Felipe Massa targets F1 return at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Ferrari are expected to make a decision today over when the Brazilian will drive a Formula One car for the first time since suffering head injuries in a freak accident during qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix in July.
The Italian team said on Tuesday that only after completing a two-day spell in the team's simulator would a decision over the timing of Massa's comeback be made.
The FIA, the governing body of the sport, has allowed the test, which will be taken in a 2007-vintage Ferrari Formula One car that will be fitted with GP2 tires.
However, while Massa has already said he will not be able to return for his home race in Brazil in two weeks' time, he has not ruled out the possibility of racing again this season.
"It may be too close to the limit," Massa said of a return in Brazil where the world title race could be decided. "We'll see for Abu Dhabi (on Nov 1), we'll need FIA authorisation. It depends on the test (of the F2007)."
Massa arrived at the team's Maranello factory on Monday to work on his fitness and get reacquainted with the team as he continues his rehabilitation from head surgery.
"I perfectly remember how to drive," Massa told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. "My worry isn't to immediately get a good lap time, but just to drive again."
Reflecting on the injury which not only threatened his career but left his life hanging in the balance when a rear suspension spring fell off Rubens Barrichello's car and struck him on the head, Massa admits he is fortunate to have made a quick recovery.
"The damage could have been very serious and, considering the way I feel now, I have no doubt I was very lucky.
"I've often seen again the crash on TV and also myself with the injured eye immediately after. It's shocking but I was asleep and couldn't feel anything." |

Schumacher: Fingers crossed for Vettel
Michael Schumacher admits that he would love to see compatriot Sebastian Vettel race to the World Championship title in 2009. No German other than Schumacher has been crowned Champion in Formula One although the Red Bull driver still stands a chance with two Grands Prix remaining.
urrently third in the standings, 2 points behind Rubens Barrichello and 16 in arrears of leading Brawn driver Jenson Button, 'Baby Schumi' has been reminded that Kimi Räikkönen was 17 points behind at the same stage in 2007 but was still able to wrap up the title by a single point in Brazil.
"This F1 season has turned out to be extremely attractive again and, as with probably all motorsport fans, I am looking forward to seeing what will be happening in the last two races," seven-time World Champion Schumacher wrote on his website. "Both championships are still open and, for me, it is obviously important to see how the Constructors' Championship will end up - of course I wish for our guys (Ferrari) to defend their third position.
I think it helps to think of a fact which I was always sticking to during my career: It's not over until it's over, you have to fight until the end. At Ferrari, we have lived that experience very successfully for many years and I am convinced it will be like that again this time."
With Ferrari engaged in a personal battle with McLaren, which is now only 2 points behind, Michael added to his support for Vettel. "Sebastian as well will probably share this view because he still has the chance to win the title," Schumacher continued. "This alone is already a big success. I am sure he will do everything possible to show a good performance in the next two races; mathematically everything is still possible and I will keep my fingers crossed for him."

Räikkönen in pain after fuel spillage
Kimi Räikkönen experienced a highly dramatic afternoon in Brazil onSunday as the Finn recovered from a squeeze onto the grass, anunscheduled pit-stop and a giant fireball at Interlagos. Having almostretired with fuel in his eyes, the 2007 World Champion showed a superbrecovery drive to sixth place.
Having qualified in the top five on the track where he was crownedWorld Champion two years ago, Finland's Räikkönen escaped a number ofhazards at Interlagos; after being pushed onto the grass by Mark Webberon Lap 1, the leading Ferrari driver then drove over the spilt fuel ofcompatriot Heikki Kovalainen in the pit lane.
"What happened onthe first lap ruined my race," Kimi explained. "First I was hit at thefirst corner then, when trying to pass Webber I was hit and lost thefront wing. At the pit-stop, I ended up with some drops of petrol in myeye, from the fuel line stuck on Kovalainen's car, and then I wasengulfed in flames and blinded - I was going to stop but luckily theflames soon went out.
"Even now, my eyes are still burning but I'm alright."
