SURAM DI LUAR PENJARA
Oleh
Farid Hamzah

Australian PM rules out death penalty campaign after Singapore hanging
ADVERTISEMENT

Australian Prime Minister John Howard has ruled out launching an international campaign to abolish the death penalty, as the body of a convicted drug trafficker hanged in Singapore arrived home.

Howard said that while he opposed last Friday's execution of Melbourne man Nguyen Tuong Van, he did not believe a diplomatic push from Canberra to abolish capital punishment would succeed.

"We have to be realistic about what can be achieved," Howard told ABC television. "We're not going to change the attitude of countries in the region about capital punishment.

"When you talk about the region you have to include in that, of course, China. China executes people on a regular basis, (and) the United States has capital punishment."

Howard was speaking after a plane carrying Nguyen's body touched down in Melbourne early Sunday, ahead of the 25-year-old's funeral on Wednesday.

The hanging sparked outrage in Australia and Nguyen's lawyer Lex Lasry said the country, which abolished the death penalty in 1985, should use the case to rally opposition to capital punishment.

"Australia is in a great position to take a human rights lead in this region and to make the argument to the other countries -- the rational, intellectual, legal argument as to why the death penalty simply can no longer be tolerated," Lasry told reporters after arriving in Melbourne.

Lasry said Nguyen's mother Kim, who was denied permission to hug her son before he was killed, was coming to terms with her loss.

"She is really pleased to be home and Van (Nguyen) was on that flight as well, it's a great relief that this, in a sense, is over," he said.

"She is going to move forward from here, she takes great inspiration and strength from her son."

Nguyen was caught trying to smuggle 400 grams (14 ounces) of heroin through Singapore, which has a mandatory death sentence for those caught with more than 15 grams of the drug.

The Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported three other Australians were on death row in Asia after being convicted of drug crimes.

The newspaper said Mai Cong Thanh, 46, from Melbourne, and Nguyen Van Chinh, 45, from New South Wales state, were facing death in Vietnam after being convicted of conspiring to smuggle heroin into Australia.

It said the other condemned Australian was Henry Chhin, who was convicted in China last year March of trying to mail 270 grams of methamphetamine to Australia but who will have his death sentence reviewed in 2007.

In addition, nine Australians on trial for heroin smuggling on the Indonesian island of Bali face potential death sentences.

Howard said he would campaign for the lives of Australians on death row.

"I will always lobby for a capital conviction, a sentence of death on an Australian overseas to be waived, for clemency to be granted," Howard said.

Mum didn't know he was married though she and daughter were...

Dead man had gone to Linda's home before

Linda's family knew they were colleagues

By Ng Tze Yong

November 29, 2005

THE two grieving families met briefly at the mortuary yesterday morning. The air was thick with tension and the two groups exchanged no words.

Then as they passed within earshot of each other, the dead girl's mother burst out crying: 'He's married. He has a wife!'

Collapsing on the floor in tears, the grief-stricken woman continued to lament her daughter's sudden death.

The death of 19-year-old Linda Gian, the youngest of four children, has left the family shaken.

But what puzzles them most is how she was found and who she was found with.

Miss Gian's body was discovered on Saturday in the car of her senior colleague in a multi-storey carpark in Chua Chu Kang Ave 4.

The man, Mr Jerome Peck Kian Pheng, 33, was found slumped over her. Both were dead.

Eldest sister Bao Ling told Shin Min Daily News that their mother had met Mr Peck once.

He had come to their home to meet Miss Gian, but did not step inside.

'At that time, my sister introduced him to my mum only as a colleague and friend,' said Bao Ling, 32.

She said her mother took little notice of Mr Peck and did not ask if the two were seeing each other romantically.

Bao Ling said that she was very close to her sister, but that Miss Gian only spoke of Mr Peck as one of the colleagues she was closer to at work.

However, he was not the only colleague Miss Gian talked about, so Bao Ling said she did not take special notice of him.

When the two families first saw each other at the mortuary yesterday, news that Mr Peck was a married man was met with a rude shock.

'We had no idea he was married,' claimed Bao Ling. 'We can't imagine why they were together that night.'

Miss Gian and Mr Peck worked for Singapore Technologies Logistics. He was a logistics executive and she an administrative officer.

It was reported that at the mortuary yesterday, both families arrived in full force.

