Box office analysis
Exclusive By Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, April 19, 2007]
First weekend performance of latest release
There was absolutely no surprise in which the three releases of the Friday gone by - BIG BROTHER, LIFE MEIN KABHIE KABHIIE and BHEJA FRY - behaved. Though some heads turned in surprise to see BIG BROTHER meeting with a good response up North; it was mentioned in this very column last week that the film did have its chances in the circuit. What surprised though was to see the film doing quite well not just in Punjab and UP [Sunny's hot territories] but even Bihar, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The film saw a good opening in the entire North India belt and though Mumbai was quite dull, film maker Guddu Dhanoa would still be smiling to see his long delayed film fetching a decent initial in rest of the country. Nevertheless, in order to be called a neat success, the film needs to sustain itself beyond a good opening weekend and once the collections are disclosed for the first week, the picture would become clearer for final box office outcome of BIG BROTHER.
LIFE MEIN KABHIE KABHIEE opened to a very poor response and no one but the team that looked at the promotional campaign of the film needs to be blamed. What were they trying to sell the film on? A campus fun caper? Love story? Musical? Yet another film relying on an ensemble set up? What exactly was the film's USP? This is something that wasn't disclosed whereas the fact was the film's USP lied in its rich dramatic content and a story that kept you engrossed in the proceedings!
Agreed that Vikram Bhatt had a string of box office disappointments behind him but still why such a half hearted effort in film's publicity? Result was for everyone to see as the audience didn't even walk into the theaters, let alone spreading any word of mouth. A complete non-starter, it would be an unlucky venture for Bhatt as he extracted some real fine performances from his entire team.
Small/new age cinema has worked yet again. After BEING CYRUS, KHOSLA KA GHOSLA and THE NAMESAKE, add BHEJA FRY to the list of films that have been accepted by the audience in spite of a plot that breaks the norm with a narrative that is clearly experimental. A film that completely lied on the shoulders of Vinay Pathak, BHEJA FRY has taken a positive opening and the way opening weekend has looked, it would clearly cover its investment at the least.
Last week's movies
Regarding box office outcome of SLBB, it was mentioned last week that "if the film's trending doesn't move towards stability soon, it would turn out to be a loosing venture for everyone involved." Sadly, the worst fear has come true as the film only dipped down as the days progressed and by the time the first week was through, writing was clear on the wall. Surprisingly there wasn't even a revival effort by those associated with the film as SLBB continued to move downhill.
Released at over 400 cinemas, the film's collections stood at only 6 crores with only Mumbai managing to cross 1 crore mark. Delhi was second best with merely 50 lakhs that clearly indicates that the film has not caught the fancy of audience. Due to its low prices, SLBB may eventually scrape through to be coverage at the least though even that would be quite a task for the film. While Suneel Darshan may be left wondering about his switch of genres by making a multiplex film after a string of single screen successes, the only person who seems to have benefited most is Upen Patel who got to play his first ever full fledged role.
PROVOKED failed to create any ripple and is en route to folding up after an unimpressive first week. Releasing without any hype and on verge of disappearing in a matter of fortnight, this Aishwarya Rai starrer just managed to reach the 1.25 crore mark. Both Mumbai and Delhi had poor collections in the vicinity of 10 lakhs each and with a big fall expected in the second week, it is not the ideal pre-wedding gift that Ash would have expected from the box office.
From the past
DELHII HEIGHTS, KHANNA & IYER and SAY SALAAM INDIA are absolute disasters and have wrapped up in a matter of a fortnight. Collections of each of the three films were negligible in the third week as they were hardly in the running at any theaters. It's time now for the films' DVDs to be out on stands.
Yet again, NAMASTEY LONDON took less than an industry standard fall of 50%. While the second week saw only 40% drop, even third week was good as the film witnessed only 45% fall. With further 5 crores coming in, the film clearly shows that Akshay Kumar continues to be the darling of the masses and is one of the most consistent (and successful) star-actors around as the film has turned out to be a clear HIT.
In a matter of 3 weeks, NAMASTEY LONDON has crossed the 30 crore mark and continues to be patronized due to ever increasing word of mouth. A (minor) segment of audience may have ignored it in the beginning due to a loud feel that the film gave but even they are now giving the film a dekko. The film is doing good in Mumbai [85 lakhs] and Delhi [50 lakhs] while even smaller centers are adding on to film's collections.
In the times when biggest of films with massive promotional campaign/star power behind them are falling like nine pins at the box office, Mira Nair's THE NAMESAKE continues its dream run in not just overseas (its target audience) but even India.
After a lukewarm start, the film went on to register good numbers in the first week and the trend has repeated in the third week as the film has sustained amazingly with mere 25% fall. Registering yet another 1 crore plus week, the film is now a very good box office winner and has crossed the 3.5 crore mark.
Shahid Kapoor's honeymoon is now into its 23rd week as VIVAH boasts of yet another consistent week with 15 lakhs more being added on. Further 15 lakhs away from crossing 32 crore, the feat should be achieved in a week's time.
In the future
One medium budget film and 3 really small films arrive this Friday. While KYA LOVE STORY HAI comes with a massive promotional drive, MY BOLLYWOOD BRIDE, PAPPU PAAS HO GAYA and PANGAA NA LO aren't even known to many. These three films hardly stand a chance and have disasters written all over.
While MBB comes 3 years late and has Kashmira Shah as USP, PPHG too is a delayed product that stars Kashmira with Jackie Shroff's presence in the project indicating a sorry tale. PNL is a comedy and if only it was promoted and placed better, this Om Puri-Satish Shah film may have sprung a surprise.
All of this makes Shahid Kapoor-Ayesha Takia starrer as the first choice of cinegoers this week and is expected to open in the vicinity of 40%. Good part about KLSH is that it has been publicized heavily with the promos giving a clear indication of what it is all about. Also the soundtrack by Pritam is popular with 'It's Rocking' literally rocking the charts.
On the flipside the film gives an impression of deja vu with KLSH sounding like yet another teen romance/drama with hardly any twists. Moreover it has just a week to prove itself since the coming weekend sees the arrival of TA RA RUM PUM which is going to invade screens all over in a big way. |

