ETA1: SPUR article had a full-page interview as well as a half-page filled with a few behind-the-scene stories by the editors and photographers. Following is my partial synopsis of the behind-the-scene stories:
Benedict would love to get involved in a Stephen Sondheim musical.
The photographer had 60 seconds for his turn at the photo shoot. There has not been a photo shoot this brief since Tom Cruise’s which had become an urban legend among magazine editors. He originally planned on having Benedict seated on a piano bench with his legs crossed. When Benedict arrived, however, he asked the photographer what the magazine was about. When told that SPUR is a young women’s fashion magazine, he suggested that raising his feet on a stool and bending his knees would be more appealing to women. When the photographer asked for “a lovely face,” Benedict came up with the top middle expression. The photographer was in awe of Benedict’s thoughtfulness as Benedict complimented his Hasselblad camera while shaking the photographer’s hand.
After work in Tokyo was completed, Benedict gathered all the Japanese campaign staff in a room. The staff members started to applaud for Benedict. However, Benedict stopped it, and said he should be the one applauding for the Japanese staff for the great campaign.
ETA2: Benedict on the community of UK actors:
Benedict has worked with James McAvoy a few times, is a good friend with Dominic Cooper who was at the same drama school for a few years, and knows Andrew Garfield well.
He thinks, unlike the rebellious, nonconformist-stereotype of the old days, current UK actors are serious about their work. They are pouring the energy (that could otherwise be used for rebellion) into work such as self-improvement and character development. He thinks that is probably the reason why they all respect each other.
ETA3: Benedict on his high school drama teache
Benedict still treasures what he learned from his high school drama teacher.
The teacher cast 17 year-old Benedict for Willie in Death of a Salesman, the old man who is the main character. Benedict credits this drama teacher and this casting for igniting his imagination.