Mr Peck's wife, brother and mother were accompanied by about 10 family friends, while Miss Gian's mother and sisters were also comforted by a large group of people.

The two groups stood near each other, but apart. Between them hung an awkward silence.

The paper reported that five members from each group broke the silence and spoke, but the conversation quickly escalated into what appeared to be an angry discussion.

A Shin Min Daily News reported that the two groups gestured angrily for about 10 minutes.

Then, they separated. There was no further contact between the families.

However, when The New Paper spoke to Mr Peck's father this morning, he denied that his family had spoken with Miss Gian's family.

The man, who declined to be named, said he was there only to identify the body and that there was no confrontation.

At Miss Gian's wake at her parent's home in Kim Keat Ave 2 last night, Bao Ling insisted that Mr Peck was not her sister's boyfriend.

Miss Gian's father and sisters were angry at suggestions that the two could be lovers and vehemently denied it.

Bao Ling told The New Paper: 'Linda was very close to us. She always brought her boyfriends home to meet us.'

Dismissing suicide, one family member said: 'She made so many plans for the future. She had been telling us all about it.'

Miss Gian lives with her mother, while her second sister lives with her father.

Miss Gian did not seem to be having any problems.

Just on Friday night, Miss Gian had gone to Plaza Singapura to catch a movie with her sisters, they said. She was in high spirits.

'We had even made plans to go karaoke on Saturday night, the night she died. The karaoke room was already booked,' said Bao Ling.

But Miss Gian, the youngest in the family, had been missing since midnight Friday.

After the movie, she had told her sisters she was going to collect something from a colleague and informed her second sister she would stay over at her home.

That was the last time they saw her alive. Miss Gian did not return to her sister's home that night.

On her love for karaoke, family members said Saturday nights at an East Coast karaoke lounge were special.

Everyone, from Miss Gian's parents to her sisters' boyfriends, would be there.

'Linda loved singing. She never missed the sessions,' said Bao Ling.

The night she did not turn up at her sister's home was a frantic one for the family.

They called her handphone many times the next day but there was no response.

Still, they went ahead with karaoke session that night. But the mood wasn't there.

'We were all worried for her because it was the first time she had not come home. She's not the kind who stayed out late,' said Bao Ling.

EVERYONE DOTED ON HER

Just after midnight that day (early Sunday), the police broke the heart-breaking news to the family.

Described as outgoing, cheerful and bright, Miss Gian was the baby of the family of four girls.

'Everyone doted on her,' said Bao Ling.

When she started working, Miss Gian saved most of her $1,500-a-month salary, giving most of it to her mother.

She reminded her mother, who suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, about her medical appointments and made sure she took her medication.

Madam Ong wailed at the wake: 'Linda, you are so young. How can you leave me just like that?'

She later said: 'She used to tease me, asking: 'If one day, I am no longer around, would you cry over me?'' her voice breaking again.

Family members said that Miss Gian dropped out of school at 15, but was optimistic about her future.

She borrowed $4,000 to enrol in a nine-month beautician course which she passed. She also wanted to take up driving lessons.

Last seen at karaoke lounge
November 29, 2005

Mr Jerome Peck left his flat on Friday morning at about 8am. That was the last time this wife (below left, with a relative) saw him.
MR Jerome Peck was last seen by his wife leaving for work at 8am on Friday.

They had been married for seven years and have a 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son.

That Friday afternoon, Mrs Peck, 34, sent her husband an SMS. They were supposed to go for a primary school orientation programme the next day. His reply was: 'See you tonite.'

She knew he was planning to hang out with friends after work that day. That was unusual, as Mr Peck normally preferred to stay at home, said his wife.

At 11.40pm, Mrs Peck sent him another SMS asking him to come home early. Mr Peck replied: 'OK.'

Mr Peck was believed to be with friends at a karaoke lounge late on Friday night.

He left around 2am on Saturday with a colleague, Mr Jonathan Lua, an operations executive. Mr Lua is believed to be the last person to have seen Mr Peck alive.

At Miss Gian's wake, her sisters appealed to Mr Lua for information about what Mr Peck had said to him the night before he was found dead.

Shin Min Daily News reported that neighbours said the couple was very loving. One saw them leaving their flat hand-in-hand two weeks ago. Mr Peck fetched his wife, who works in a bank, to work daily.

However, some neighbours said the couple often quarrelled. Sometimes, they heard things being thrown about. But the last two months have been quiet, they said.

