Vishal-Shekhar and Pritam are mutual admirers
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, March 29, 2007]
In world of cinema where back biting and professional rivalry is an order of the day, it comes across as quite a pleasant surprise to see some of the top composers in Bollywood being so kicked about each others work.
There are two high profile albums that are slated to be the flavor of the season - METRO and TA RA RUM PUM. And guess what? Composers of both the films are gung go not just about their own music, but even their contemporary's!
While the music of METRO has already released, TA RA RUM PUM would be coming in the middle of first week of April. On asked about what he thinks of close competition from friend Pritam, Vishal Dadlani says fondly, "Arrey, he is a hit-machine! It is good to see him doing so well while delivering ever so consistently. Now he has come up with a full-on rock album. I am very happy for him. |

Mumbai trains could be painted for EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, March 29, 2007]
If you stay in Mumbai and travel by local trains there, chances are that you would be having one 'colorful' experience soon! Courtesy, Sanjay Khanduri!
In a unique promotional strategy and an intense marketing drive, there are speculations that some of the trains at handpicked railway routes may be painted with the promotional material of Abhay Deol-Neha Dhupia starrer EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL.
Is that true? "That's right", says debutant director Khanduri, "We are toying with the idea of painting the trains and are currently looking at options while getting the right permissions. Since the film revolves around a missed train and has a local train forming the backdrop of the film, as is obvious through the film's title, we thought that it would be a good idea to use this forum for the promotion of the film."
"Also, since the film is based in Mumbai and the subject would come quite naturally to the Mumbaikars, we are looking at going all out with the buzz and hype in the city", he adds, "There is a certain flavor that the city of Mumbai brings, hence it is imperative that when a subject revolves around a missed local train, we make the audience aware about what they are going to get from the film."
So when does that happen? "The film is coming on April 20th so a few days before that we should be having the permissions in place while the painters do their job. Rest assured, you would be enjoying yourself with one colorful ride the next time you board a local in Mumbai," he signs off! |

Sherlyn to play Al Pacino's role
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, March 28, 2007]
In her forthcoming film RED SWASTIK newcomer Sherlyn Chopra plays the role of a killer, or so we are told. But she also seems to be having some killer instincts when it comes to the kind of movies that she wants to be a part of.
Ask her if there's a role she would die for and pat comes the reply, "Well, there is one role that I would rather kill for and that is Al Pacino's part in 'And Justice For All'. It's my all-time dream role."
In the film Pacino plays a lawyer [Kirkland] who is forced to defend a judge charged with rape. Kirkland has had problems with the judge in the past, including one incident when the judge wrongly sentenced one of his clients because of a technicality. This is how Kirkland ends up facing a moral and legal dilemma.
Now looking at the kind of killer taste that Sherlyn has when it comes to films, film makers should better watch out and 'meat' up her character before offering her a part in their films! |

When Tusshar meets Emraan, there is magic
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, March 29, 2007]
Get set for some magic on screen as a battle of good v/s bad unfolds in front of you, thankfully in the form of a light hearted narrative.
Director Ashwini Chaudhary is bringing his next film GOOD BOY BAD BOY, a Mukta Arts production, which has Tusshar Kapoor playing the good boy while Emraan Hashmi enacts the role of a bad boy. On the other hand, twist in the tale is the pairing of heroines as the good girl [Isha Sharwani] is paired opposite the bad boy [Emraan] while bad girl [Tanushree Dutta] has a good boy [Tusshar] for company.
With an interesting premise like this, it is quite just that the film's tagline reads WHEN GOOD MEETS BAD, THERE IS MAGIC.
Also starring Paresh Rawal in a pivotal role, GOOD BOY BAD BOY has music by Himesh Reshammiya and is aiming for a May release. |

