Singapore economy picks up sharply in Q2
Posted: 10 July 2007 0808 hrs
SINGAPORE - Singapore's economy picked up sharply in the second quarter, beating forecasts with a blistering 8.2 percent gain after an already strong 6.4 percent expansion in the three months to March, official figures showed Tuesday.
Gross domestic product (GDP) growth grew 6.6 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of last year.
Economists had estimated 6.2-7.7 percent growth for the second quarter.
On a quarter-on-quarter, seasonally adjusted annualised basis, GDP, the value of all goods and services produced in the country, grew 12.8 percent following an 8.5 percent growth in the first quarter, the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said.
"The Singapore economy registered strong growth in the second quarter of 2007," it said.
Growth in the manufacturing sector jumped sharply to 10.2 percent, led by biomedicals and transport engineering, which includes oil rigs and ships, from 4.4 percent in the first quarter.
The ministry said construction grew 17.9 percent, up from 11.6 percent in the first three months of the year, with services slowing slightly to 7.0 percent from 7.2 percent.
"The healthy performance was led by financial services," it said.
The figures are advance estimates for real GDP -- growth adjusted for inflation -- and computed largely from April and May data. More detailed figures will be released in August.
In May, the MTI upgraded its full-year 2007 GDP growth forecast to 5.0-7.0 percent from 4.5-6.5 percent.
Singapore's economy grew 7.9 percent last year, one of the fastest rates in Asia.

Setelah membuat pemeriksaan terperinci, Cik Nurmisha mendapat satu lagi kejutan.
'Mujur bilik adik saya dikunci.

Malacca woman complains:
Salon products ruined my face
(Above) Acne and pimples with yellow pus covered her face after she used them. -- Pictures: HARIAN METRO
SHE lost weight when she visited a beauty salon for the first time.
Buoyed by the success of the treatment, a 29-year-old woman in Malacca decided to try out the facial products recommended by that salon.
But this time, the results were disastrous.
It left the 29-year-old factory worker, who is only known as Ms Noraini, with acne and pimples filled with yellow pus.
She complained to the salon, but the staff told her that results would take time and that she should continue using the products.
She did as told, but that only made her condition worse.
Ms Noraini has since lodged a complaint with the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca).
Her woes began in January when she bought RM400 ($175) worth of facial products, such as toner, cleanser and moisturiser, from the salon.
She told Harian Metro that she agreed to use these products based on the salon's recommendation.
This was largely due to the success in losing weight after she signed up for its slimming programme.
It is not clear how much weight she lost.
But it is a move that has cost her dearly, said Ms Noraini.
Two weeks later, the results showed on her face.
'My face has suffered tremendous damage and attracted weird looks from others,' she said.
'It has made me feel ashamed of myself.'
She has since stopped using the products.
The salon told Fomca that it is investigating the matter and hopes that Ms Noraini will be patient.
An adviser for Fomca said that he will be writing to the Health Ministry to find out if the products meet safety standards. |

Supermarket worker drowns after truck plunges into sea
By Asha Popatlal, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 12 July 2007 2130 hrs
SINGAPORE: A 21-year-old Sheng Siong supermarket worker died in a drowning incident on Thursday.
Goh Chin Went was in a delivery truck that went under, after rolling into the sea.
Two other colleagues who were with him, managed to scramble to safety.
It was a tragic end for the young Malaysian worker.
The incident happened at around 11am in the waters next to Lim Chu Kang's Sarimbun Scouts Camp.
A Sheng Siong truck had reversed to the water's edge and parked.
The workers were at the back, loading fresh fish into the truck when it started rolling into the sea.
According to eyewitness accounts, Yong Chee Seng and Chua Lim Swee managed to scramble to safety by climbing onto the roof.
They were later rescued by a passing fishing boat.
But their colleague Goh was not so lucky.
Eyewitness Edmund Ching said, "Far away from my farm, I saw two of them on top of the lorry, but I couldn抰 hear what they were shouting about. I just saw them waving."
"Then I think what the two of them told me was that there was another friend, a colleague, inside... there is a tilt gate, so when the vehicle slid down, the tilt gate automatically closed up - so the victim could not come out of the lorry."
Edmund rushed over to the scene with his goggles. But by the time he got there, which was about two minutes later, the vehicle had gone from half-way down to fully submerged.
"I tried to dive down three times... I told them there's nothing over there so they told me to go further out... I tried to go down again, but nothing. By the third time, I couldn抰 touch anything because it's too deep already. Until now, we can imagine how the person inside struggled for help."
The Singapore Civil Defence Force, which arrived at the scene within 15 minutes, sent its divers down.
But a spokesperson said they had difficulty locating the completely submerged truck because of murky waters and low visibility.
Goh's body was found just after 2pm, wedged inside the container.
Sheng Siong Supermarket boss Lim Hock Chee, who rushed down to the scene with 10 staff members immediately after hearing about the incident, said he had never encountered anything like this in his 20 years in the business.
The Malaysian worker, who had been with Sheng Siong for about three years, was described as hardworking and diligent.
Goh leaves behind his parents and two siblings. - CNA/yy |