IndiaGlitz [Thursday, April 19, 2007]
Last night at the sangeet ceremony of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, director Karan Johar made sure that Kareena Kapoor's presence was felt!
The industry rumour is that Karan, who choreographed and masterminded a large part of the show, planned a special grand finale where Aishwarya and Abhishek danced to Kareena's latest hit track, It's Rocking Yaara Kabhi Ishq To Karo from the film, Kya Love Story Hai, which coincidentally, releases tomorrow on 20th April, the same day as the Abhi-Ash wedding! |

Now SPIDERMAN scares away competition
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, April 19, 2007]
Earlier it was TA RA RUM PUM and now it is SPIDERMAN 3 that has scared away all the competition at the theaters across the country.
When TA RA RUM PUM announced its release on April 27, there was not a single film that took the challenge of facing it full frontal on the given Friday. In fact so strong is this Yash Raj film being considered as a competition that only one notable film, KYA LOVE STORY HAI, has dared to arrive a week before [Apr 20].
Now SPIDERMAN 3 is also flaunting its might in a big way. Arriving on May 4 all over, it is the sole release of the week with no other Bollywood film arriving on the same day. While earlier there were speculations around RAQEEB coming on May 4, even it has moved ahead by at least a week.
The reasons are two-fold. First and foremost SPIDERMAN 3 is a big enough challenge. Secondly TA RA RUM PUM wave is expected to continue even in its second weekend hence endangering the box office prospects of any Bollywood film that comes its way. |

GBBB confirmed for 11th May
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, April 19, 2007]
Emraan Hashmi would eventually be having two back to back releases this week.
While Hasnain Hyderabadwaala-Raksha Mistry directed THE TRAIN had closed on May 18 as the release date weeks back, Subhash Ghai's production GOOD BOY BAD BOY too is arriving at a breathing distance. Directed by Ashwini Chaudhary, the film is now confirmed for May 11, just a week before Emraan's other starrer THE TRAIN releases.
The comforting part is that both the films belong to diverse genre. While THE TRAIN is an adult thriller, GOOD BOY BAD BOY is a campus comedy. As things stand now, none of the film makers are budging from their stand and are sure about bringing their films on the stated dates. |

"ECKLL has dark characters like PULP FICTION" - Sanjay
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, April 19, 2007]
Sanjay Khanduri's directorial effort EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL may have postponed its arrival to May 18 but that hasn't deterred the film to continue being in news.
The latest to come is Sanjay's claim about the film bearing resemblance to PULP FICTION. Well, not literally, but at least as far as characterization is involved.
Since the film revolves around the journey of Abhay Deol and Neha Dhupia from mid-night till very early in the morning, it sees the two coming across diverse characters - some light hearted, some really dark. There are some characters belonging to the latter variety which are expected to scare not just the protagonists but even the audience, though be assured to have some nervous giggles too.
Says Sanjay, "You have heard it right. I had the images of PULP FICTION in my mind ever since I had seen it and there was this inspiring sense in me to incorporate the elements somewhere. Thankfully my film is a dark comedy and it was imperative for me to pay tribute and use some character references of the classic into my film as well." |

Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 21, 2007]
Tandav Films Entertainment has all the right reasons to smile.
While it is a known fact that the film did very well at the theaters and proved to be a surprise success, even in home entertainment circuits the film is a big hit. Meanwhile, the film continues to bag awards one after another practically every month.
Latest news to come in is that 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' has been declared 'The Best Film of the Festival'. This was awarded by the viewing public at the Asian Film Festival in Austria, hence adding one more to the growing repertoire of awards the film has gathered over the months. |

