A decade after ISHQ, BABA FILMS bring LMKK
IndiaGlitz [Monday, March 05, 2007]

When Indra Kumar directed ISHQ [1997] for BABA FILMS, it was just the right beginning for the production house as the Aamir Khan-Ajay Devgan-Kajol-Juhi Chawla starrer went on to be a runaway success.

It seemed that the banner was destined for a way higher up in the industry circles as an year later it came up with yet another blockbuster PYAAR TO HONA HI THA which turned out to be second big success for Ajay Devgan-Kajol 'jodi'.

Just when it was time to pump up the accelerator, the production house went through a long wait before returning with an ambitious project TUMKO NA BHOOL PAAYENGE [2002] with Salman Khan. Directed by Pankaj Parashar, the film bombed and though BABA FILMS roped in Abbas-Mustan to revive their fortunes with Ajay Devgan in TAARZAN - THE WONDER CAR [2004], that didn't quite happened as this Vatsal Seth-Ayesha Takia film bombed too.

Now after a hiatus, the production house has arrived with their latest offering, LIFE MEIN KABHI KABHI, for which they have entrusted the responsibility of direction on Vikram Bhatt. A young film with an interesting concept about exploring love, life and happiness, the film stars Nauheed Cyrusi, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea, Sameer Dattani, Anuj Sawhney, Pinky Harwani, Anjori Alag.

A fun film, LIFE MEIN KABHI KABHI with music by Lalit Pandit is aiming for a March 30 release.

Jimmy Sheirgill wins BEST ACTOR award for BAS EK PAL
IndiaGlitz [Monday, March 05, 2007]

"It came as a pleasant surprise when I was informed that I was chosen as a winner of the BEST ACTOR award for BAS EK PAL", informs Jimmy Sheirgill who has just won this award in the recently concluded Fourth National Media Festival and Cine India International Film Festival - THE BIG PICTURE-07.

Held at Amity University Campus, Noida, the festival also saw BAS EK PAL being nominated for the BEST FILM.

"I didn't even know that there was any award for the BEST ACTOR in the festival. I was there with director Anand Kumar for the promotion of DELHII HEIGHTS and by the time I reached the venue I realized that I had been announced as the winner. Thankfully director Onir was there to reach the stage and collect the award on my behalf", smiles Jimmy.

With movies like BAS EK PAL and EKLAVYA getting him good recognition as an actor who can play variety of roles, is he planning to revisit his strategy of picking up roles? "Well, there are number of exciting films up for release in coming months that would project me in different lights. The going has been good and from DELHII HEIGHTS onwards, you would see me playing different roles in each of the films", he concludes.

NPD DVDs/VCDs coincide with film's release
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, March 05, 2007]

In what could be termed as the first ever instance for a film with A list starcast and decent credentials, the original DVDs and VCDs of Friday's release NEHLLE PE DEHLLA have hit the stands as well.

For majority of films, it takes at least two weeks for the original DVDs to arrive on the stands even if the film bombs at the box office. But in case of NPD the makers haven't waited for the box office performance of the film and have gone ahead with the DVD release.

As such the film has opened to a very poor response at the box office even though there are enough comic moments to keep you entertained throughout its 2 hour duration. If you are giving a theater watch a skip, then do check it out on DVDs for sure. It will certainly make you smile and laugh along!

Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, March 05, 2007]

Hrithik mania continues even as his JODHA AKBAR is still far way.

While his DHOOM 2 has just completed 100 days at the box office, he promises to stay in news and be close to his fans this World Cup. He has been roped in by TATA SKY as their brand ambassador and there are a series of interactive contests being planned for the users of the satellite services.

What makes this contest special is the fact that 50 lucky winners along with their families get to watch the World Cup Final match with Hrithik himself at his private theater! Now doesn't this offer simply sound 'dhoom'!

It's great to be appreciated for one's performance - Jiah
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, March 06, 2007]

It has been ages since someone has caught the attention of the whole industry in his/her debut film. The industry is unanimous that Jiah is the best discovery since a very long time.

Jiah has been appreciated for her sensitive portrayal, natural act and screen presence in her debut film 'Nishabd'. Even at a recent screening of 'Nishabd' organized by Mr. Bachchan, all the top directors applauded the debutant for her acting abilities. Shobha De has been heard raving about her while Rakesh Mehra too complimented Jiah.

Every reviewer and Trade Pundit has written in glowing terms about the acting abilities of the debutant. Not surprising, since Jiah has done her method acting course from Le Strasburg Institute, U.S.A.

Says an excited Jiah, "It's a dream come true. First to work with Mr. Bachchan in my debut film and secondly to be appreciated for the performance in the film. It's simply a dream." And judging by appreciation coming her way, Jiah considered by many as Ram Gopal Verma's best discovery, will soon be hailed as the industry's best discovery for this year.