Box office analysis
Exclusive By Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, March 29, 2007]
First weekend performance of latest release
In last week's column, there were three things clearly mentioned regarding the fate of NAMASTEY LONDON at the box office.
a) The film would open well on Friday (though not excellent which means 80% above) and then take a dip in the evening shows when India/Sri Lanka match commences b) Saturday and Sunday would touch 70% c) Overall the film would be a safe bet
This has indeed turned out to be true on all 3 counts as NAMASTEY LONDON is saying 'namaste' to one and all as it has been showing a heartening response at the box office. But hold on; don't start expecting a super-duper hit here. That's certainly not the case. Unlike Akshay's big hits like PHIR HERA PHERI and BHAGAM BHAG, it may not really turn out to be a 40 crore plus film, but yes, it would sail through comfortably and make decent profits.
Still one can't help but rejoice at the opening of the film since post GURU there hasn't been a single biggie that has worked at the box office. Except for mid-budget flicks HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD., TRAFFIC SIGNAL and BLACK FRIDAY, the box office has been seeing only 'red' this year. That's the reason why when a biggie comes and opens well to indicate good box office returns, it is but obvious to be joyous about the money flowing in at the box office.
Word of mouth of the film has been fair to good though the reviews have been mostly on the brighter side. Amongst audience, the reactions have stayed in the middle range with the verdict being a 'time pass' to 'decent watch'. No one has fallen in love with the film, none have hated it either. Period!
UTV came up with its second film in as many weeks but the box office response to THE NAMESAKE has been poor to say the least. The film went through its rounds of previews and promotion but that didn't quite translate much into 'aam junta' giving it a dekko. Yes, the film has been much acclaimed internationally while Indian reviewers too have been mostly generous. But let's face it, the film should not have been expected to find much audience in India. The performances were mainly superb but the subject is not the kind that would touch many apart from those who are literary inclined.
Last week's movies
The gamble hasn't paid off for Milan Luthria and UTV. Their dream of showing a feel good film with cricket as a backdrop has sunk like a titanic as neither the film took a good opening nor has India's exit from the Cup have helped it's cause. Disappointing to the core, HAT TRICK's box office performance just doesn't justify the good work done by cast and crew of the film.
After an ordinary to below average opening on the first weekend, the film didn't quite show much improvement over the rest of the week and that resulted in it's poor first week total of under 4 crore. Releasing at near 300 cinemas, much healthier box office returns were expected, especially with Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal in the credits, but sadly that didn't quite happen at all. Lukewarm promotion followed by audience's general lack of interest meant that not many even ventured into the theater.
This is why even in a city like Mumbai; the collections were a mere 90 lakhs while Delhi wasn't impressive either with only 40 lakhs. In fact the film hasn't done well in any parts of the country hence indicating that the World Cup fever was at it's peak in the week of film's release. With India making a World Cup exit and even the film's promotion coming to a near stop, a massive fall is on the cards for HAT TRICK in it's second week. A box office failure.
Second release of the week gone by had even poorer box office response as the film neither got critical acclaim nor found an audience for itself. With just 3.25 crores in its kitty and nowhere to go in the second week, this 'honeymoon' film may hopefully be last of it's kinds for this year at the least. There was just no interest amongst the audience to watch the film even though the promotion began 3 months back. Worse, the film arrived in such an unannounced manner that other than hardcore movie buffs, no one has been even aware about the film's release. Even JUST MARRIED had only 90 lakhs coming from Mumbai though Delhi was even bad with 30 lakhs. Add the film to the tally of box office flops in year 2007.
From the past
Both 1971 and SARHAD PAAR had their collections summing up to a few thousands in the second week, which tells the scale of the colossal flops the two have been. Expect the movies' DVDs to be out soon. RED is in clear 'red' for its makers as the film all but vanished in the second week. With a 90% fall, it could be Aftab Shivdasani's biggest flop ever from his current crop of films. A pity since the young man yet again performed well but without much dividends. The film would end it's run at 3.5 crores.
In comparison WATER won't even reach there as the film took a 70% fall to barely cross the 1.25 crore mark. That should in fact be the maximum distance the film would travel. And no, let's not blame John Abraham here as it was hardly his movie. He was there in an extended guest appearance if one looks at the length of his role and hence can afford to maintain a safe distance from the box office disappointment.
On the other hand, NISHABD is indeed an Amitabh Bachchan-RGV combo failure as the film further crashed by over 60% to get home a mere 35 lakhs. After a decent start of 5 crores, the film has all but wrapped up at a shade over 6 crore, which clearly indicates the way film has been rejected all over. No hopes are lost still since one can expect two powerhouse films coming from the combo in the form of RGV KE SHOLAY and SARKAR 2. Yes, we are waiting for them!
The film which is benefiting most due to disappointing films all around it is HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD. Even in it's fourth week, the film has managed to get another 1 crore for itself hence bringing it's tally to 11.5 crore. Ek decent si success story, HTPL has proved to be a good outing for everyone associated with the film. Also, it has done a world of good for actors like Abhay Deol and Raima Sen who have got their first major box office success. On the other hand bad run of Ameesha Patel too has ended as she finally has a success to her name.
In it's 10th week, GURU has collected another 10 lakhs and though the numbers may look on a lower side now when compared to its overall total of 41.5 crores +, the fact cannot be denied that after VIVAH it is only GURU that has worked so consistently at the box office over the weeks. The biggest success of 2007 so far, it's total collections would only be challenged by Saif Ali Khan-Rani Mukherjee starrer TA RA RUM PUM which releases late April. From last week's total of 25 lakhs, VIVAH has moved down only by a couple of lakhs which shows a remarkable hold that the film continues to have in the 100 odd cinemas where it is still playing, in spite of entering into it's 20th week. At 31 crores plus, the film is a massive success.
In the future
Three medium to small budget films release this Friday - DELHII HEIGHTS, KHANNA & IYER and SAY SALAAM INDIA. Out of the three, only DELHII HEIGHTS has seen some decent promotion happening. On the other hand though KHANNA & IYER and SAY SALAAM INDIA come from contrasting production background [former comes from the house of Subhash Ghai while latter has independent producers at the helm], promotion of both have left much to be desired. |

