24-hour eye on the entire MRT system?
Rides on MRT trains could soon feel a whole lot safer, if all goes according to plan for the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The authority is inviting proposals for a round-the-clock video surveillance system (VSS) for all trains, stations, depots and a control centre.
The LTA did not give any timeframe for the installation of the system, nor would it confirm if a contract would be awarded after the deadline for the proposals on March 12. Following announcements last year that closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras would be installed on the North-South and East-West line trains, LTA is now calling for proposals detailing information and costs of implementing a VSS on SMRT trains. This is the latest move in LTA's aim to improve public transport security. In June last year, LTA began installing security cameras on certain bus routes and MRT trains on the North-South and East-West lines, as part of its feasibility study on enhancing transport security. Does her plastic bag need a seat?
A journey on the MRT on Saturday night (3rd February) left STOMPer Sara fuming about the inconsiderate behaviour of this woman, who let her plastic bag occupy an additional seat, much to the dismay of many other commuters.
The self-employed 24-year-old had boarded the train at Jurong East station, where she noted that seats were taken very quickly once she had stepped on.
"The only seat left in the cabin was the one next to this lady," Sara explained to STOMP. "Other people approached her for the seat, but she continued talking loudly in Hokkien and ignoring them."
Sara then tried to get the woman to give up the extra seat as well, but to no avail.
"Does her plastic bag need a seat?" she seethed to STOMP.

Woman "hugs" train pole
This woman raised the ire of STOMPer Vulcan as she occupied the entire length on a metal pole support in a Bukit Panjang LRT cabin on 3 February, Saturday afternoon.
"She was being so inconsiderate! There were so many other commuters in the train who were struggling to maintain balance without any support, while here she was leaning all over one," the 31-year-old engineer seethed