Shilpa invites Jade: Kya False Story Hai!
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 21, 2007]
It was recently reported in the media that Shilpa Shetty has invited ex-'Big Brother' participant Jade Goody for the London premiere of Anurag Basu's forthcoming film 'Metro'. But this news turns out to be yet another false rumor about the actress.
"Shilpa has indeed invited a couple of 'Big Brother' participants who are in touch with her after the show. But Jade is not one of them," clarified Dale Bhagwagar, spokesperson and publicist to Shetty.
The actress, leaving for London in the second week of May, is also planning to invite part of the 'Big Brother' production team for the premiere. |

DHOL postponed, Priyan v/s Nadiadwala clash averted
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 21, 2007]
Till around a week back, it had appeared that Priyadarshan and Firoz Nadiadwala would have a clash yet again after CHUP CHUP KE and PHIR HERA PHERI. Their films DHOL and FOOL N FINAL were all set to arrive on June 01 and the stage was set for yet another deadly multi-starrer clash.
Well, the clash has been averted as DHOL has moved ahead by 3 weeks and is now aiming for a June 22 release. Ever since Nadiadwala announced June 01 as the release date of FOOL N FINAL, its publicity is on full swing with the song promos being on whereas both the print and web media have been agog with news bytes about the film.
Meanwhile there is absolutely no news around DHOL except for some mention in the trade magazine.
Nevertheless, now it would be interesting to see if DHOL indeed arrives on June 22 as a week before comes Yash Raj Films' JHOOM BARAABAR JHOOM whereas a week later there are as many as 5 biggies slated for release - AAP KA SURROOR - THE MOVIEE, APNE, AWAARAPAN, CASH and KAAFILA!
While DHOL stars Tusshar Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Khemu and Tanushree Datta in the lead along with Rajpal Yadav, Om Puri, Payal Rohatgi, Arbaaz Khan and Murli Sharma, FOOL N FINAL is even huge with Sunny Deol, Shahid Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Vivek Oberoi, Jackie Shroff, Ayesha Takia, Bipasha Basu and Sameera Reddy in lead along with Javed Jaffrey, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav, Vijay Raaz, Razzak Khan, Arbaaz Khan and Zakir Hussain. |

When Sayali tought Emraan how to kiss!
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 21, 2007]
Come May 18 and it would be known to the world whether Emraan Hashmi has kissed Sayali Bhagat or Geeta Basra more in THE TRAIN. But before that let's spill the beans about the kissing technique that Sayali tought him during the shooting of the film.
Quite a role reversal, isn't it, considering the fact that the 'serial kisser' has been known for his holds-no-bar kissing with practically each of his heroines so far.
Well, the story goes like this. Since Sayali Bhagat is an ex-Miss India, she was having fun on the sets with rest of the crew while narrating her experience of waving at the crowds and showering them with 'flying kisses'! This is when Emraan happened to be around and Sayali tought him too about this particular technique.
Adds Rakha Mistry, co-director of the film, "It was so funny to see Sayali replicate the entire sequence of events that happen at a beauty pageant. Right from the walking the ramp to answering questions to bringing your palms close to your mouth while bearing a shocked expression on your face to showering flying kisses - she did it all that left us amused to say the least! It was sheer fun, believe me, and everyone just pulled Emmy's [Emraan] legs telling him how he had competition with this time a woman demonstrating how to kiss!" |

AKS - Isme action bhi hai!
IndiaGlitz [Monday, April 23, 2007]
If you are wondering whether Himesh Reshammiya's debut film as a lead man, AAP KA SURROOR, is all about his songs, concerts and a love story then hold on as there is a lot more.
The film is not a plain simple love story but has ample dose of power packed action, as apparent in the fresh set of promos that are out. The remix version of 'Assalam Walekoom' has just been unleashed on the small screen and it is rather surprising to see the frames being filled with car chases, choppers and gun shots happening all around.
Director Prashant Chadha has ensured that each and every frame maintains a glossy look to give the film an up market look throughout, whether it is songs, dances or action.
The shooting of AKS is currently in its last schedule with the film being readied for a 29th June release. |

Adnan-Yana song debuts
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, April 23, 2007]
The wait of watching Yana Gupta in a music video is over.
After seeing her gyrating to raunchy tracks like 'Babuji' [DUM] and 'Oh What A Babe' [RAKTH], it is quite a pleasant surprise to see her emoting to an overtly romantic number 'Kisi Din' for the namesake album by Adnan Sami.
Shot in Kuala Lumpur, the song is picturised on Adnan and Yana and is a slow moving track based on melody. A love story moves along with the song and it is quite a sight to see Yana emoting with just the right conviction, as expected from a video conceived on an Adnan track. |