KLSH star runs to save his life
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, March 30, 2007]
Newcomer model Karan Hukku who debuts in the forthcoming Tusshar-Ayesha-Kareena starrer Kya Love Story Hai (releasing on April 20) went through a traumatic experience while shooting for the film in Cape Town recently.
It was his first ever outdooor and the cast had been put up in plush villas on the main road. The villas were guarded by security personnel to avoid interference by black beggars. One day, it seems, a scary looking beggar put his head inside Hukku's villa much to the latter's shock! Mistaking him to be a killer or thief, the paranoid model ran for his life a few kilometres to the beach shouting out for the director Lovely (Singh)! The security was summoned immediately and only then were matters resolved! That was one evening Hukku will never forget! |

"I am both anxious and excited about my 4 releases" - Tusshar Kapoor
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, March 30, 2007]
It's one of those phases in an actor's career, which he never plans, but just happens: multiple releases in a quick span of time.
Tusshar Kapoor is experiencing one of the most nail-biting phases of his career - with as many as four heavyweight films due in two months.
His first solo release is N.R.Pachisia's Kya Love Story Hai opposite Ayesha Takia and with Kareena Kapoor in a sensational appearance. The film is due to release on April 20. This will also be Tusshar's first solo overseas release theatrically, being aggressively marketed by Studio 18.
Between May and June, Tusshar has Subhash Ghai's Good Boy Bad Boy, Sanjay Gupta's multi-starrer Shootout At Lokhandwala and Priyadarshan's Dhol. Ask Tusshar and he laughs, "You'll see me turn into a bundle of nerves over the next two months!" He adds, "I am both anxious and excited about all my releases because each of them sees me essaying completely different characters. But for now I've devoted the next three weeks exclusively to Kya Love Story Hai. I'm happy its music is faring so well including the overseas. It's a sweet and simple romantic story that has been treated with a lot of gloss and freshness." |