Add to her screen charisma and acting ability an attitude to match and a true blue Diva is born.

"Nana and Bobby are bonding well" - Sangeeth Sivan
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, March 06, 2007]

"Nana (Patekar) and Bobby (Deol) are really bonding well on the sets", says Sangeeth Sivan, "now that's really helping the progress of my film."

Speaking from Chandigarh, Sangeeth Sivan who has two comic hits KYA KOOL HAIN HUM and APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY under his belt is soon bringing his yet untitled venture towards completion. "Around 60% of the film is completed and once I am done with the ongoing Chandigrah schedule, I would be just left with filming the climax that would take place in Mumbai", he divulges.

So is he still undecided about the film's titled? "No, we should have it finalized very soon," says Sangeeth, "we have short listed a few and it's just a matter of picking one from them." So is it going to be an action or romantic title for this much publicized DIE HARD MEETS YASH CHOPRA film? Laughs Sangeeth, "It is going to be an action title and most likely would be in English".

Shreya Saran's name came as a pleasant surprise since not many could see that coming. "Well, we were looking for someone who was not a very known face", he says with a matter of fact, "We were auditioning a lot of girls and she also went through the normal process of screen tests. She passed and soon was on!"

The film has been in news ever since it was announced. An action thriller with romantic elements, the film stars Bobby in gray shades with Nana playing a law keeper. Recently there was a decent hype built for the film when Bobby's jump from 14th floor for an action sequence made headlines.

Akshaye's journey across continents with Abbas Mastan
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, March 07, 2007]

That Akshaye is in control of his craft & screen charisma is a given fact with innumerable hits like Dil Chahta Hai, Border, Taal, Hulchul, Hungama, Humraaz, 36 China Town etc.

Even in some of his films which have not done so well at the box office, his performance has always been appreciated. In fact in the last decade Akshaye has got a good success rate in the selective films he has done.

He is amongst the few actors who have been repeated by his producers. Even Abbas Mastan considers him as their blue-eyed boy. Presently Akshaye is shooting for their 'Race' with Saif Ali Khan & Anil Kapoor in South Africa and 'Naqab' with Bobby Deol in Dubai.

In between both the schedules, Akshaye flys down with Abbas Mastan from the Dubai desert safari to the South Africa Safari.

Karan Mehra's celebrates holi after four years!!
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, March 08, 2007]

Karan Mehra was looking forward to playing holi this year but how it would start was something he hadn't imagined. A day before holi, Karan after his shoot was packing up to leave for home when the team of his show, Betiyaan Apna ya Paraya Dhan in which he plays the character of Nishaanth, asked him to wait to make some scheduling changes. And just when Karan was in deep thoughts to manage his date, they showered him with colour.

Karan didn't mind it one bit, because he was going to be playing holi after four years, with a terrible experience of coming down with typhoid last year. But this year, he was more than glad because not only was he free, his sister had also come down from Delhi to join in for the celebrations.

Looks like someone had a jolly good holi!

Mrinal becomes a naagin!
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, March 08, 2007]

Heard of being evil, but Mrinal Deshraj has seriously taken this one step ahead and transformed into being something more than humanly evil. Mrinal who recently finished shooting for her previous show Kaahin To Hoga on Star Plus, bagged this show in which she will appear for two episodes of Lucky on Star Plus, playing the character of Naagin in the main lead with Gautam Rhode.

But currently she is slightly pepped up because this is the first time she has gone for an outdoor shoot to Baroda. And that's not it, it's her bizarre look that one has to watch out for. As a naagin, she will be seen with gaudy clothes, painted nails and red lenses to give it a freaky look. Apparently now everyone addresses her as naagin on the sets. So much so that some on of them don't even know her actual name.

Waise bhi..What抯 in a name Mrinal??

Box office analysis
Exclusive By Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, March 09, 2007]

Even before the first show of NISHABD had commenced, it was crystal clear that the film won't take anything more than an average start. This was even mentioned in last week's column and it was a known fact that regardless of the actual credentials of the film, it was foolhardy to even expect people to be flocking the theaters in dozens. Hence a below average opening in the range of 20-30% was hardly surprising though some trade pundits have tried to term it as 'shocking' or 'disastrous'. What was disappointing [and again not shocking/surprising/disastrous] though was the fact that the film even failed to pick up once Day 1, 2 or 3 ended.

The film was well made with RGV targeting the film for a select audience. The trouble was that this 'select audience' itself was undecided on what to expect and hence folks didn't even turn up at the theaters. It wasn't the case of poor word of mouth. It was the case of no word of mouth at all. Result? A box office failure which may just about relive in its DVD version in months or years to come.