Mr Peck's brother told The New Paper this morning that the widow is coping well.

CHOA CHU KANG MYSTERY
Did gas from exhaust poison them?
Windows wound up

Aircon on, battery flat

Ignition turned on

Car was old - exhaust leaks possible

By Ng Tze Yong

November 29, 2005

THEY were found dead in puzzling circumstances on Saturday night.

Miss Linda Gian's mother at the wake. --DOMINIC YING
The police have ruled out murder. So was it suicide? Or was it an accident?

They found the body of Mr Jerome Peck Kian Pheng, 33, on top of his colleague, Miss Linda Gian, 19, in the passenger seat of an old grey Suzuki Swift.

The car was parked in a multi-storey carpark in Choa Chu Kang Ave 4.

UNNATURAL DEATH

Police said there were no signs of injuries on both bodies. They were fully clothed.

They have classified the case as unnatural death.

If it was an accident, one possible mishap in such a case could be carbon monoxide poisoning.

In 1990, police found the bodies of Mr Lim Eng Keong, 27, a married businessman, and his Malaysian girlfriend, Miss Chew Ah Bian, 26, in his seven-year-old Mazda. It had a hole in the boot and a missing exhaust pipe.

In Saturday's tragedy, Mr Alfred Yip, the boyfriend of Miss Gian's third sister, said that police had told him the battery of the Suzuki Swift was flat and the ignition turned on.

Most victims of carbon monoxide poisoning die without suspecting anything is wrong as the deadly gas, which is odourless, can kill in minutes.

Those who commit suicide through carbon monoxide poisoning would usually connect a hose from the exhaust pipe into the car to fill it with the deadly gas.

It is understood no such hose was found in Mr Peck's car.

And Miss Gian's family last night said that the teenager would never have killed herself.

She was a cheerful person who had plans to become a beautician and to take up driving lessons.

Dismissing suicide, Mr Yip said: 'She made so many plans for the future. She had been telling us all about it.'

She did not seem to be having any problems.

On Friday night, Miss Gian had gone to Plaza Singapura to catch a movie with her sisters, they said.

Her sisters remember she was in high spirits and they had made plans to go karaoke on Saturday night.

Family members said that Miss Gian, after dropping out of school at 15, but was optimistic about her future.

She had borrowed $4,000 for a nine-month beautician course, which she passed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CARBON monoxide is an odourless, colourless gas that can cause sudden illness and death. It is found in combustion fumes, such as those produced by cars and lorries.

Carbon monoxide from these sources can build up in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces.

High levels of carbon monoxide ingestion can cause loss of consciousness and death. People who are sleeping or intoxicated can die from carbon monoxide poisoning before ever experiencing symptoms.

Pianist Melvyn Tan defers public appearance at Esplanade after NS furore
ADVERTISEMENT

SINGAPORE : Pianist Melvyn Tan, the man at the centre of the recent controversy over National Service evasion, said he would defer his public appearance at the Esplanade and not be a judge in a local competition.
He said he came back to Singapore knowing full well he could face a jail term.

Mr Tan said he was driven by the desire to contribute to the arts in Singapore and see his parents.

He was fined for evading National Service, causing unhappiness among some Singaporeans who are against a fine for NS evaders.

In the debate that followed, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said he is in favour of firm sentences.

Mr Teo also said the Defence Ministry was reviewing penalties imposed on those who evade National Service, with the view to asking for stiffer sentences.

In an open letter to Singaporeans, Mr Tan said he is sad and dismayed he has become the cause of the uproar.

He said he was not given special treatment in court because of his profession.

Mr Tan said what has happened has caused his parents and him anguish, and he has decided to defer public appearances over the NS debate and to continue without his further aggravating it.

He said he hoped one day he would still to be able to perform in Singapore, and be able to tell through music what he has found difficult to put into words. - CNA/de

Sad plight of 5-year-old girl
Born with no eyeballs
December 06, 2005

MOST children can walk and talk by the time they are 5. But not Zheng Wenxuan.

She is not an ordinary child.

Born without eyeballs, Wenxuan is as helpless as a baby.

But being blind is not her only problem. She also can't walk, talk, chew or swallow solid food.

Doctors have found that the left and right sides of her brain are not joined by connecting nerves.

So, even though Wenxuan was sent to a school for children with special needs when she was 2, her learning speed is 10 times slower than children her age.