Also the enthralling part remains an amazing cyber link that merges Kong and his human brother Jason into one. Vivek Oberoi follows SRK's footsteps
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, March 31, 2007]
Post the release of NAKSHA, Vivek Oberoi may have been lying low on the Bollywood front. But in the recent Lakme Fashion week, he made quite a fashion statement. He looked very 'IN' with a shiney tie thrown over a shirt that had fashion critics raving about him.
Even designer Nandita Mahtani & film maker Karan Johar complimented Viveik on his fashion statement, which is the look of the season.
Increasingly Vivek has been making a fashion statement like SRK. This is a far cry from the days when Vivek was careless with his dressing style.
Just like SRK in his earlier avtar, even Vivek did not pay heed to dressing up fashionably. But right now, not only is he up in the fashion quotient, he has also been working out on his physique. |

Watch out for dhoti-clad Akshaye in his next film
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, March 31, 2007]
Akshaye Khanna, after wearing a dhoti for designer Manav Gangwani, kicked up quite a storm in the fashion week. The fashion fraternity was unanimous that Akshaye looked too cool in the dhoti outfit.
But unaware to anyone, the fact is that this is not the first time Akshaye has worn a dhoti. Infact for Anil Kapoor's production 'Gandhi, My Father', Akshaye is always attired in a dhoti, that goes according to his character. Akshaye can't speak about it though since it is rumored that he has a 'non disclosure clause' in the contract.
Insiders who have seen a sneak peek of the film are unanimous that it is Akshaye Khanna's best performance till date. They have been raving about it and add that 'Gandhi, My Father' will surely be India's entry to the Oscars next year. |

Sooraj Barjatya's assistant signs Sarvar Ahuja
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, April 02, 2007]
Sarvar Ahuja's debut film KHANNA & IYER has just been released but even before that he has already being wooed by film makers to sign on the dotted line.
One such film maker is Vinay Mudgil who has been an Associate Director to Sooraj Barjatya over the years. For his forthcoming film which he would be directing himself, he has signed Sarvar as a male lead.
"It gives me a lot of confidence to see things looking up for me even as my first film has just released", says Sarvar. "In fact after KHANNA & IYER I have 2 more films lined up for release in April and May. Later I would be starting work on two more films, one of which is Vinay's. By the time the year ends, I should have as many as 5 releases in my debut year."
Now that's quite an achievement and who knows, even a record of sorts! |

"DELHII HEIGHTS would be very successful overseas" - Anand Kumar
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, April 02, 2007]
Rarely does one find a film maker who is so confident about his film from day one, even if it is his debut venture.
Anand Kumar is one of them who surely believes that DELHII HEIGHTS is a kind of film that has immense potential to work with word of mouth, even if it takes a moderate beginning.
"I am sure the film would eventually turn out to be a success", says the young man, "And mark my words, it won't be just in India but even overseas."
And how come is he so confident about that? "See, one of the key highlights is it's music by Rabbi Shergill. He is quite an icon, especially when it comes to overseas. I have all the information that indicates that he is quite a popular name in US as well as UK. And in India, we all know about his popularity ever since the time 'Bulla Ki Jaana' became such a massive hit. The songs themselves would makes sure that the film finds its audience." |

Adnan Sami returns with 'Kisi Din'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, April 02, 2007]
After a hiatus, Adnan Sami would be returning to the singing scene with his latest album 'Kisi Din'.
Slated for release later this month, the album comes in the wake of his super successful albums 'Kabhi To Nazar Milao', 'Tera Chehra' and 'Teri Kasam'.
Sami has been missing from action for more than 2 years as he got immersed in an intense weight loss program. In fact he was not seen much even in Bollywood composition and singing scene after he gave music for Salman Khan starrer LUKCY - NO TIME FOR LOVE.
His most popular track in the recent times has been 'Dil Kya Kare' which he sung for Shankar Ehsaan Loy's SALAAM E ISHQ. Just recently he was heard in Pritam's 'Baatein' for which he has contributed to the rock band created for the film LIFE IN A...METRO.
Now one keenly anticipates Adnan's 'Kisi Din' since his albums always boast of class, quality and some great music videos. One wishes that 'Kisi Din' only follows the trend! |