MAS launches new coins to commemorate 42 years of independence
By Foo Xiao Xuan, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 12 July 2007 1902 hrs
SINGAPORE: Coin collectors can look forward to a new set of coins - this time to commemorate Singapore's 42 years of independence.
An unusual setting was chosen for the launch - a tour of the Marina Bay aboard a traditional bumboat along the Singapore River.
The S$2 coins were launched by the Monetary Authority of Singapore in conjunction with this year's National Day.
The main feature is the NDP 2007 logo and the new venue for the parade - the world's largest floating platform at Marina Bay. The other side bears the Singapore Arms with the year 2007.
The coins will be issued on 23 July and sold by The Singapore Mint.
Said Jason Chen, Assistant Vice President, Marketing, The Singapore Mint, "We have decided to feature the floating performance platform as the central subject in this year's commemorative coins.
"We have also featured four children on the coin design. This is meant to reflect the multi-cultural, multi-ethnic composition of Singapore society as well as our aspirations for our next generation moving towards Singapore's future."
For the S$2 Silver Proof Coin, there will be a mintage of 8,000 pieces priced at S$64 each, whereas for the S$2 Cupro-Nickel Coin, mintage will be based on the demand and costs S$19.50 each.
Alternatively, the public can also purchase the 2-in-1 coin set, which costs S$96 for a set, with a low mintage of 3,000 sets.

PM Lee's son in NS reprimanded by SAF
PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong's son Li Hongyi, who is serving his national service, has been reprimanded by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) for not following proper procedures in e-mailing a letter of complaint to many other servicemen.
Second Lieutenant Li Hongyi had alleged that another officer from his unit had been absent without leave or AWOL on two occasions.
In the June 28 e-mail, which was sent to the Defence Minister and senior SAF officers, among others, 2nd Lt Li also stated that he had reported the matter to the officer's superiors, but no disciplinary action had been taken.
In a statement yesterday, Colonel Benedict Lim, director of public affairs at the Ministry of Defence (Mindef), said:
'2nd Lt Li was found to have contravened the General Orders of Mindef by broadcasting his letter of complaint to many other servicemen - almost all of whom were neither directly under his command, nor in an official capacity where they could deal with the matters contained in his letter of complaint.'
Col Lim added: 'He has been formally charged and administered a reprimand after a summary trial.'
The Straits Times understands that a summary trial deals with less serious military offences and is normally presided over by a senior disciplinary officer who may serve with the soldier's own unit or is appointed to oversee the trial from another unit.
Penalties include being warned by the senior disciplinary officer, forfeiture of days off or shouldering extra duties.
In the statement, Mindef added that following 2nd Lt Li's complaint, an investigation was conducted and the officers concerned have been disciplined.
The officer who was found to have been AWOL will be court-martialled and two supervising officers have been issued letters of warning for poor judgment in administering inappropriate disciplinary action.
A court martial, which deals with more serious offences, can result in a range of penalties for misconduct. These include discharge from service, detention in the SAF detention barracks, a reduction in rank, forfeiture of seniority, fines and reprimand.
Mindef issued the statement yesterday in response to media queries about the Internet chatter on 2nd Lt Li's e-mail.
Several sites were abuzz with details of the e-mail and comments on how the authorities would respond.
Col Lim stressed that the SAF takes a serious view of misconduct by any serviceman.
'To maintain organisational discipline, all SAF servicemen with complaints or grievances should take them up through proper channels for redress, to ensure due process and to protect confidential information.
'All complaints which are not anonymous are investigated and dealt with properly.'
2nd Lt Li, who is the third of PM Lee's four children, has received a Public Service Commission scholarship to study economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States |

