way it has been shot internationally and the way of releasing it, might have all the possibilities of an international release.

Mumbai: In a major coup, Karan Johar's My Name is Khan has been selected in the Berlin International Film Festival. What's more, the film has been picked for the Official Selection of the festival, which takes place from February 11-21, 2010. Karan Johar is jubilant. "It will be my first time in Berlin, and I'm so excited," he says. "Of course, I'll be going with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol! There's nothing as prestigious as presenting my film at the Berlin film festival's official selection. Even more than awards, it's getting eyeballs at such a festival that is important."
Not many Indian films have made it to the official selection in Berlin the last decade except for Farah Khan's blockbuster Om Shanti Om was - it was part of the Berlinale Special. My Name is Khan will play in the 'Out of Competition' section. Johar said that Fox (which is distributing the film), is comfortable with the 'Out of Competition' slot, as it fits into their international release dates.
My Name is Khan raises the bar for a Karan Johar film, with a love story layered with two key non-romantic issues: Shah Rukh Khan plays Rizvan Khan, a Muslim living in the US post-9/11, and he suffers from Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism.
"Regardless of the issues, I hope the film will find wide acceptance on the humanitarian aspect," Johar says. "Rizvan Khan makes very large points in the garb of simplicity and innocence. Only emotions connect, and they are universal, and I hope Rizvan Khan touches hearts everywhere. I try to raise the bar for Indian cinema with every film I make. I am young, I've got the infrastructure. Weekend box office numbers are no longer enough, I want to be acknowledged. My first concern will always be my domestic base. But within the parameters, we should try to reach a global audience by using our content, keeping the storytelling plausible, and syntax sensible."
As Hollywood major Fox Searchlight is distributing the film in the US, and Fox Star Studios in India, Johar had told the press, "This is the first time such a deal has been inked, where the film will release beyond the mainstream diaspora, and that is exciting."
As for Berlin, he adds, "I can't wait to be in Berlin, walk the red carpet, watch the film with the audience and interact with it afterwards!"
The Berlin film festival has already selected two more Indian films, Umesh Kulkarni's Vihir (The Well), produced by Amitabh Bachchan's AB Corp, and Laxmikant Shetgaonkar's Paltadacho Munis (Man Beyond the Bridge). Their selection is not yet closed.
MNIK is the first production of Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar together. Tonight at 10 sharp, Karan, SRK and Kajol will unveil the first look of the film that will then be beamed across 70 countries worldwide on the Star TV Network.
Says Karan, “This is a first in the history of Bollywood – that the promos of a film will play across such a wide platform. And, this has mainly been made possible because of our synergy with Fox Star Studios. It is my first production with SRK, and also the first time a Bollywood company is tying up with a mainstream Hollywood studio. So, there are many firsts to this venture.”
He adds, “The idea of the launch was suggested to us by Fox Star. Both Shah Rukh and I felt that it was the best way to flag off our campaign. We wanted to create a road block and since the Star network has such a broad base globally, we both conferred that it would be an ideal way to launch our first promos.’’
So wherever you are, across the globe, you can catch the promo of My Name Is Khan for sure. For Karan, MNIK is not just his biggest professional challenge, it is also an emotional journey. One of India’s brightest talents, he says, “Shah Rukh and Kajol have never gone wrong in their pairing. For me, collaborating with these two actors is not only a professional high, it is also an emotional bond. The three of us have done two super-hit films in the past – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G). Now, we’re hoping that we can recreate the same magic with My Name Is Khan.’’
The buzz is that MNIK is the most expensive deal to have ever gone through in Bollywood history. Unconfirmed reports say that Fox has allegedly picked up the film for Rs 100 crores. The theatrical trailers of the film have been attached to the prints of James Cameron’s Avatar, which is about to be released.
Trade specialist Komal Nahta says, “Never before has there been such an excitement over a film; nor has there been such a wide release for any Bollywood film so far.’’
Fox Star Studios will release MNIK with 600 prints overseas, making it the widest release ever for a Bollywood film on foreign shores.
