Bowler Syafiq stuns veteran Paeng for Storm title in Manila
KUALA LUMPUR: Back-up bowler Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek got a timely cheer for Hari Raya when he successfully defended his title in the 11th PBAP-Bevida Storm International Classic in Manila in superb fashion yesterday.
The 21-year-old Syafiq defeated Filipino legend and four-time World Cup champion Paeng Nepomuceno 237-227 in the stepladder final to win the title for the second time in a row.
Earlier, he had qualified for the stepladder finals by virtue of being the top ranked qualifier after completing his eight-game in the semi-finals with an impressive 1,923 pinfalls.
He is the third Malaysian to win the International Classic in Manila. Woman bowler Tang Joh Six won it in 2003 and followed by Alex Liew in 2004.
Two other Malaysians Kelvin Keong and Christyn Chew - also made it to the top six of the stepladder finals yesterday but crashed out in the first and second matches respectively.

Christyn failed in her bid to become the third Malaysian woman to beat men bowlers en route to winning a tournament when she went down in the second match of the stepladder finals.
She amassed 218 pinfalls but Paeng did better with 220 pinfalls to set up the showdown with Syafiq.
Earlier, Christyn had won her first match with a score of 211 pinfalls. It was better than compatriots Kelvin Keong’s 194 pinfalls and Pasut Punsanthaveekul of Thailand’s 185.
Besides Joh Six, Malaysia’s Shalin Zulkifli has also beaten men en route to winning international tournaments.
Syafiq was thrilled with his win, which comes just days before the Hari Raya celebration.
“This is certainly the perfect gift for my Hari Raya,” said Syafiq, who pocketed RM11,000 for his win.
“This win is more memorable because I got the better of the legendary Paeng. He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame for his achievements and it feels good to have beaten him.”
The win however did not come easy for the Syafiq.
“I missed one pin in the seventh frame. By the ninth frame, Paeng had a one-pin lead. I was so nervous. But fortunately, I had a strike to win by a close margin,” he added.
Said chief coach Holloway Cheah: “We did not send our senior bowlers for this tournament but our back-up bowlers have done well. This augurs well for the future.” |
