- Harian Metro.

ASHLEY ISHAM JAUHARI 2007 Oleh
Nazri Hadi Saparin

Wounds so deep he could see his bone
GARANG MUM v PARANG MEN

By Yvonne Poon and Eisen Teo
July 06, 2007

WANT to attack my boy? You have to get past me.

This was how an unarmed mother stood between her injured son and his three parang-wielding assailants.
Mr Mohamed Nazri Mohamed Alias, 22, was bleeding badly and lying on the floor, defenceless.

As the parang men were about to continue their attack, his mother arrived just in time to save him.
Standing in their way, she told them to leave him alone and to put away their weapons.
Realising that she would not budge, the attackers left.
By acting so garang (Malay for fierce), wasn't she afraid that the men would also attack her?
Mothers may well empathise with her response.

NOT SCARED

'I didn't think about my safety when I saw them attacking my son. I didn't care if I would get hurt. I was not scared,' the 43-year-old housewife, who didn't want to be named, told The New Paper.

Mr Mohamed Nazri was badly slashed in the attack at Block 37, Circuit Road, in Macpherson at about 5.30am on Monday.

He said: 'There are two slash wounds on my left arm. There's one on my elbow, held shut with 16 staples. The other has a V shape along my entire forearm, with about 30 staples.

'The wounds were so deep that I could see my bone.'
Doctors had to surgically reconstruct the veins in his left arm.
Mr Mohamed Nazri was also slashed on his head, abdomen and back. He had bruises and abrasions on his legs.

His head wound was held shut with staples, while bandages and plasters covered the other wounds.
When The New Paper visited him in hospital on Tuesday, he was asleep. His hand was thickly bandaged and bound with a splint.

When he awoke, he said in a subdued voice that he was still in a lot of pain.

'The doctors said I'll take at least two months to recover. My hand is a bit weak. I'm also feeling weak as I lost a lot of blood,' he said.
Despite his pain, Mr Mohamed Nazri expressed pride in his mother's brave act.
He said: 'She was my protector.'

Added his mother: 'I was worried about my son. If they had continued their attack, he could have died.'

His brother, Mr Mohamed Naim, 18, a student, recounted what happened that day.

He said three men turned up at their home just after 5am. Their mother was awake and watering the plants.
Said Mr Mohamed Naim: 'They were all around my age. They told my mother that they had a job for my brother. So she woke him up and he followed them out.'

UNEASY FEELING

But his mother felt uneasy after a while and went out to the corridor to check on them.

From there, she saw the three men attacking Mr Mohamed Nazri at the bottom of their block.

Mr Mohamed Naim recalled: 'She shouted at me, 'There's a problem with your brother downstairs, people are beating him up' and quickly ran towards the lift to go downstairs.'

He immediately stopped playing his video game, grabbed a shirt and ran out after his mother.
When they reached the void deck, his brother had fled towards a nearby convenience store to seek refuge.
Mr Mohamed Naim said he saw the three men, all holding parangs, leaving the void deck to head towards the store.

'When I saw the knives, I realised I could be in danger too,' he said.
When the store staff saw the injured Mohamed Nazri, they called the police.
As he sat bleeding on the floor inside, his mother dashed in and stood between him and the three men who were just outside the store.
Mr Mohamed Naim said: 'My brother was in a lot of pain and losing a lot of blood. We were very frightened.
'My mother asked the men why they had attacked my brother, and told them to put their weapons away.'
The men hid their parangs under their clothes and remained outside.

Then one man pushed past the housewife and kicked Mr Mohamed Nazri once before the trio left.
The police arrived soon after and MrMohamed Nazri was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

COULDN'T BREATHE

He said: 'I thought I was dying. I couldn't breathe. Inside the ambulance, everything went white and I couldn't see the medics.'
What had sparked the attack?
Mr Mohamed Nazri said: 'When we were in the lift on the way down, they were still friendly.'
But things turned ugly once they reached the void deck.
'They kept insisting that I had stolen their things... that I had taken one of their handphones from their homes. But I don't even know where they live,' he said.

The men began beating him. Then one pulled out a parang from under his clothes.
Mr Mohamed Nazri tried to flee but he was not fast enough. One attacker caught up and slashed him.
'Everything happened so fast. People around saw me and shouted, but no one came forward to help.'
Mr Mohamed Nazri said he recognised only one of his attackers.
'He lives in the same neighbourhood and I've seen him around. I've known him for about a month,' he said.

'I don't know how they got my address.'
Asked whether he was worried about his attackers returning, he said: 'I am a bit afraid, but this is my home. I have no choice but to go back.'

Police are investigating. No arrests have been made.

11-year-old US girl charged with drink driving

ORANGE BEACH - POLICE who chased a car for miles along a highway at speeds up to 160kph said the driver was drunk, hardly a rarity in this Alabama resort town.

But there was more.

When they looked inside the flipped vehicle with guns drawn, they found an 11-year-old girl at the wheel.

'You go up there thinking it's a felon you're dealing with,' assistant police Chief Greg Duck said.

The girl, who was slightly injured in the crash, is now charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident.

Mr Duck said she sideswiped another vehicle during the roughly 13km chase.

The chase began around 10.30pm local time on Tuesday when a patrol officer near the Florida line saw the car speeding west along a beach highway, Mr Duck said.

The girl, whose name was not released because of her age, told police she was on her way to pick up her sister at a concert.