Progress in mediation over payout for prisoner who was caned extra strokes
By S Ramesh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 13 July 2007 1819 hrs
SINGAPORE: The case surrounding a prisoner who had been wrongfully given three extra strokes of the cane came up for mediation at the Singapore Mediation Centre on Friday.
20-year-old Dickson Tan Yong Wen, who is still in prison, was convicted for abetting an unlicensed moneylender to harass a debtor.
He was given eight strokes of the cane instead of the prescribed five.
Lawyers from both sides said the mediation process was making progress.
Mr Joseph Chen, the Counsel for Tan, told reporters that the government was amenable to a fair settlement.
Mr Chen, who accompanied Tan's mother to the hearing at the Supreme Court building on Friday, also said that he was happy with the session.
Channel NewsAsia understands that a settlement amount being looked at is in the range of $300,000.
The two mediators on their part have encouraged both parties to come to a settlement.
The government is represented by Mr Leong Kwang Ian from the Attorney General's Chambers.
The hearing has been adjourned to a later date.
In earlier negotiations, both the Law and Home Affairs Ministries said Tan's family had initially asked for $150,000 in compensation but later raised it to $3 million to include punitive damages.
This could not be accepted by the government.
The victim had reportedly said he would donate $2.7m to charity. - CNA/ir |

Truck in drowning mishap could be faulty: supermarket
By Foo Siew Shyan, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 13 July 2007 1921 hrs
SINGAPORE: Sheng Siong supermarket said the delivery truck involved in Thursday's drowning incident in Lim Chu Kang could have been faulty.
One of its staff, Goh Chin Went, drowned when he was trapped in the truck as it sank into the sea.
Sheng Siong has promised to undertake all funeral preparations and has set aside a sum of money for Goh's family.
Goh was loading fresh fish into the truck when it started rolling into the sea, near the Sarimbun Scout's Camp.
SCDF officers took about three hours to find his body, which was wedged inside the container.
Family members turned up at the mortuary on Friday morning to identify the body.
It was too much for Goh's mother, who was accompanied by his siblings and relatives, who had rushed down from Malaysia after hearing about the tragedy.
Goh's uncle said the victim had been a filial son. The 21-year-old would visit his family in Johor every week and give his mother money he had earned in Singapore.
Goh came to Singapore when he was 18. He was promoted last September because of his good performance.
Goh will be cremated in Singapore and his ashes will be brought back to Malaysia. - CNA/yy |

Beckham unveiled as Galaxy's brightest star
LOS ANGELES - DAVID Beckham's bid to bring football in from the fringes of American sport began amid a burst of confetti and booming rock music on Friday as he took his first bow for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
'Soccer can be as big here as it is everywhere around the world, and I'm very proud to be a part of that over the next few years, and maybe a few more years after that,' Beckham promised several thousand fans at the Home Depot Centre, where the Galaxy rolled out the red carpet for their new star.
That is just what the Galaxy and Major League Soccer were banking on when they engineered the acquisition of Beckham back in January, when Spanish club Real Madrid and England had become disenchanted with the midfielder.
At the time, the deal that could be worth as much as US$250 million (S$378.9 million) including endorsements and merchandising was seen as a move to a football backwater by a player entering the twilight of his career.
Not so, insists Beckham, who has since been recalled to England and helped Real to the Spanish League title.
'I don't see this as a winding down of my career,' he said. 'I may not be 22 years old anymore, but I am as fit as I was at 22. I am as eager as I was at 14 years old.'
Beckham, looking dapper in a grey suit and tie, flashed his grin as he was handed a Galaxy jersey bearing his name and old Real Madrid squad number of 23.
He posed for pictures alongside Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas and his new head coach, Frank Yallop, Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber, Tim Leiweke - the chief executive and president of the Galaxy's owners AEG - and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
While Beckham has known for months he was headed Stateside, he showed he still has a few adjustments to make.
'The first thing in my life is always my family,' he told the crowd.
'The second most important thing has always been foot... soccer. Sorry, I'll get used to that, I promise,' he added.
Beckham said he hoped to dispel any doubts of his commitment when he makes his Galaxy debut in a friendly against Premiership club Chelsea on July 21.
'For me it has always been about the football. That has always been the reasoning behind every move in my career. It has always been about the football. I'm very proud of what I've done so far.
In addition, Beckham and his pop-star wife, Victoria, have become a staple of the popular press, hobnobbing with an array of stars who include their new Beverly Hills neighbors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. -- AFP |