Wenxuan's mother, Madam Fu Yuling, has to stay home and look after her, Guang Ming Daily reported.

Wenxuan was also born with a hole in the heart.

Her parents moved from Pahang to Kuala Lumpur so that she can receive treatment at a hospital in the federal capital.

To help pay her mounting medical bills, her parents approached the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) for help, hoping that publicising their plight will attract public donations.

CAN'T CHEW
Wenxuan's father, Mr Zheng Jinghong, who is in the renovation business, said: 'Although she is 5 years old and has a mouth full of teeth, she still can't chew or swallow solid food.

'So even now, she is on a liquid-based diet. She can eat porridge or rice mixed with sugar water.

'She doesn't have a big appetite and can only eat a little at a time.'

Since Wenxuan was two months old, she has had thin films placed inside her eye sockets, to prevent the area from caving in due to the absence of eyeballs.

The films need to be changed regularly as Wenxuan gets older.

So far, she has undergone the procedure 10 times.

As the doctor who performed the procedure had moved to Malacca, Wenxuan has to go there whenever she needs the films replaced.

Wenxuan needs to be hospitalised for one to three days after each operation.

The money for the operations come from a fund set up by the MCA for Wenxuan in 2000.

HEART IS NOW STABLE

Mr Zheng said Wenxuan's heart is now fine after going for an operation to correct the defect when she was 1.

Although she is blind, Madam Fu said Wenxuan is sensitive to her surroundings.

Wenxuan would be lively at home. But when she is taken to another place, she would become quiet.

Madam Fu said: 'But once she gets used to a strange place, Wenxuan would become noisy and lively again.'

Wenxuan, like any other child, becomes very happy when her parents take her out.

'She hates hot places. When I take her to a night market, she would become unhappy and make a lot of noise.

'But if I take her to a shopping centre, she would become more cheery. So, I always take her to places with air-conditioning.'

Like most mothers, Madam Fu knows what her daughter wants, even though the girl can't speak.

Madam Fu said: 'I am used to her after so long. I know from her actions what she is thinking about.

'If she is afraid, she would fold her arms and shake her fists.'

Salah seorang jiran, Hajah Kasminah Kasmati, 66 tahun, berkata: 'Bunyi begitu kuat dan suara orang menjerit merayu sampai takut mak cik dibuatnya.

'Akhir sekali mak cik dengar suara wanita menjerit 'Tolong bang, jangan, sakit' kemudian suara lelaki pula 'Mampus kau'. Lepas itu semua senyap.'

Menyifatkan Allahyarhamha sebagai isteri yang baik, Encik Rahim berkata Allahyarhamha sanggup setia menanti suaminya pulang setiap kali dia keluar minum selewat 1 atau 2 pagi.

Beliau, seorang pekerja pembersihan, mengaku abangnya itu sering memarahi isterinya apabila dia mabuk.

Beliau cuba beberapa kali menegur sikap abangnya, namun setiap kali kakak iparnya akan mempertahankan suaminya.

Lantas, apabila mereka bertengkar Jumaat lalu, Encik Rahim meninggalkan rumah setelah menutup pintu kamar tidur anak saudaranya.

BAPA GUNA ANAK CUBA SELUDUP PAKET ROKOK

Woodlands sekitar 3.20 petang kelmarin.

ANGKATAN RAJA SEHARI
HOBINYA menyimpan video cerita-cerita lama.

Menolak permintaannya, Hakim Daerah, Cik Danielle Yeow, berkata:

Jenazah Allahyarhamha selamat dikebumikan semalam.

Adik tertuduh, Encik Abdul Rahim Abdul Ras hid, 43 tahun, ketika diberitahu hasrat abangnya untuk melihat isterinya, berkata:

'Buat apa dia (Mohammad Zam) nak tengok isterinya lagi... dah jadi jenazah. Kalau dia mahu pun, pihak keluarga tak akan kasi dia datang.'

Kesnya akan didengar lagi 13 Disember ini.

Jika sabit kesalahan, dia boleh dihukum gantung.

lepas ni suruh dia kawin dgn botol beer

PENUMPANG MASUKKAN NOT $10 TERLALU CEPAT

Namun, penumpang tadi memberitahu tiada wang kecil dan memasukkan not $10 pula sebelum sempat ditegah kapten bas.