The other release of the week, NEHLLE PE DEHLLA, came virtually unsung and the opening was a testimony to that. Greeted with near empty houses, the film did manage to tickle the funny bone of those present in the auditorium but sadly these numbers could be counted on fingers. The film was never meant to be a classic in the making and it succeeded for most of its part to make you smile and laugh but the word was already out that the film was dated. Result was no one was not even interested in checking out what the film was all about and even a good act by Sanjay Dutt and especially Shakti Kapoor could not save the film from tanking on Day 1.

Last week's movies

Opening week collections of HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD. can't really be stated as phenomenal but for a small film like this, 6 crores is a good way to begin. Even though the film was a multistarrer, the stars in there belonged to the mid and lower range from box office perspective which made HTPL an expenditure-light film. Though the promotion of the film promised a much better number in terms of collections, overall it has been a satisfying start for first time director Reema Kagti.

What is noticeable though is that more than 30% of the film's collections comes from Mumbai [2 crore] which tells the tale that it has been predominantly a metro-centric film. Delhi followed next with 80 lakhs which is again quite substantial looking at overall collections of 6 crores. An average earner, it is expected to fold up around 10 crores but should have an extended innings in DVD circuits

From the past

EKLAVYA has been a bigger disaster than SALAAM E ISHQ if one looks at the acceptance by the audience. Even though SEI was rejected, it at least had a good first week total to give it some breather. But in case of EKLAVYA, first the film started shaking in the middle of first week itself and by the time its second week got over, it was proved to be completely down and out. Taking a mighty fall of 75%, the film got in a mere 3.5 crore in week two. In Mumbai, the collections fell from 3 crores to 60 lakhs while Delhi too was on similar lines with only 35 lakhs coming in after a 1.3 crore opening week.

This proved once again that if not for the immense hype and hoopla that director Vidhu Vinod Chopra made around his film while proclaiming it to be an epic tale, the film would have fared even worse than this when it came to box office performance. At 18 crores and just about managing to crawl towards 20 crore mark, the film is one of the quickest biggies to get a flop tag for itself.

BLACK FRIDAY continued to find reasonable patronage even in its 3rd week even as its collections slid to 50 lakhs. For a film that was first in legal mess and then had an extended problem with its release, it is commendable to earn around 4.5 crore inspite of Nil promotion, actors who are not your typical star material, no songs and last but not the least a director at the helm who had been stupidly called as jinx by many from within the industry. This real life conversion to reel life drama has worked perfectly well with its target audience and in the end has now started making money for itself after recovering its costs. An average box office runner.

It could just be another week or two for TRAFFIC SIGNAL before the light turns red for the film at the theaters. Readying itself for a DVD release, TRAFFIC SIGNAL only added another 20 lakhs in its 4th week to now stand at 8.5 crores. If one compares at the box office numbers of TRAFFIC SIGNAL or even CORPORATE with PAGE 3, they are quite low in comparison but the fact still remains that Madhur Bhandarkar's films are made at low to medium budgets and hence ensure decent profit for one and all through theatrical run. Overall an average box office fare.

SALAAM E ISHQ has managed to hang on even after at the screens for 5 weeks now. While it seemed that the film would be a complete washout after the initial euphoria, it was still running at 100 odd cinemas in its 5th week which is some comforting sight at least. At 24 crore +, the film still remains to be a flop though one wonders that if only the film's opening would have been slightly better, it did have an outside chance of being a coverage film at least. All this brings one to a pertinent thought that the lesser duration of the film would have resulted in more number of shows and less negative word of mouth that would have only strengthened the film's box office prospects.

Meanwhile GURU doesn't worry itself with any such negativity around it as everything has only worked positively in film's favor. With 80 lakhs more coming in and the film continuing to do quite well, especially in multiplexes during weekend, it is 'dhoom dhadaaka' time for Mani, Abhi and Ash. At 41 crores, the film is gaining from strength to strength and it can be assured that it would be the biggest DVD of this season as and when it releases. Ditto for VIVAH which again saw just a 20% fall and still got home 40 lakhs more to read 30.5 crores.

In the future

There are 4 films releasing this Friday - RED, WATER, SARHAD PAAR, 1971 - and it is certainly not the case of more the merrier for the moviegoers. Reason? Except for RED to an extent, none of the other films have much box office clout. For all its Oscar nomination and short listing, the fact remains that WATER is hardly a kind of film that is expected to arouse the curiosity of many a moviegoers outside select multiplexes in major cities. In case of SARHAD PAAR, it is the case of a dated film coupled with a subject that hardly works today. Ditto for 1971 where a not-so-enterprising starcast too acts as a deterrent. Don't expect any fireworks in the week to follow.