Investigators found no alcohol in the car but believe the girl drank before getting behind the wheel of the car, which belongs to relatives.

Mr Duck declined to release the girl's blood alcohol level but said a blood test at the hospital showed it was higher than .02, the legal limit for minors. -- AP

Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC launches SMS alert service in fight against dengue
By Wong Siew Ying, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 08 July 2007 1948 hrs

Mobile technology has been roped in to intensify Singapore's fight against dengue.

The Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council has launched its S3minate project to encourage residents to report potential mosquito breeding sites by SMS.

On Sunday, no stones were left unturned in the fight against dengue as the grassroots leaders combed the Pasir Ris estates for possible mosquito breeding grounds and sealed up tree holes which might collect water.

Residents too, can play an active part, simply by using their phones.

The Town Council has set aside two telephone numbers for its S3minate project, and will respond to SMS alerts from its residents immediately.

The number which residents in Pasir Ris-Ponggol GRC can send their SMS to is 92338112 during office hours or they can call 1800 275 5555 after office hours.

Dr Ahmad Magad, MP, Pasir Ris Punggol GRC, Chairman, Punggol Town Council, says: "As soon as they spot any breeding area, breeding grounds, puddles of water, we want to encourage them to SMS the Town Council, who is more in the know as to which are the relevant authorities, the relevant government departments that would deal swiftly in eradicating this breeding in our neighbourhood."

But at times, compliance calls for stiffer warnings.

One pumping station at a commercial fishing pond in Pasir Ris was discovered to be breeding mosquitoes last week, and its operator would be taken to task.

The case will be heard in court on July 24th.

But despite the tough action, a pail and a pool of stagnant water were still found at its premises during the checks on Sunday.

And the National Environment Agency is expected to follow up on this.

Pasir Ris Drive 6 currently tops the dengue cluster list with 42 cases and 7 out of 21 active clusters in the North East District, are also found in the Pasir Ris-Punggol constituency.

But no matter where you live, the danger remains.

Teo Chee Hean, Defence Minister, MP, Pasir Ris Punggol GRC, says: "There was a peak during the following few weeks, this was in 2005. So I think NEA is correct, we should all pay special attention over the next few weeks because of the weather pattern, the rain, followed by hot dry weather which encourages the breeding of these mosquitoes."

The grassroots leaders are also promoting the awareness on protecting the environment.

Zainul Abidin Rasheed, Mayor, North East CDC, says: "We are actually working together with the Town Council for zero litter, to make the place clean, so that we can not only get rid of mosquitoes but also other pests. At the same time, we also got Sulo (a company specialising in waste management technology) to provide a total solution to modern waste problems to do recycling, to create awareness to recycling, to add to the clean environment." - CNA/ch

JEMPUTAN GIGIT JARIHidangan majlis kahwin tak kunjung datangOleh
Halifi Hussin

'Makanannya sedap, orangnya pun baik. Jadi saya pun memilihnya.

Kata nenek saudara pengantin, Cik Rohaya Amir, 50-an tahun:

Chairul Fahmy Hussaini

- NST, BMM.

'SAMI' MINTA SEDEKAH TERBUKTI PALSU

Man killed in handphone explosion
Fake battery may be the cause

Mr Cai's nipple was burnt when his handphone exploded.

IN what is believed to be the first handphone fatality in the world, a man in Gansu, China, was killed when the handphone in his shirt pocket exploded.

The blast had caused his ribs to break and pierce his heart, killing him instantly, reported Apple Daily.

The explosion is believed to be caused by a combination of high heat and a fake battery.

The victim, 22-year-old welder Xiao Jin Peng, was at work when the fatal accident happened on 19 Jun.

It was reported that Mr Xiao had his phone in his left shirt pocket when he started his welding work.

The temperature was around 50 deg C at that time.

At noon, a loud explosion was heard, and Mr Xiao was found sprawled on the floor, in a pool of blood. He died on arrival at the hospital.

Apple Daily quoted a technology expert who said that the blast could have been caused by a metal particle which had been heated to more than 100 deg C, and had come into contact with the phone.

Investigations carried out by Gansu authorities found that Mr Xiao did not use the battery from the original maker.

Mr Xiao's death is the latest in a spate of handphone explosions injuring users in China.

Last Wednesday, a Guangzhou man burnt his nipple after his second-hand handphone exploded.

Mr Cai Ya Di, who had bought the phone just the day before, was turning the phone on for the first time after charging it.

He was lying in bed topless when the phone exploded the moment he pressed the switch, causing his left nipple to be burnt.

His mattress had also caught fire.

The same day, another Guangzhou woman claimed that her handphone also exploded, injuring her hand and nearly disfiguring her.

A metal shard from her handphone cover was found embedded in her nose, and had to be taken out by her colleagues.

In May, a man in Dong Guan had his fingers burnt after his 5-day-old phone exploded following a 2-minute conversation.

There were also other reports of a Shenzhen woman who burnt her thigh when her phone exploded inside the handbag on her lap, as well as a Beijing woman whose handphone exploded after charging.

揗enantu saya memang seorang yang pendiam sejak dulu lagi. Kira-kira jam 3 pagi semalam, dia ada mengejutkan saya, mengadu anaknya hilang disyaki diambil orang.

揝ejak petang semalam menantu saya ditahan polis untuk siasatan berhubung kematian cucu itu, manakala bapanya pula menyerah diri untuk membantu siasatan kes lain,

'TAUKE HANTU' DAKWA DITIPU

- Metro Ahad.