- AP, AFP, Reuters. |

MELAKA: Tiga doktor dari Hospital Melaka (HM),
termasuk seorang doktor pakar sakit puan mengesahkan
'si suami' kepada satu pasangan yang bernikah lima
tahun lalu adalah wanita.
Pakar sakit puan terbabit, Dr Nor Hanisah Mohd Said
memberitahu Mahkamah Rendah Syariah Ayer Keroh dekat
sini, semalam, bahawa tiga doktor itu, termasuk beliau
Katanya, ketika membuat pemeriksaan fizikal, beliau
turut memeriksa pengembangan payu dara, bulu ketiak,
bulu ari-ari, bulu kaki, jenis kulit dan otot 'si
suami'.
Menurutnya, dalam semua pemeriksaan itu, disimpulkan
'si suami' mempunyai ciri-ciri kewanitaan..
"Bahagian luar kemaluan juga diperiksa dan didapati
mempunyai bentuk wanita dan tidak timbul sifat
kelakian.
"Pemeriksaan kromoson juga jelas menunjukkan defendan
adalah wanita. Saya juga membuat ujian darah dan
menghantarnya ke Jabatan Kimia untuk dianalisis dan
keputusannya mengesahkan ia darah seorang wanita,"
katanya ketika ditanya peguam syarie, Mohd Mokhtar
Karim yang mewakili Pendaftar Pernikahan, Cerai dan
Rujuk Jabatan Agama Islam Melaka (Jaim).
Defendan adalah 'si suami' , Mohd Sufian Mohamad, 40,
yang dituduh bernikah sesama jantina dengan Zaiton
Aziz, 43, mengikut Seksyen 11 Enakmen Keluarga Islam
Negeri Melaka 1983.
Jika sabit kesalahan, pernikahan mereka perlu dibubar
atau difarakhkan.
Pemeriksaan itu dibuat selepas Jaim meragui status
jantina 'si suami' kerana namanya dalam surat beranak
Mazinah Mohamad.
Sebelum itu, Jaim menerima aduan menyatakan Mohd
Sufian seorang wanita.
Pasangan terbabit yang menetap di Selangor dinikahkan
oleh Imam Satu Masjid Bukit Cina, Ishak Juki pada 27
Disember 2002, dan mengikut prosedur ditetapkan,
termasuk pengantin lelaki mendapat pengesahan bujang
daripada sidang kampung.
Menjawab pertanyaan Mohd Mokhtar mengenai kemungkinan
defendan adalah khunsa dan alat jantina lelakinya
tersorok, Dr Nor Hanisah berkata, ketika membuat
Ketika menjawab pertanyaan peguam syarie Zulfiqri
Safian Naim, berkata dia menjalankan pemeriksaan
fizikal terhadap defendan pada jam 8..45 pagi, 20
Januari tahun lalu, di Jabatan Kecemasan HM.
Menurutnya, ketika membuat pemeriksaan, dia memasukkan
Saksi lain, Azli Abdul Rahman berkata, ketika bertugas
bernikah selepas defendan mengemukakan surat
permohonan dan dokumen lengkap.
Bagaimanapun, katanya, selepas upacara itu
dilangsungkan, sijil pernikahan defendan tidak dapat
dikeluarkan kerana timbul keraguan dan kesahihan
mengikut hukum syarak sebaik pihaknya menerima aduan
bahawa defendan adalah wanita.
"Saya memanggil Imam 1 Kampung Bukit Cina, Ishak Juki
yang menikahkan defendan. Pada masa sama, defendan
menunjukkan dokumen pertukaran jantina daripada
Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN) iaitu dokumen
tetapi banyak kali tertangguh kerana defendan gagal
menunjukkan laporan perubatan yang menyatakan dia
lelaki.
"Berikutan itu, atas kuasa saya, saya membubarkan
perkahwinan defendan ketika itu hingga kes ini dibawa
ke mahkamah," katanya.
Saksi lain memberi keterangan semalam ialah Pendaftar
Pernikahan, Rujuk dan Cerai Jabatan Agama Islam Melaka
(Jaim), Kamaludin Md Dani; Pengarah JPN Putrajaya , Md
Ziki Ab Rahman; dan Ishak.
Penggulungan kes berkenaan disambung hari ini. |
